Habits of a Scholar: Executive Skills * Perseverance* Enthusiasm * Compassion *Teamwork AT HOME: Students can write in journals, make lists, write letters, write stories, or practice writing any other way. Reading Second graders should be able to read between 50 and 80 words per minute. We are working on reading fluently and accurately, while understanding what we are reading. Use key strategies (make inferences, draw conclusions, predicting, make connections, summarizing, asking questions) to comprehend text. Read fluently and accurately on grade level. Summarizing and retelling a text is very important. AT HOME: Please make sure your child has access to just-right books to read at home. The Basalt Library is a great resource. If your child is borrowing school books, please make sure they are returned! Reading What is the Five Finger Rule? If they cant read any 5 words on a page, it is too hard. If they have 0-3 fingers up, that book is fine for homework purposes. The book should be interesting too! We use the following measures to measure your childs progress in reading: DIBELS (assesses accuracy, fluency and retell of grade-level text) Phonics inventories and/or Words Their Way (assesses your childs ability to decode sounds and patterns) Running Records (assesses your childs accuracy and fluency on independent text) Current curricular materials (assesses comprehension and reading strategies) Ongoing classroom observations and assessments on all areas of reading (comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, phonics, and phonemic awareness) Monitoring Reading Progress Students will write a multi-page text with a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion. Our main areas of instruction are narrative, informational, opinion, and poetry. AT HOME: Students can write in journals, make lists, write letters, write stories, or practice writing any other way.
