Impressive buildings from the 14th to 16th century are interspersed with new buildings from the 1960's and 1970's. A little later, at the beginning of the eighties, 130 spherelights in the unmistakable design of the time were installed in the city centre by the company Rademacher. These round globes with a dark brown »equatorial« surrounding are attached to a lamppost of the same colour in groups of three or five. As part of the transformation of the city center these street lights will be dismantled by the year 2015 and replaced with energy-saving models. Rather than scrapping the lights, Marko Lulic (*1972, Vienna) took this opportunity and recycled 34 of these lights for a light installation. With his walk-in »Clearing« at the Mevlana-Platz he commemorates these city furnishings as part of Schüttorf's recent history. The large light sculpture has an area of about 50 square meters and consists of a paved base, on which the »Rademacher spherelights« are built. The base level can also be used as seating. The »Clearing« becomes an attraction, when on selected days it is lit up for a few hours. These times are co-determined by the inhabitants of Schüttorf in order to give special occasions in their city a festive setting.
