This saying is about the intensity with which we must live our life. Abba (Father) Lot, approached an older monk, Abba Joseph, for advice. He was doing his best. (In fact, he was doing much more than most people.) But something seemed to be missing. What more could he do? The old man did not answer his question directly. He did not say “Double your fasting” or “Pray longer”. Instead, he showed him something marvellous. His outstretched fingers became flames, bright and fiery. If you will, if you really want it, you can become all flame. We are reminded of the rich young man (Matt 19: 16-26) who asked Jesus, “What good deed must I do to have eternal life?” Just like Abba Lot, the rich young man was obedient to God, but he felt there must be more. Jesus’ answer: “If you wish to be complete, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” That was the answer for a man who loved his wealth. But Abba Lot had already given up everything to follow Jesus. What was missing for him? Abba Joseph does not say exactly. Perhaps Abba Lot had fallen into a comfortable routine. Perhaps he was relying on his own powers and not on God. For whatever reason, he needed to change; he needed to live his life more intensely, to draw closer to God. For someone else, what Abba Lot had already done might be enough. For Abba Lot, more was required. For each of us, something more is always required. The spiritual struggle must always be intense. And what of Abba Joseph’s fingers? Do they not remind us of Jesus, on Mount Tabor with three disciples, becoming “brighter than the sun”? Yes.     T he Sayings of the Desert Fathers (Γεροντικόν) is one of the most ancient historical records of how Christian men and women struggled to live their faith. This saying is about the intensity with which we must live our life. Abba (Father) Lot, approached an older monk, Abba Joseph, for advice. He was doing his best. (In fact, he was doing much more than most people.) But something seemed to be missing. What more could he do? The old man did not answer his question directly.     S t Sophia, with her three daughters, Faith, Hope and Love, lived in Italy in the second century during the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian. Growing up in a wealthy and devout family, Sophia nurtured her children in boldness of faith, unfailing hope and unconditional love. Word of their righteous living reached Hadrian who sent soldiers to bring them before him, so that they may sacrifice to the goddess Artemis. He was astounded by the steadfastness of faith shown by the children. Thinking it was by their resolute support for each another that they were able to resist his will, he cunningly put them to the test individually. Faith, who was 12 years old, was brought before the Emperor. She dismissed the Emperor’s charm as foolishness. The enraged Emperor had her mercilessly beaten. However the tortures were in vain, for she was under the Providence of God. When they came to behead her, Sophia encouraged her to accept with joyfulness the death that would unite her with her beloved Christ. Hope, who was 10 years old, followed. Confessing Christ as steadfastly as her sister, she was beaten and cast into a raging furnace, but its fire went out upon touching her, for the love of God in her heart burnt with a mightier flame than this material fire. She too eventually died by the sword, glorifying God. Love was then summoned before the maddened Emperor. She was only 9 years old but of the same resolute mind as her sisters. She was thrown into a furnace, from which she was delivered by an angel and finally beheaded. Sophia, forced to look upon the extreme suffering of her daughters, was overwhelmed by earthly sorrow and gave her soul to God a few days later at their tomb. Even though she did not suffer for Christ in the flesh, she was not deprived of a martyr's crown.

    28. THE PHYSICAL AND MORAL RESTORA-TION OF MAN AND CREATION

    T he exclusive task of the Incarnation of the Son of God, was the reforming and recreation of man and secondly the restoration and renewal of the physical world. 1. The Recreation of man.

    The first Adam was simply a human being. Jesus Christ, as God-man, was an entirely “new creation” of God, “the second Adam”. He was a “new Man”, a new Adam. As a result He was the originator of the recreation of the human race.

    2. The fall of original man (Adam & Eve), led to his separation from God, and as a result he lost the Divine Grace, he had until then. He remained alone, disabled and an invalid in the world, without the help and Grace of the Holy Spirit.

    3. The Incarnation of Christ, gave human nature once again what was missing from it, “the other half”, the divine dimension. Jesus described Himself as the Groom, who came to take back the Bride (the human nature), who until then was alone and destitute.

    4. For the recreation of man, Jesus grafted the wild and fallen human nature into His own self. As a result the nutritious juices of the divine nature of Jesus, began to revitalise, feed and reform the human nature. The result of this was that man began to take on once again godly features and an image resembling that of God.

    5. The Incarnation revealed the picture, the model (the archetype) of man – the God-man, Jesus Christ. The Incarnation functioned as the womb, inside which human nature was treated by the fire of the divine nature of Christ, and took on once again its first form, its “ancient beauty”. In that sense Christ acted as Goldsmith, - He placed the fallen human nature inside the crucible of His divine nature, and cleansed it of all the negative features that had entered into it as a result of the Fall.

    Η καρδιά μας είναι πλημμυρισμένη από συγκίνηση στην μνήμη της κυρίας Ιουλίττας Αντωνιάδη. Για όσους δεν γνωρίζουν, η κυρία Ιουλίττα Αντωνιάδη ήταν φιλόλογος καθηγήτρια, σύζυγος του καθηγητή της Ιατρικής Μιχαήλ Αντωνιάδη, προέδρου της Χριστιανικής Ενώσεως για πενήντα και περισσότερα χρόνια. Η κυρία Ιουλίττα ήρθε στην Αυστραλία στις αρχές του 1965. Από μικρό κοριτσάκι ήταν στους κόλπους της Εκκλησίας και των Κατηχητικών Σχολείων με πνευματικό πατέρα τον Λεωνίδα Παρασκευόπουλο, Μητροπολίτη Θεσσαλονίκης, ο οποίος συνάρπαζε τα πλήθη με τα κηρύγματά του, από τον Άμβωνα των Εκκλησιών και από το ραδιόφωνο. Η κυρία Ιουλίττα προικισμένη με πολλά χαρίσματα, με ευγλωττία εντυπωσιακή, με ευγένεια έμφυτη, αρχόντισσα αληθινή, με πλούσια μόρφωση, διέθετε πάνω από όλα αυτά ένα ήθος σπάνιο. Σεμνή και απέριττη εντυπωσίαζε από την πρώτη στιγμή. Παρ’ όλο που ήταν νιόπαντρη, από την πρώτη στιγμή που πάτησε το πόδι της στην Αυστραλία, σωστή Ιεραπόστολος, δεν έπαυσε να εργάζεται για το κοινωνικό όφελος. Πήγαινε στο YWCA και έκανε διάφορα κοινωνικά θέματα στις Ελληνίδες που ερχόντουσαν εδώ στην Αυστραλία. Έτυχε να βρεθώ στο κτήριο του YWCA και εκεί την συνάντησα για πρώτη φορά. Μου έκανε τρομερή εντύπωση. Κάθισα και την άκουσα. Όταν τελείωσε τον λόγο της, την πλησίασα και την ρώτησα αν είναι η δεσποινίς Ζήση (αυτό ήταν το πατρικό της όνομα). Ναι, μου είπε: Πού με ξέρεις; Προσωπικά όχι: Αλλά σας γνωρίζω από την αδελφή μου στην Ελλάδα. Κάθε φορά που γύριζε από την κατασκήνωση, μας μιλούσε για εσάς γεμάτη ενθουσιασμό, για τη θαυμάσια φωνή σας, τα τραγούδια σας, τα θέματά σας, τις ομιλίες σας. Έτσι γνωριστήκαμε. Αμέσως με σύστησε στον Κύκλο, που τότε Κυκλάρχισσα ήταν η αείμνηστη, δεσποινίς Άννα Τσιλιβή, άνθρωπος με βαθειά χριστιανική πίστη και αρετή. Η παρουσία της κυρίας Ιουλίττας αναζωογόνησε κυριολεκτικά τον Κύκλο μας. Είτε σαν αρχηγό κατασκηνώσεως την θαυμάζαμε, είτε, σαν Κυκλάρχισσα στην μελέτη της Αγίας Γραφής την

    ακούγαμε, είτε σαν φίλη γνήσια και ειλικρινή την απολαμβάναμε, είτε σαν σύμβουλο την εμπιστευόμασταν, ήταν πάντοτε μεταξύ μας φυσιογνωμία ηγετική. Με το ζήλο, τη ζωντάνια, την πείρα και τις ικανότητές της, ο Κύκλος άνθισε κυριολεκτικά. Ήταν πλούσια σε χαρίσματα που δεν τα κράτησε για

    τον εαυτό της. Χάρις στην κυρία Ιουλίττα ο κύκλος προόδευσε πολύ σε αριθμό αλλά και σε ποιότητα. Για εμάς ήταν το σωστό παράδειγμα,

    το πρότυπο που έπρεπε να ακολουθήσουμε. Πολλές βρήκαμε το δρόμο μας κοντά στο Χριστό χάρις στην κυρία Ιουλίττα. Η ασθένειά της έφερε μεγάλο κενό, στον κύκλο μας και στις καρδιές μας. ∆οκιμάστηκε πολύ τόσο αυτή όσο και η οικογένειά της. Αλλά δεν υπάρχει αμφιβολία. Το τονίζω: δεν υπάρχει αμφιβολία… Μια μαρτυρία Ανάστασης μένει η ζωή σου, στεφανωμένη από τη Χάρη… Χριστός Ανέστη! Κυρία Ιουλίττα… Έτριξαν στην ορμή σου, υποχωρώντας και άνοιξαν διάπλατα οι Αιώνιες Πύλες του Παραδείσου και πέρασες Ορθή προς την Αθανασία… Αιωνία σου η μνήμη! Π. Γ.

    R everence (ευλάβεια) may be defined as awe, devotion and respect towards the sacred. According to Elder Paisios (1924-1994) the reverent person feels the presence of God throughout their life and behaves accordingly with care, spiritual sensitivity and meekness. He used to say “reverence is the most important virtue because it attracts the grace of God”. He also said: “There is a great danger that if somebody rejects the little things, this rejection could proceed to the bigger and more holy things and without realizing it, justifying themselves that ‘this thing doesn’t matter’ and ‘that thing doesn’t do me harm’, they could, God forbid, lead to complete rejection of holy things, become irreverent, insensitive and atheist”. He taught that reverence is particularly important for our participation in the church services: “We should offer to God the best we have for worship. Also our full strength, our pure prayer, and not our yawns”. On one occasion, he was told of a monastic brotherhood on the Mount Athos who were well known for their strict order and discipline in the church services: “If that comes from deep within them, I will respect it”. For Elder Paisios, reverence was all-important. To one young monk who asked him what should he be most careful of, he answered: “Reverence and attention to yourself”. A Russian bishop once asked him: “Whom should I ordain as priest?” (there were many candidates for the priesthood). Elder Paisios replied: “The reverent and the pure”. He did not say the educated ones, the best chanters, or the best workers. All who knew Elder Paisios testified to his great reverence. He used to show this in the manner he prayed, the way he prostrated the icons, the way he partook of Holy Communion, how he held icons during the processions, even how he would chant. He loved the ecclesiastical books so much that many times he would hug them. He was once suffering from a painful hernia when he visited another monk. The monk begged him to lie down a little so he could rest. However, he did not accept the offer because he could only lie on his left side with his feet towards the icons, something he regarded as irreverent.

    Sept 12th Gospel Reading, (John 3: 13-17) Sunday Before the Elevation of the Cross

    13No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

    T his passage recalls an event from the Old Testament. After the Israelites had left Egypt, they travelled through the desert for forty years before reaching the Promised Land. During this time they often rebelled against God. On one occasion, as a punishment for their rebellion, God sent poisonous snakes to attack them and many Israelites died. Moses saved the Israelites by affix-ing the image of a bronze snake to a pole and lifting up the pole for all to see. By looking at the image of the snake on the pole, the Israelites would be cured from the deadly bites of the poisonous snakes. This miracle-working image prefigured Christ being lifted up on the Cross. As believers behold the crucified Christ in faith, the power of sin and death is overthrown in them. Just as the image of a snake was the weapon that destroyed the power of the snakes, so the instrument of Christ’s death becomes the weapon that overthrows death itself. In our spiritual struggle, the great poisonous snake which we fight against is Satan himself. Through the power of Christ’s death on the Cross, we overcome the deadly poison which Satan inflicts upon our soul through sin and we inherit eternal life. The final verses of this passage confirm the reason why Christ was lifted up on the Cross. It was because “God so loved the world”. Out of God’s great and indescribable love for the whole of the world, a world immersed in sin, God willed that His own precious Son should die and pay the cost of that sin, so that each person who believes in Him would avoid eternal death and have eternal life. This is the reason why Christ was sent into the world – not to condemn the world, “but that the world through Him might be saved”.

    T he prosforo, literally meaning ‘the offering’, is the Altar Bread from which the Body of Christ in Holy Communion is prepared. Its use, of course, can be traced back to the Last Supper where Jesus took bread, blessed it and said, “take, eat, this is my body, which is broken for you for the remission of sins”. It is a core belief of Orthodox Christians that during the Divine Liturgy, the bread is transformed into the Body of Christ, and the wine into His Blood; and by partaking in Holy Communion, we ingest Christ Himself, joining to Him in the most intimate way. Holy Communion is thus the central part and the major reason for the Divine Liturgy.

    In this context, the prosforo is just so important. It is the offering; in other words, the gift that we offer to God, which He transforms into something so much greater. Our gift is very small in comparison to His gift that it seems insignificant, but just like a little gift that is given from a child to a parent with love and gratitude is so much appreciated and treasured, so is our gift treasured when it is offered with love and gratitude. Hence the prosforo needs to be prepared and baked with the utter care, love, reverence and sense of gratitude.

    The stamp of the prosforo illustrates all the important aspects of the offering. In the centre of the stamp is the

    ‘lamb’; the portion that becomes the Body of Christ. On it is the inscription ‘ΙC XC NIKA’, meaning ‘Jesus Christ conquers’. By this we remember Jesus’ divinity and omnipotence, and that by joining Him by partaking in Holy Communion we acquire these qualities by grace.

    On the left of the lamb as we look at the prosforo is a triangle representing the All-Holy Mother of God, and on the other side are nine little triangles representing the nine classes of saints. The priest commemorates the saints as he takes each portion and places it on the diskarion. He also commemorates the names of the living and the departed. The priest has his own list of people that he commemorates, and each person that brings a prosforo to church also brings his or her own list of names. In this way, there is true communion in the Church, between the living and the dead, between the Militant Church and the Triumphant Church, and between each other, all surrounding and being engulfed by the head of the Church which is Christ.

    It is amazing, then, that a humble loaf of bread, a prosforo, can contain so much meaning, so that the stamp on it can encapsulate the essence of our faith, worship and communion. It would be wonderful if all of us, with the appropriate reverence, can be involved in the making of the prosfora, so that we can have a most direct part to play in making the offering to Christ, and by which we join to Him in a way like no other.

Η καρτερική και μαρτυρική σου σιωπηλή παρουσία και βιωτή και αυτή των συγγενών και όλων που

    σε γνώρισαν, μας δίδαξε περίτρανα ότι η Ψυχή, η Θεϊκή αυτή πνοή, διόλου δεν σμικρύνθηκε αλλά παρέμεινε ακμαία και αθάνατη. Έτσι ξημερώματα στις 29 Ιουλίου 2010 πέταξε στους Ουρανούς, πάνω σ’ Αγγελικά φτερά και συναντήθηκε με τους προγόνους σου «εν κόλποις Αβραάμ». Είσαι τώρα σε χώρο εξωγήινο, όπου τα πάντα σμίγουν στην αγκαλιά της Θεϊκής Αγάπης κι’ απαλύνουν κάθε καημό ανθρώπινο, θλίψη και αμηχανία. Εμείς εδώ στη Γη σε προπέμπουμε και σε εγκωμιάζουμε με λόγια σοφών προγόνων μας. Αν ζούσε σήμερα ο πολύς Περικλής θα εκφραζόταν ίσως έτσι, «Γυναικών επιφανών, πάσα Γη τάφος». Η Εκκλησία ψάλλει, «Μακαρία η οδός ή διάγει σήμερον, ότι ητοιμάσθη σοι τόπος αναπαύσεως». Ο Μέγας Βασίλειος λέγει, «Τους προσφιλούς μας νεκρούς, δεν τους κατέκρυψεν η Γη, αλλά τους υπεδέχθη ο Ουρανός». Ο πατήρ Στέφανος μίλησε από «καρδίας» στο Τρισάγιο κατασυγκινημένος, από τον μακροχρόνιο και ομόψυχο δεσμό με το ζεύγος Αντωνιάδη. Ο δε Σεβασμιώτατος πνευματικός μας πατέρας και Αρχιεπίσκοπος, κ.κ. Στυλιανός , σε εγκωμίασε όπως μόνον αυτός μπορεί, και σε απεκάλεσε «Κυρία». Όλοι δε μαζί ευχόμαστε και προσκαρτερούμε να ξανασυναντηθούμε «εν Χώρα Ζώντων».

    Μ ε την αποδημία σου εις Κύριον, ορφάνευσαν και θρηνούν: τρεις χώρες (Ελλάδα, Κύπρος, Αυστραλία), τρεις πόλεις (Θεσσαλονίκη, Λεμεσός, Σύδνεϋ), οι κατά σάρκα συγγενείς σου και οι αμέτρητοι εν Κυρίω αδελφοί σου. Γιατί το διάβα σου χάραξε βαθιά αυλακιά στη Γη και στις καρδιές μας, κι’ άφησε σημάδια λυτρωμού στο πέρασμά του. Είσαι αλησμόνητη και ανδρειωμένη, με πολυποίκιλτη προσωπικότητα μέσα στο Ελληνορθόδοξο καλειδοσκόπιο των ιδεωδών. Στην πρακτική δε εφαρμογή, ενσωματώνεις ότι σπουδαίο και ωραίο και αγνό, μπορεί νάχει μια ψυχή, και που θα παραμείνει μαζί μας στις ζωές μας. Είσαι η κατ’ εξοχήν διδασκάλισσα του Γένους σ’ αυτόν τον τόπο. Οι απαράμιλλες δραστηριότητες σου άρχισαν από την τρυφερή παιδική ηλικία σου. Τότε μαζί με τον αδελφό σου Κώστα, αθώοι και αφελείς, αλλά με ριψοκίνδυνη καρδιά, φυγαδεύατε Άγγλους, Νεοζηλανδούς και Αυστραλούς μαχητές, που είχαν εγκλωβιστεί στη σιδερόφρακτη Γερμανική φασιστική κατοχή της Θεσσαλονίκης. Εκεί από τους ατραπούς και τα δρομάκια της πόλης του Αη-∆ημήτρη, τους οδηγούσατε στις φωλιές φυγάδευσης των στη Μέση Ανατολή. Τιμήθηκε ιδιαίτερα η οικογένειά σου από τους Άγγλους μεταπολεμικά. ∆εν δίστασες όμως ούτε στιγμή να επιστρέψεις τα Μετάλλια αναγνώρισης στους ίδιους Άγγλους, δήμιους τώρα του ηρωικού Κυπριακού λαού από το 1955, όταν ήσουν διδασκάλισσα του Κυπριακού Γένους. Ήρθες στην Αυστραλία σύζυγος, σύντροφος και συνεργάτης στον ειρηνικό αγώνα, αντάξια του συζύγου σου, του αγαπητού μας «ιατρού», του καθηγητή της Νευρολογίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο ΝΝΟ, Μιχαήλ Αντωνιάδη. Αυτός, με την συνεργασία του Κυπρίου Φειδία Κυριακίδη στην αρχή, και λίγο αργότερα του Γέροντα πατέρα Στέφανου, άρχισαν από το 1955 ένα έργο Χριστιανικής Αγάπης, που επηρέασε την ζωή χιλιάδων νεοφερμένων Ελλήνων μεταναστών. Ρούφηξαν με λαχτάρα τις Ευαγγελικές αλήθειες μέσα στα Κατηχητικά Σχολεία, στις Εκκλησίες μας, στα Χριστιανικά Βιβλία, τις συνάξεις, τις ομιλίες και κηρύγματα – όλα μέσα στα πλαίσια της

    Η παρούσα επιστολή εστάλη από τον κ. Νικόλαο Βασιλειάδη, στέλεχος της Αδελφότητος Θεολόγων «Ο Σωτήρ», προς τον κ. Αντωνιάδη, σύζυγο της αειμνήστου Ιουλίττας Αντωνιάδου:

    Ἀ ξιότιμε καί λίαν ἀγαπητέ μου κ. Ἀντωνιάδη, Παρακαλῶ δεχθῆτε καί γραπτῶς τά θερμά μου συλλυπητήρια ἐπί τῇ ἐξόδῳ τῆς προσφιλοῦς σας συζύγου Ἰουλίττας. Κατανοῶ τή θλίψη καί τόν πόνο σας γιά τήν στέρηση, ὄχι ἁπλῶς μιᾶς συζύγου, ἀλλ' ἑνός πολυτιμοτάτου καί ἀναντικατάστατου συντρόφου, συναγωνιστοῦ καί ἄξιου συμπαραστάτου τῆς ζωῆς σας. Ἡ μακαριστή Ίουλίττα ἦταν σπάνιος ἄνθρωπος. ∆έν ἦταν ἁπλῶς χριστιανή, ἀλλά βαθύτατα συνειδητή χριστιανή, ζέουσα τῷ πνεύματι, μορφή κατ' ἐξοχήν ἱεραποστολική, γεμάτη στοργή στόν πλησίον, ἀκέραιη στή ζωή της, ἀρχόντισσα σέ ὅλα της, μετρημένη στά λόγια της, συνετή καί αξιοπρεπής στήν ὅλη της συμπεριοφορά, και πάντα μέ βαθύ στοχασμό καί γόνιμο προβληματισμό.

    Αὐτά τά γράφω ἐξ ἰδίας πείρας, διότι τήν γνώρισα πολύ καλά καί συνεργάστηκα ἄριστα μαζί της, ὅταν διακονοῦσα ὠς θεολόγος-ἱεροκήρυκας στήν Ἱερά Μητρόπολη Πάφου τό 1959-1960, αὐτή δέ ὑπηρετοῦσε ὡς καθηγήτρια φιλόλογος στή Λεμεσό. Τότε εἶχε συνεγείρει κυριολεκτικά τή Λεμεσό. Ὅλοι μιλοῦσαν

    γιά τήν δεσποινίδα Ζήση. Καί εἶχαν απόλυτο δίκαιο. Βοήθησε τότε πάρα πολλές νέες, ἀλλά καί ὥριμες, πού μέχρι σήμερα διατηροῦν ἄριστες καί ζωηρότατες ἀναμνήσεις. Τό πόσα ἐργάστηκε καί τί καρπούς ἔφερε ἡ ἄοκνος καί ἐνθουσιώδης ἱεραποστολική της διακονία στήν Αὐστραλία τά γνωρίζετε σεῖς πολύ καλά. Ἤδη τά ἔργα αὐτῆς ἀκολουθεῖ μετ΄ αὐτῆς.

    Τώρα ψάλλει μέ ὅλη τή θριαμβεύουσα Ἐκκλησία τό Τρισάγιον Ὕμνο στόν Νυμφίο Χριστό ἀτενίζουσα τήν δόξαν τοῦ Κυρίου, τόν ὁποῖον ἐκ καρδίας ἠγάπησεν καί ἐκ ψυχῆς διηκόνησεν καί ἐδόξασεν ἐπί τῆς γῆς. Καί βέβαια εὔχεται ὑπέρ τοῦ ἀγαπημένου της Μιχαήλ, τοῦ συζύγου καί συναγωνιστοῦ της, ὑπέρ τῶν προσφιλῶν τέκνων της Πασχαλίτσας, Ἀντώνη καί Μαρίας καί τῶν ἐγγονῶν της, καί πάντων ἡμῶν.

    Αὐτά ὅλα καί πάρα πολλά ἄλλα πρέπει νά σᾶς παρηγοροῦν καί νά σᾶς κάνουν νά δοξάζετε τόν πανάγαθον Κύριον, ὁ ὁποῖος ἐν τῇ ἀγάπη Του σᾶς ἐχάρισε μίαν τόσον πολύτιμη σύντροφο, "γυναικα ἀνδρείαν", κατά τόν σοφό Παροιμιαστή, ἡ ὁποία τώρα σᾶς συμπαρίσταται μέ τίς προσευχές της. Αὐτές ζητῶ ταπεινά καί ἐγώ καί σᾶς χαιρετῶ.

    Repose of Mrs Julie Anthony

    W ith deep sadness we report that on the 29th July 2010, Mrs Julie Anthony, former

    leader and pillar of the Orthodox Ladies Fellowships of Sydney, finally succumbed to her long battle with illness and fell asleep in the Lord. Her funeral service at St Spyridon parish, Kingsford, was officiated by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos in the presence of numerous clergy and laity. His Eminence spoke of her faith, dignity and charitable work within the Archdiocese spanning several years. Mrs Anthony is fondly remembered by countless faithful for her zealous missionary work, bringing many women and young girls into the folds of the Church. Under her leadership, the Orthodox ladies Fellowships blossomed and continue to grow to this day. In this edition of Lychnos, we present three articles written by some who knew her well and were deeply moved by her example. She is survived by her husband, Associate Professor Michael Anthony, lay preacher of our Archdiocese, and her three children Lillian, Anthony and Maria. May our Lord, whom she worthily served in this life, grant her deserved rest among His Saints.

    Visit to Sydney by St Nectarios Parish, Adelaide

    O n the 31st August, a group of about

    twenty young people from the Holy Monastery of St Nectarios, Croydon Park, Adelaide, accompanied by their spiritual father Hieromonk Fr Silouan, visited Sydney and were welcomed by the Greek Orthodox Christian Society in a special reception held at the church hall of All Saints, Belmore. The event included a talk, a play, and Christian songs and hymns from the men’s and women’s Fellowships and the youth Omathes of Sydney. We pray that God continues to strengthen and bless Fr Silouan and the parishioners of St Nectarios, to firmly establish their Monastery and spread the light of Orthodoxy in their native South Australia.
