Spring Magic

Gabby Gonzalez

She sighed happily as her wings gently sprouted out from her

back, light chiming sounds coming out as they started to crystalize.

Spring finally arrived in the world of Celestial Spirits after what had

seemed like years of cold winter.

“Finally… Back to the place I love,” she whispered as she got

out of her little house. The sun was shining brightly and engulfed her

with the a warm, loving caress. Sweet aromas filled her as she flew a

little bit lower to touch the soft leaves on the beautiful field of flowers.

She absolutely loved spring for multiple reasons but her favorite had to

be the peaceful aura around the season. Every new season always

came as a way to improve herself and those around her. Davina smiled

as the wind blew gently across her ears; now she really, truly was

home.

Writer’s Block?

Gabby Gonzalez

I groaned at the sight of the blank page on my laptop.

I rubbed my temples in frustration, “Why can’t I write?,” I

groaned once more, letting my head gently fall on the keyboard,

random letters being typed. I looked back at the screen, seeing the

letters arranging themselves into words.

“A girl walked down the street,” it read and my eyes widened.

“What the heck?!,” I screamed, rubbing my eyes and looking at

the screen again. The words hadn’t changed. Out of nowhere, new

words started to appear, continuing the sentence.

“A girl walked down the street, the wind blowing her hair

beautifully as she entered the building…”

Eyes Are the Window to The Soul

Gabby Gonzalez

I looked at myself in the mirror, seeing the patch on my right

eye.

“Guess Sarah wasn’t the one,” I thought. You see, I lost sight

in my right eye. There is a way to regain my sight, however. The only

way is that I have to meet my soulmate, meaning that the moment me

and my soulmate meet, slowly but surely, I will regain my vision. I

sighed as I changed and walked to my dance class. Everything was

normal until I met her . I felt my heart starting to thump harder and

faster. She was the most gorgeous human being I have ever laid my

eye on. My teacher, Ms. Davis, helped her to the center. She had a

beautiful blue dress with a cute white bow in the back. She was

different from the others--shy, quiet and more reserved than most girls

I met.

“Class, we have a new student joining us today.” Ms. Davis

looked at her gently. “It’s alright miss, go on,” she said gently

encouraging her. The girl took a step forward, taking a deep breath.

“Hello, I’m Ariel. I’m blind with both eyes as you can see,” she

said timidly as I finally noticed. A small blush went to her cheeks as I

slowly walked to her.

“Hi, I’m Jack. Do you need help?,” I asked kindly, extending

my hand out towards her. She looked up at the sound of my voice and

she started to stutter.

“Please, I can’t really see,” she explained as I nodded in

response.

“Okay, I’m going to take your hand.” I explained before taking

her hand in mine. Her hand fit perfectly in mine and my heart started to

beat faster. Her blush deepened when I walked her to my spot. While

Ms. Davis gave us instructions, I was looking at her, a small smile on

my lips. I felt my heart pounding in my ribcage, making me fear that

anyone would’ve heard my heart. I was ripped from my thoughts when

Ms. Davis called my name and Ariel poked me.

“Jack? She’s calling you,” she said softly as I looked up, my

face going into a deep red.

“Y-Yes?” I responded as she sighed in frustration.

Page 11: SERENDIPITY...in my right eye. There is a way to regain my sight, however. The only way is that I have to meet my soulmate, meaning that the moment me and my soulmate meet, slowly

“Teach her the moves she needs to do,” she said as I nodded.

Class soon ended, and I walked Ariel to her things and helped her pick

them up.

“Ariel, um… I… I need to teach you the moves. So, if you’re

free today, do you want to?” I finally said, mentally cursing myself for

being this nervous. Goodness, get over yourself Jack. I saw her smile

gently at me.

“I’d like that. Thank you,” she responded politely. I then took

her to my home, which was only a few houses down. We talked during

the way; she just turned 18 and her eyesight got worse and worse over

the years. When we reached my door, I let her in first before going in

myself. I gave her a seat as I rearranged my living room for space.

“Ariel, it’s time to learn,” I said softly and simply. She stood,

gently pulling down on her dress to straighten it out.

“Okay.” She responded as I took her hands within mine. I

started to explain as I mirrored the dance moves she needed to learn.

She fumbled and almost fell a couple of times, but I caught her each

time. Ariel started to get frustrated and pulled from me, wiping the

sweat from her forehead.

“These are hard… it would be better if I could even see the

moves,” Ariel said softly enough but I heard it and my heart softly

ached.

“Well, it is your first time learning the moves. It is a little difficult

in the beginning, but don’t worry, soon you’ll get them right,” I

responded, a small but gentle smile on my face before I continued, “Do

you want to stop?”

“No, I want to keep going,” she responded before extending

her hands to mine. Hours passed by and she was slowly getting the

moves correctly. She pulled from me once more, this time smiling

proudly.

“I’m doing it!” She exclaimed happily.

My smile mirrored hers, “Think you can do it by yourself?,” I

asked.

“I can try,” she answered as I moved away enough to give her

room.

“Okay, I’m right here,” I responded as she nodded. She took a

deep breath, letting all of her muscles to relax. She then placed one

Page 12: SERENDIPITY...in my right eye. There is a way to regain my sight, however. The only way is that I have to meet my soulmate, meaning that the moment me and my soulmate meet, slowly

foot forward and started all the moves. My mouth slowly went agape;

she danced with such elegance, softly but with so much passion and

emotion. However, she tripped over her foot and started to fall. I

stepped forward in time and caught her, worry filling my eyes.

“Oh my goodness, I’m stupid,” she muttered to herself before

standing back up, “I’m so sorry.”

“No, no, no, it’s okay. You’re still learning. You’ve been doing

great,” I responded, before coming to her and taking her hands within

mine once more.

“Come on, let’s try it again,” I encouraged her, my voice getting

a little higher pitched. She shook her head, “I’m a little tired.”

“Oh, okay. Please sit down. Do you want anything to drink?,” I

asked.

“Can I have water please?,” she responded as I nodded.

“Yeah, I’ll be right back.” I responded as I went to get a glass. I

soon came back to see her trying on her own again. She danced so

gracefully and elegantly and I stood there in awe. If she can do this

now, imagine for the recital. I think she felt my presence and she

stopped, calling my name.

“Yeah, I’m here. Here you go.” I gave her the water as she

drank it.

“Thank you. I would like to do this again, are you okay with it?,”

she asked timidly.” My smile turned into a grin and I nodded.

“I’d love to.” I responded once more, and it became a regular

thing for the both of us.

A few months rolled passed us and it was the night of the

recital. I noticed Ariel was shaking slightly from her nervousness. She

turned to me, her nervousness getting the best of her.

“Jack, I can’t do it,” she cried out as I rubbed her arms gently.

“Yes, you can. We’ve been practicing it for months. There was

a small silence between us and her head turned upwards to me.

“Jack… I want to try without my blindfold,” she said timidly as

my own eyes widened.

“Not that I don’t approve, but are you sure?,” I asked as she

nodded.

“If I take mine off, will you do it with me?,” she responded, a

shy tone laced in her voice.

Page 13: SERENDIPITY...in my right eye. There is a way to regain my sight, however. The only way is that I have to meet my soulmate, meaning that the moment me and my soulmate meet, slowly

My eyes came down normally, a small smile on my face.

“Yeah,” I said simply before continuing, “Do you need help?”

She shook her head.

“I got it,” Ariel said before removing the fold slowly. Her eyes

were closed but she slowly opened them, mindful of the bright light.

She had the most beautiful golden eyes, bright and hopeful. She

blinked slowly a couple of times and I saw her face lit up, her hands

moving towards my face.

“I…I can see!” She exclaimed as I smiled along with her. I

gently took off my patch, my other blue eye slowly opening. It was a

little blurry but after blinking a few times the vision cleared up. Ariel

giggled as Ms. Davis called us in for the recital to start.

“Ready?” I asked, my smile only growing.

“Yeah. Always,” she said, this time her hand reaching for mine

before we went to our spots.

They said that eyes are windows to the soul. All you need to

do is find your missing part.

Finish Your Move

Gabby Gonzalez

“Nana, I can’t do it!” I shook my head, trembling in fear, “Can’t

you come with me?”

“I can’t help you. If someone helps, the game would

automatically stop, and you will lose. I can’t risk losing my

granddaughter, too.” Her voice softened, tears filling up her eyes. I

hugged her as she held me as tightly as she could.

“I lost your grandfather the same way. I can’t bare losing you,”

she repeated as I looked at her.

“Nano? He’s stuck in there?” My voice cracked as she nodded.

“He had gotten that chessboard only for a few dollars. You

remember how much he loved the game? Come on now, you’re losing

time.” Her voice cracked as I pulled from her, then looking up to the

attic, that same voice repeating that phase.

“Make your move.” The words repeated as I went to the attic,

as I saw a chair being pulled up to the chessboard,

“Make your move” it repeated again. I sat down on the chair,

taking a deep breath before taking the pawn next to the one I moved

first, moving it to the same position as the first one. The game went on,

each piece of the chessboard from my side being taken away. Every

time that happened, I felt a small part of me disappearing into the

chessboard. Time went on and it ended up with a king alone on Nano’s

side and a queen and a king on mine. I felt my eyelids getting heavy,

the clock ticking and it was my move.

“Finish your move” the voice said, and I merely grunted in

response. I felt so tired, my body slumping as I barely held it together.

“Maybe I should just quit. I’m so tired… I can barely keep my

body up,” I thought. I heard a small but strong voice, Nana’s voice:

“You better not quit.” A hardened look appeared in her eyes.

“Nana… I’m tired… so… tired…” I repeated.

“Your mom never gave up on you, even at the very end. She

was always so proud of you, calling you one of the miracles of. Think

about her now; do you think she’d be proud of you now?!” She

Page 24: SERENDIPITY...in my right eye. There is a way to regain my sight, however. The only way is that I have to meet my soulmate, meaning that the moment me and my soulmate meet, slowly

persisted, and my eyes shot open. Nana barely ever talked about my

mother and I grunted once more, pulling my body up.

“No… she wouldn’t be.” I said as I grabbed the queen. The

voice repeated one more time.

“Finish. Your. Move.”

I Don’t Know…

Anthony Guerra

One may think that all is well,

Clearly bounded by a spell.

Try to run, try to leave,

Doubtless; you are quite naïve.

It is love, is it not,

The thing that makes you so distraught?

Find your comfort, find your peace,

And slowly let your worries cease.

Stop and think; you know way,

So muster up your strength and say,

“Hold on darling, wait for me,

Down the shore and by the sea.”

Musical Adventures

Gabby Gonzalez

“Another day, another day of work ,” Ellie thought to

herself as she placed her headphones on before starting her

school work. Just like clockwork, each day she listened to the

songs on her device leisurely, finishing her work. The songs were

her favorite and she knew the tiles as soon as the beat began.

Ellie lay on her bed, her eyes closed so she could hear the voices

of each singer more clearly. She let her mind wander off to the

change of pace and vocal tone of each singer; some days she

imagined herself as a singer in a lounge, some days she saw

herself as a pop singer in a sold-out stadium. No matter what type

of music she listened to, old or new, the music always brought

her on another adventure.

My Last Flight

Gabby Gonzalez

I couldn’t help but feel my stomach turn as I saw Earth getting

smaller and smaller. I was on the second plane, heading to another

planet since we are the most destructive animals on Earth. I soon felt a

hand reaching, holding onto mine. Turning my head, I saw my sister

giving me a small hopeful smile.

“Don’t worry little sis, everything’ll be okay.” She said, her

thumb gently rubbing small circles on the skin. I mirrored her smile,

looking down as my hair covered the scared tear running down. She

noticed it and wiped it away, pulling my face to meet hers.

“I promise; you just gotta be strong,” she responded, and I

nodded.

“I know…” I said softly as I looked at the window, my eyes

widening to a beautiful sight. A gorgeous sunset, the sun painting the

sky from a light pink to a red orange, clouds gently covering the middle

of the sun, making it look like the sun was cut in half. The captain of

the flight said one last time on the loudspeaker.

Believe

Fatima Hijazi

In order to stand up for what you believe in, you must believe

in said thing strongly and possess a significant amount of

courage. If you don’t believe in your abilities, stand by your

viewpoint, or have the confidence to speak up for yourself;

otherwise, you’ll never be able to attain the success in life

you wish to have. Your worst enemy is yourself, and when

you continuously second-guess or doubt yourself and your

abilities life will never reward you in the way you wish it will.

You get what you put into the world, so believe in yourself

and stand up when you need to.

“I just don’t know what to do Sara,” Danny said, his

head hanging low, his hands never leaving her side.

“It’s okay, Danny. Sometimes when life happens, you

don’t need to figure everything out at a moment’s notice. You

need time and that’s okay. You’ll rise up once more; you

always do,” Sara responded, her hands gently laying on his

neck, her lips gently touching his head before embracing him

in hug. It was true what she said, you don’t really need to

figure everything out at a moment’s notice. Everything good

will come, it just takes time to happen.

I Will Always Be With You

By Gabby Gonzalez

Zuriel wiped the tears that fell when his mom placed the

necklace from his deceased great grandmother around his neck. It was

a simple gesture yet still beautiful for a number of reasons: for its

simplicity, for its beauty, for the deeper significance that was carried

within both the charm and the beads themselves. The beads were

various shades of light green and the charm, a whale which was her

favorite sea creature, a dark navy blue with the fins extended as if they

were wings instead. Each bead was added each year she stayed with

her family, with different colors added for each year.

“Remember what she told you Zuriel, ‘Quam bene vivas refert

non quam diu,’” his mom told him, pulling him into an embrace.

“It is how well you live that matters, not how long.” She

translated as a small smile reached Zuriel’s lips. He pulled from her

warm embrace, looking at her eyes which comforted him in an odd

way.

“Thanks mom. I… I need to get some air,” Zuriel said before

running off to a nearby field. Phantom, his pet wolf, followed along.

Ever since he was a child Phantom always was with him, like his own

guardian angel. The sky was beautiful and tranquil, different colors of

orange, black, purple, and pink painted the sky. He fell on the grass as

Phantom nuzzled his head in between the space of his arm and body.

Zuriel smiled softly at the action, running his hand gently through

Phantom’s fur.

“Hey Phan,” he whispered softly. Phantom softly whimpered,

his nose gently nudging Zuriel’s cheek.

“I know Phan, I miss her, too,” he responded as then Phantom

looked up and softly howled. Zuriel raised his eyebrow in confusion,

why was Phantom howling? He looked up and his eyes widened. It

was the same whale from his charm. A soft breeze passed through

him, as if his grandmother was there saying the words, “Don’t be

scared my child, I will always be with you.”

The Basement

Justin Lee

I park through the driveway and make my way into my house; it is

dark. I call out to Danny, “Danny? Where are you? Sophie? Sophie?”

Instead of a response, I feel a cold chill run up my spine, I turn on

the lights and place my bag on the couch.

“Where in the world is the babysitter? Did she just leave Danny

alone?” I wonder to myself

I shake my head and let out an exhausted sigh, I knew I shouldn’t

have trusted that new babysitter. I make my way up the stairs to find

that the second floor is dark as well

“Son?”

No response, did the two go out? Where are they?

I turn on the lights and find all the doors closed, I open each door,

only to find the rooms completely dark and empty. I was getting

frustrated.

Where are they?

I go back down the stairs and here a soft cry coming from the

basement.

“D-dad is that you?”

I quickly make my way down the stairs and open the door to the

basement. Unlike the other rooms in the house, the lights in this room

were turned on.

“Danny are you down there?” “Y-yeah… “

There is a slight hesitation in his voice; I make my way down the

stairs and see him crouched up on the couch crying. I quickly make my

way next to him.

“Danny what’s wrong? Where’s Sophie?”

He looks up and rubs his eyes, “S-Sophie got eaten by monsters.“

“Monsters?” I let out a chuckle, “Danny, you’re ten; you know there

are no such things as monsters.”

He grabs my arms, “N-no they were here! They were tall, pale

white, and s-skinny, bony! S-Sophie was doing the laundry when the

monsters came out! Th-there were three and they took their time eating

her!” `

Page 51: SERENDIPITY...in my right eye. There is a way to regain my sight, however. The only way is that I have to meet my soulmate, meaning that the moment me and my soulmate meet, slowly

“Alright Danny, enough silly talk, tell me what really happened to

Sophie.“ “N-no!” His voice turns serious. “I was there too! Right when the

monsters were about to go away, I closed the door too loudly and they

turned back and c-caught me!”

Danny starts crying once more, “Right before they were going to eat

me, I-I made a d-deal!” “A deal? What deal?”

He slowly turns his head away, “I-I said if you let me live, I’ll give

you my dad… “ I start to laugh, “Alright Danny, that was a good one! You’re getting

very creative with your story-telling! But you should keep things that

are more realistic , I mean, if there were monsters down here in the

basement, where are they now?” He points behind me, “In the closet behind you.” That’s when I hear the doors of the closet slowly creak open…

Maika Kolia

Gabby Gonzalez

Maika woke up from her peaceful slumber, stretching before

she stood up. ‘6 a.m.’ the clock read as she started to get dressed; it

was her first day at her dream school of magic, Amoferth, Academy of

Magic. Ever since she was a little girl, Maika had always wanted to

become a wizard with all those legendary battles just like Harry Potter.

Her mom actually fully supported her, even though she didn’t have the

ability to have magic like Maika. In this world, magical children were

usually frowned upon; although segregation against magic has been

outlawed for years now. She ran downstairs, going to the kitchen to

see her mom just waking up to make coffee. She rubbed her eyes and

yawned before Maika smiled at her.

“Morning mom,” Maika said before walking down fully to greet

her mother.

“Morning sweetheart. You start at 8, right?” Her mom asked as

Maika nodded.

“Okay, then sit. I’ll make some food,” her mom responded as

Maika followed her, checking her bags if she she was going to leave

then.

“Okay… Magic wand… Textbooks…” Maika started to list as

her mom placed food on the table.

“Sweetheart, you can check that later. Come on and eat. You’ll

need it for this big day,” her mom gently spoke as she took a sip of her

coffee.

“Yeah mom,” Maika responded before placing her things down

and began to eat.

Page 58: SERENDIPITY...in my right eye. There is a way to regain my sight, however. The only way is that I have to meet my soulmate, meaning that the moment me and my soulmate meet, slowly

“Did dad wake up yet?” Maika asked her, taking a sip of her

water.

“Not yet sweetie, you know dad sleeps in on his days off,”

mom responded.

“Oh, right,” Maika said before taking another huge bite.

“Sweetheart, calm down, Amoferth isn’t going to disappear.”

“I know but I’m so excited and I need to see all my classes

mom,” Maika, her legs bouncing from her chair from excitement. Her

mother came around and gently rubbed her head, a soft smile on her

face.

“I know,” she said softly, kissing her head gently, “I love you.”

“I love you, too, mom,” Maika said before her mom sent her

back upstairs to get her things and change. Maika’s mom worked two

jobs to pay for her daughter’s classes, and she wanted to be there for

her enrollment. For upcoming freshmen, there was a mandatory

meeting and parents, no matter if they were descended from magic or

not, could come if they wished to. Maika’s mom was just done getting

ready when she heard Maika call her name. She came to see her

wearing her uniform, a beautiful elegant burgundy red shirt with a cute

white bow and a black skirt with white stockings; the school emblem

was on her right chest. A huge smile was on face as Maika’s mom

smiled to her, taking out her phone.

“My little girl is growing up. Let me take a picture,” Maika’s

mother said as she got her camera out.

“Mom…” Maika whined as her mom took pictures.

Page 59: SERENDIPITY...in my right eye. There is a way to regain my sight, however. The only way is that I have to meet my soulmate, meaning that the moment me and my soulmate meet, slowly

“Okay, okay, I got a few now. Let’s go,” Maika nodded as her

parents drove her to the train, parking the car before reaching the spot.

“Okay, I practiced this before. Hold my hand,” Maika told her

mom as she took her hand, her heart beating fast. Maika got out her

wand and closed her eyes.

“Porta, portae, Aperta ad locum nominis Amoferth frui. Ite, ite,

Et hoc modo cantat,” Maika chanted as the wind started to pick up

quickly, circling around them as they disappeared. The world started to

change around them, different colors and shapes formed around

them--blues, pinks, purples, whites, every color under the rainbow.

They soon felt the ground as their surroundings changed, a gate now

before them. There were two windows right next to it, a sign that one

read, “Incoming Freshman/Transfer” and “Continuing Students.” They

walked to the ‘Incoming Freshman” window and there was an older

lady, a sweet smile on her lips.

“Welcome to Amoferth, Academy of Magic, I am Cerena.”

Blind

My life boils down to the present, to the moment; my name is shot

through a pleasant, plain house. I appreciated what was next, and the corners

of my mouth turned up, my legs unfolded, my feet landing on the cold tile

floor. The little furniture she’s kept over the years hugs the wall making the

rooms seem open. I reach her standing with a cane in hand and hat on her

head. Her chin turned upward; the folds around her eyes don’t take away

from her character.

“The usual?”

My question is followed by her hand blindly reaching for mine. Her

cane taps the sidewalk as our steady beat for our trip.

“What do you see currently?” Our beat stops and I do, too. The

tension in my body releases as my eyes scan our surroundings. The infinite

moments I’ve described for her, sometimes my words twist and my

expression goes sour when I think I’ve gotten it wrong. A sigh escapes me

and I turn her body to face the rising sun.

“The blue in the sky is masked by the honey orange glow from the

sun. The skyscrapers still haven’t reached beyond the sky, the lake is quiet

today. Oh, the bunch of purple flowers I told you about, there are a few bees

flying through them. They fly after one another forming a wave. Each day I

feel as though the colors in nature become more saturated, the trees seem as

though they’re breathing as we do. The leaves causing that quiet rustling

must really relax you. And before you say anything, there’s another person

sitting by the lake, I didn’t notice. Did you sense their presence? Probably.

They might also be taking in the morning as we are, except they allow their

eyes to be shut with a gentle smile.”

The Boy and the Wolf

Diana Chitic

A young soul wandered among the trees when he encountered

the creature. It had a coat of what resembled white fluff. It had pointed

ears on top of its head, piercing yellow eyes, a long nose, and walked

on four legs. The young soul approached it with careful steps. The

creature was glowing under the light of the moon, appearing almost

porcelain, as it rested on a bed of grass. Having heard footsteps, the

creature looked up and pierced through the young soul with its eyes.

The young soul carefully came to where the creature had been laying.

With a huff, the creature began to speak, “Why have you come

young boy?” Shocked that such a creature could have uttered a word,

the young boy stumbled back mildly frightened.

“You speak,” the boy said shakily. The creature grunted and

brought his head back down to nuzzle between the crunched flowers.

“What are you?,” asked the young boy. The creature, now agitated,

stood and then began to walk away.

“I am a Wolf,” the creature responded. The young boy

followed, disregarding the obvious annoyance the Wolf was feeling.

With innocence and curiosity, the young boy wondered why the Wolf

was not with the other animals.

“Why are you not with the rest of us?”

The young boy had always seen the Wolf be lonesome

between the dark trees. Although fearful of the creature, he always felt

bad. After a moment, the Wolf stopped in its tracks and faced the boy,

“It is because your creator deems me not his own.” The young boy was

confused. His creator always taught him that everything on this world

was his.

Page 72: SERENDIPITY...in my right eye. There is a way to regain my sight, however. The only way is that I have to meet my soulmate, meaning that the moment me and my soulmate meet, slowly

“Why are you not his?” It was silent for a minute. The Wolf let

out a tiny whine but immediately replaced it with a loud snarl. “Because

he did not create me!” The Wolf trotted away in a fast pace but the

young boy followed with determination. “Wait! How are you not one of

his? We are all here because of him!”

The Wolf stopped and turned its body to face the young boy.

Looking almost human with tears in its yellow eyes, “It is what I said.

Your creator did not create me. I stand forth in this world with no

identity. He deems me an evil creature who emerged from the

darkness!” The wolf cried in agony. The young boy hurt to hear what

the Wolf was telling him. In denial, the boy told the creature he was

mistaken. The Wolf shook its head and muffled its cries. “I may not be

of his creation but I saw him as someone who could take me in, make

me one of his own. But it is not always simple.”

The young boy protested and tried to convince the Wolf to

come with him. The Wolf denied his offering. “You will be going to the

stars soon. That is where they all go. Dancing among the starlights

with vast colors. I am not welcome there.” The young boy crying, shook

his head at the unfairness of it all. Still crying, he started fading out and

the twinkles of his soul ascended into the moonlight. The Wolf cried at

being left alone again. This had not been the first time. The creature’s

heart could not handle any more pain.

The Wolf let out one last howl at the moon.

Midnight

Nicole McDermott

I lay awake, my eyes resting open, my body sprawled across the bed.

The street lights outside my room sneak through the thin tattered

curtains, splashing my walls with still shadows. A sigh escapes my lips

as I breathe in and out deeply, taking in the smell of freshly washed

sheets. I turn my head to glance at the clock, the numbers blinking:

12:00 A. M.

The quietness almost lulls my eyes into closing. It’s broken by a sharp

crack by my window. I twirl my body around, planting my feet on the

cool wood; the ground feels unwelcoming at this hour.

The planks creak under my weight, the noise startling me with each

step I take. I face the window now, seeing nothing but a thick fog rolling

in. My window opens; hesitantly I lean out looking into the distance, but

I see nothing but the misleading darkness. A glow forms on the horizon

and splits to scatter into the rest of the starless night sky. The lights

become brighter and seem closer to me. A single light beelines for me

in my haven from the night. A firefly. The rest of the hoard spills into my

room, illuminating every dark corner and crevasse. I suddenly feel a

weariness come over me; I crawl back to my bed, a blanket of fireflies

encasing me. My eyes flutter shut as I drift off to sleep finally.

Interlude

Astral Charm: The Black Knight Justin Lee

Do I know anything about the Black Knight? An interestin’ topic, the

knight clad in armor cloaked with shadows… Aye, no one knows much about

him, even I, Selminar the all-knowing, don’t know much. But out of the

baboons you see around here, I say I would be the most knowledgeable on

this topic… Want more?

Aye, cheers to you laddie, come, pull up a seat near the hearth, the

story of the Black Knight is a story that you won’t want to miss…

The Black Knight… errr, I”m assuming that you’re asking about the one in the

Adventurer’s Guild, yes? Alright, well you see, first things first, the Black

Knight is what everyone calls him. It ain’t his real name. He resembles the

Black Knight we all know in legends. That bein’ said, I guess it’s safe to say

we don’t really know his true name… Aye, not even the guild itself knows his

name! Buwahaha!

He suddenly appeared in the guild not too long ago, three years

max? I… I remember his arrival; yes, it was indeed quite the sight to behold.

A black lizard-demi, clad in black dragon armor walked through those very

doors with his lustrous, obsidian colored sword strapped around his back.

Since the day he joined the guild, he managed to climb the ranks

with ease. Starting from the bottom, he is now one of the highest ranked

adventurers in the guild. A gold ranked adventurer, two ranks away from a

master rank.

Aye, gold ranked, these ain’t your ordinary adventurers. You see,

the rank above: diamond? Aye, that rank is reserved only for legends

themselves. As for the Master Rank, well, let’s just say adventurers that

belong in those ranks are people such as the original Black Knight, people

beyond legends. Gold is basically the top here laddie, you’ll see nothing

above that nowadays. Why’s that? Well, you see, gold ranked adventurers

are, well, good. They strive for challenging quests, fame, riches, and

sometimes, just adventure for fun. Aye, that’s good and all but not all things

end up with a happy ending. Let’s just say, some of them don’t end up

coming back after some these quests.

How many gold adventurers are there including the Black Knight?

Aye, if memory serves right, there used to be five but now there’s only three.

Mmmm, little amount, ain’t it? Just goes to show how hard it is for people to

climb the ranks and also shows, well, how dangerous it is as well.

Page 88: SERENDIPITY...in my right eye. There is a way to regain my sight, however. The only way is that I have to meet my soulmate, meaning that the moment me and my soulmate meet, slowly

Back on track…the Black Knight, he’s not much of a talker. He

comes in, goes on quests, and leaves. He comes in like a shadow and leaves

just as swiftly; I mean, it’s not hard to miss a knight in black walk in a guild for

cryin; out loud! Aye, but it is, it’s as if he’s a ghost or somethin’, but what kind

of ghost would join a guild and go on quests?! Buwahaha!

But something that intrigues many is his overall physical

appearance. You see, he’s quite… small and slim… somethin’ that you don’t

see much of from a knight! That being said, there are quite a lot of rumors

surrounding the Black Knight. One such rumor is that he might be a

dragon-demi instead of a lizard-demi, crazy ain’t it? From what I know,

dragon-demis have wings, horns, a tail, and have the bloody ability to breathe

fire! I don’t see no wings nor horns on him! Aye, crazy people, am I right? Oh

oh and hear this one, some say that because of his size and overall

appearance, some think that he might be a maiden! What’s wrong with that?

What do you mean what’s wrong with that? Yes, I know there are female

adventurers but… err, you do have a point, I guess there certainly is a chance

for him to be a girl, aye, assumed too much on the gender role here, sorry

laddie.

Mmmm, I heard that he- well, alright for now let's call the Black

Knight a ‘he’ for now! I heard he currently hired a Gatherer. What is a

Gatherer you say? Well, it’s exactly what the name depicts; these guys are

kind of like … apprentices? Helper? Something like a combination of the

two… These guys go along with the adventurer in their adventures and help

them gather information, learn from the adventurers themselves, help gather

rewards, and sometimes even assist the adventurer in battle from time to

time. Aye, it’s quite a useful ‘thing’ an adventurer can have in possession of;

of course, the Gatherer gets paid for his or her work on assisting the

adventurer… But you don’t really see too many Gatherers around, I mean,

what’s the point of going on adventures to help an adventurer if you can just

become an adventurer yourself?

But the Gatherer he hired? Hmmm, nothing special really, wears

pretty cheap armor and wears a mask to conceal his identity… just your

average Gatherer. His name? Mmm, can’t remember, never really looked into

it, but his name started with the letter “E”? Maybe it was a “C”....

Oh speak of the devil, the Black Knight and his little underling are

here- Oh dear, what happened? His armor is all- wait, he? He’s a she?!

Winterfall

Gabby Gonzalez

Salas, the little elf, sighed when he reached Winterfall, a utopia

where the sky meets the sea. It was absolutely beautiful: the sea reflecting

the clear, sky blue sky. There was a cool, gentle breeze that flowed through

his hair. Today Salas, was going to choose his star to keep and take care of.

You see, each star has a planet, a place where any celestial creature can

come and take care of it. There were stars of all different types of sizes and

shapes. Salas walked around the field and nothing really caught his attention.

After an hour, he was about to give up, but he finally found a worthy star. He

picked it up, a small caring smile on his lips. It was rather small but it had a

beautiful blue and green color scheme. He held it close to his heart.

“Don’t worry my little Earth, I’ll protect you.”

Where Can They Go? Nicole McDermott Love is a strange concept. I witnessed love when a turtle bobbed on the surface of a lake near a branch stationed robin. Each day I returned to that lake to watch the same occurrence; the bird landing occasionally dipping its head down to look at the surface. Then the turtle swimming it's shelled body over to the shore to the bird. Was it just habit that they came together or did they love one another? I brought my knees to my chest sitting on the rock infested sand by the lake, across from the lovers. A black cat slipped through the bushes behind me and came to be seated next to me as if they were a movie and we were the audience. It’s yellow eyes fixed on them. The next day the robin didn’t come and neither did the cat, but the turtle was still at the shore waiting.
