L.I. To understand more about addiction and passive smoking

Nicotine is a clear, naturally occurring liquid which is found in several different types of plant.

Tobacco has the highest concentration.

What is the most dangerous thing about nicotine?

Nicotine

The most dangerous thing about nicotine is how addictive it is

In its pure form, nicotine doesn’t have many adverse effects on the body. The really dangerous thing is all the other chemicals you breathe in because of a smoker’s addiction!

Can you name some of these chemicals?

Nicotine

Nicotine is generally recognised to be one of the most addictive of all drugs.

Users can quickly become dependent on its effects. It can take just a couple of cigarettes for the brain to become addicted.

If someone suddenly stops taking nicotine, they usually experience prolonged withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety and mood swings. As a result the habit is hard to break.

Nicotine

Page 14: * Imagine that everyone in this room is a smoker. * Half go to one side * Half go to the other * What do you think this represents?

The nicotine reaches the brain within 7 seconds

It is one of the fastest acting of any drug!

Once it reaches the brain, the brain releases endorphins and dopamine

Page 15: * Imagine that everyone in this room is a smoker. * Half go to one side * Half go to the other * What do you think this represents?

This all happens in 7 seconds!

Your brain stops being able to naturally produce dopamine and endorphins, become dependent on nicotine to do this for it.

Increased activity occurs here

NRT – Nicotine Replacement Therapy.

Helps to gradually wean a smoker off nicotine

*Passive Smoking

*Being ADDICTED means that smokers end up harming themselves.

*It also means that many smokers put others at dangers by smoking around them

*This is called PASSIVE SMOKING – also known as Second Hand Smoke or Environmental Tobacco Smoke

Page 18: * Imagine that everyone in this room is a smoker. * Half go to one side * Half go to the other * What do you think this represents?

*A smoker only inhales 15% of the smoke from a cigarette. 85% of the smoke from the cigarette ends up in the air

*Passive smoking has an impact on everyone who is exposed to tobacco smoke – young & old, people & animals, smokers & non-smokers

Page 19: * Imagine that everyone in this room is a smoker. * Half go to one side * Half go to the other * What do you think this represents?

*Passive Smoking

*Pick out one card at a time

*Decide whether you think this is a short term or a long term risk of passive smoking

*Place where on the body it would affect

*Short term = something that happens at the time, or shortly afterwards

*Long term = something that can happen years after being exposed to passive smoke

Page 20: * Imagine that everyone in this room is a smoker. * Half go to one side * Half go to the other * What do you think this represents?

*Passive Smoking

*Which parts of the body seem most likely to be affected by passive smoking?

*Were there any diseases you were particularly surprised by?

*Why does being in a smoky environment lead to non-smokers getting diseases that you normally associate with smokers?

*Discussion

*Discuss each question in your group

*When I raise my hand you must be silent within 3 seconds

* We will then discuss each answer

*Addiction

*“It is said that the individual must be free to choose (whether he wishes to smoke).  But he is not free; with a drug of addiction the option is open only at the beginning”

E-cigarettes

Keep HIGH levels of nicotine in the body so keep smokers addicted to nicotine.

Were designed to allow smokers to ‘smoke’ inside, NOT to help them quit

E-cigarettes DO NOT help smokers to quit smoking!

Alternative to regular smoking, but not a way to stop nicotine addiction
