Why did people support Chartism in the mid 19th Century?

People supported the Chartists for a variety of different reasons. The points below outline some of these reasons:

1. In 1832, the Great Reform Act was passed, which gave more people the right to vote. However, the working classes were still largely excluded from voting.

2. Many people supported the Chartists and wanted the vote extended to people over 21.

3. Chartists wanted an end to property qualification for parliament, which meant Members of Parliament (MPs) had to be from wealthy backgrounds.

4. Many argued that MPs should be paid to allow people from all classes to stand as MPs.

5. The Chartist movement began in 1836 in the middle of an economic recession.

6. In 1842, an industrial depression struck the North of England and mill owners had to reduce their work force.

Why did people support Chartism in the mid 19th Century?

Using the previous screens and working in groups of three, imagine one of you is a newspaper reporter.

You are going to interview two supporters of the Chartist movement in 1842.

One of the interviewees will support Chartism because he wants more political power for the working classes. The other interviewee supports the Chartists because he wants better working conditions and job opportunities for the working classes.

Your questions and answers will need to ensure the content on the previous screens are covered.

You may wish to include material from other sources as well.

Now perform your role play in front of the class!
