London’s River Valley Grasslands
HISTORY
Clapton is overflowing with green space – Hunts Wharf is surrounded by a variety of verdant parks, marshes and canals. Millfields Park is a stone’s throw away, and with its lovely children’s play area, cricket pitch and stunning mature elmavenues, it’s no surprise this is a local favourite. The Lea River Navigation is quite literally on your doorstep with Springfield Park, full of beautiful conservation areas, only a two minute walk away and Hackney Marshes also in close proximity – one of the largest areas of common land in Greater London, with over 80 grass football, rugby and cricket pitches. Walthamstow Wetlands, Europe’s largest urban wetland, is a 211 hectare nature reserve located in the heart of London’s Lee Valley, just 15 minutes from central London. The area remains a Thames Water operational site with the 10 reservoirs supplying 3.5 million people with water, however it has now been regenerated and opened to the wider public for the first time in 150 years. Walthamstow Marsh Nature Reserve, Coppermill Fields and Leyton Marsh are all part of this Green Flag award-winning site in the Lea Bridge area. The reserve is one of the few remaining pieces of London’s once widespread river valley grasslands, and a space to treasure for many reasons!

You’re never far away from something to see or do in Clapton and Hunts Wharf. Set along the River Lee navigation, next to the protected grasslands yet only 17 minutes from Liverpool Street.

The London Borough of Hackney, in which Clapton is located, has always been a place of industry. From the water-powered mills along the River Lea in 1381 to the inventors of the 18th century, the borough has been at the forefront of innovation. During the second half of the 19th century, Hackney’s population grew rapidly, and created the urban landscape we see today. Today, factories have been taken over by artists and creative revolutionaries. Art is the new industry and Hackney Borough and Clapton are home to more innovators than anywhere else in Europe – from the digital businesses that form Tech City to the fine artists breathing life into industrial sites in Shoreditch and Hackney Wick.

Venturing slightly further from Hunts Wharf is the stunning Hackney Downs, and the epic Victoria Park, with ponds, a pavilion, tennis courts and a sports ground – the perfect place for the dance festivals that are held during the summer. The beautiful Springfield Park is nearby Hunts Wharf, and is one of Hackney’s best loved parks. The park holds a Green Flag award. Green Flags are given to the best green spaces in the country and are awarded each year to make sure the quality of the green space remains high. Springfield Park

In Clapton, it is hard to move without stumbling upon a unique boutique. Nearby Chatsworth Road has a Sunday street market, vintage clothes shops, a fancy hairdresser and the world’s smartest-looking Spar. Lower Clapton Road has a crafty knitting shop, a chic bookshop, a premium denim store and, of course, a craft-beer supplier. There is also Hackney Heart Market, which operates Monday to Saturday at St. John’s Church, Hackney Central. Great to grab some of the wares offered by the homegrown talent, especially on Saturday, when street food traders serve up aselection of barbecue meats, cakes, pizza and more. For designer wear at an affordable price, there are a multitude of outlets in the area from the likes of Burberry, Aquascutum, Pringle and Bally, while Westfield in Stratford is a 17 minutedrive away, and offers the best in high street shops and designer fashion.

You’re never far away from something to see or do in Clapton and Hunts Wharf. Rio Cinema in nearby Stoke Newington and Hackney Picture House are excellent for Indie and mainstream films, and Hackney Empire on Mare Street offers an eclectic mix of theatre, comedy, music, art and dance. Art permeates throughout the borough, galleries abound, as do pop-up installations, so there is always something new and exciting to see. If that wasn’t enough, Central London, the Southbank, and the theatre district of the West End are also all a short journey away.

The area provides the best in East End boozers although in slightly revamped form. The Crooked Billet, moments from Hunts Wharf, is a handsome pub with a huge rear garden, acres of decking and deck chairs – an ideal place to relax. TheMermaid is another great local, with local craft beers, and a delicious selection of Saturday brunch dishes and Sunday roasts. The lively Hackney Wick is a short ten minute cycle away, featuring a selection of craft breweries sitting alongside the canal. Twelve minutes walk away is Clapton Hart, with a leafy garden and lots of real British ales.

It’s easy to get fit in Clapton, too. The beautiful parks and canal paths offer ample opportunity for joggers and cyclists alike. Clissold Leisure Centre and King’s Hall Leisure Centre, both a short walk away, offer a range of facilities, including a gym, swimming pool and netball. Of course, for world-class sporting facilities, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is nearby. Here you can swim in the wake of champions at the London Aquatics Centre, try out your cycling at the Lee Valley Velo Park, work out in the stateof-the-art gym in the Copper Box Arena, or enjoy a game of tennis at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. Lee Valley is also home to a British HorseSociety-approved riding centre which caters for everyone, from complete beginners to advanced tuition in competition disciplines.

Most Clapton parents are happy to send their children to the local state schools and most are within a short journey of Hunts Wharf. Four of the nearest – The Olive, Jubilee, William Patten and Clapton Girls’ Academy – are all rated “outstanding” by Ofsted, with all the other schools in the area rated “good”. Rushmore in ElderfieldRoad and Millfields in Hilsea Street are some of the most popular. For higher education, the great transports connections from Clapton Station make many of London’s top universities a simple bike or trainride away from Hunts Wharf.
