Welcome to GMS Athletics
First things first…
In order to tryout for any sport here at Gayle, you need to have a valid physical on file with the coaching staff. You can get the physical online at
http://uvahealth.com/directions-locations/clinics/images-and-docs/VHSL-Sports.pdf
You can also get a physical form from the main office.
Make sure the physical is complete
All 4 pages need to be filled out (3 by the parent, and 1 by the doctor of your choice).
Many urgent care facilities in the area are doing sports physicals now for a small fee.
On the last page, all insurance information, signatures, phone numbers, and allergy information need to be filled out. Otherwise, the physical is considered “incomplete”. This is the most common mistake concerning the physicals.
Where do I turn in the physical?
Give to a Coach or a PE Teacher
Do not wait until the last minute to get your physical. If you wait too long, you will not be able to get one in time for tryouts.
If you come to tryouts and your paperwork is incomplete, you will be asked to go home and come back when your paperwork (all 4 pages of the physical form, grades, etc.) is complete.
What else do I need for tryouts?
You need to be dressed for the activity (shorts, t-shirt, sweats, and shoes).
Water Bottle, inhaler, towel, etc.
A ride at the front of the school by 5:15pm.
Attention Parents
Tryouts for all GMS Athletics are closed to the public.
Tryouts last a minimum of two days. After that time period, you are more then welcome to contact the Athletic Department or the coaching staff to talk about the tryout.

What about grades and conduct?
Grades: Nine-week rule will be in effect. In order for a student to participate in any sport, the student must meet the eligibility criteria established by the individual school and/or coach. This criteria must be approved by the principal. Transfer students from school to school in the county are eligible to play. Students must pass five subjects. An ineligible player may try out for a sport, but cannot participate in a game or meet until the next marking period.
Conduct: Please remember, as a student-athlete you are a direct representative of Gayle Middle School. The decisions and choices you make both on and off the field will reflect on your teammates, the athletic program, and the school. The ability to balance school-work and after school activities is a strong character trait and one that should be embraced.
Conduct
Scholastic sports is a privilege not a right.
If you exhibit conduct that is not conducive of excellence, you will face not only school discipline procedures, but coach discipline procedures as well.
GMS follows the SCPS Code of Conduct concerning all discipline issues.
Can coaches make it tougher?
Each coach can set the bar higher when it comes to academics.
Most coaches require you to pass all of your classes during the season, or you will be asked to get extra help after school…hurting your practice time and chances of playing during the game. You are a student FIRST.
