VISION

MAKE YOUR PRACTICE THE BRIGHTEST STARWITH RIGEL AR

Rigel is one of the brightest stars in the sky, about 47,000 times as luminous as the Sun, despite being over 800 light years away.

For more information call Sutherlin Optical at 816-421-0369 or 800-999-8193

Rigel is the answer to the success of your glare free program, providing a value solution to add to your product resume. Value AR is an untapped market that exists because 40% of consumers are value oriented. How would an extra 40% capture rate look on your bottom-line? We know that a large percentage of patients who purchase value glare free lenses upgrade to premium the next time around. That means enhanced acuity for every patient in your practice, greater revenue today and in the future.

Ease of Care… Super hydrophobic — finger prints and face oils wipe right off.

Durability… Dramatically improves scratch resistance.

Comfort… Allowing your patients the best visual acuity, all the time.

1 year warranty.

Spring has sprung, and a lot has happened over the last three months.

I have visited SLOS, COS, KCOS, GOOS and NEOS. I will finish up my tour of Missouri in Joplin and Poplar Bluff.

We had a great Legislative conference in January. Dr. Chris Wroten from Louisiana was our speaker. He did an excellent job speaking on emerging technologies and how Louisiana was able to pass an exclusive law in their state.

Most of our events were held at a new venue for us, the Millbottom. The Millbottom is a block north of the Capitol and was well received by our members and legislative friends. Our past president Dr. Lake showed off his true talents during our legislative reception as he was our bartender!!!

The AOA had their semi-annual presidents’ council meeting in Clearwater Florida in January. Drs. Lee Ann Barrett, Mindy Blackford and I attended for Missouri. At that meeting I proposed a resolution changing the AOA due’s structure. This resolution replaces the current five year escalating structure for new graduates to a ten-year structure.

In Missouri we have struggled to retain our new members from years 3-5 out of school and hopefully the proposed resolution will help with retention. We had a lot of valuable feedback from other states on our resolution and are encouraged it will pass in June in Denver at Optometry’s Meeting®. If it passes, then it will be voted on in June of 2019 in St. Louis at Optometry’s Meeting as a permanent change.

Disruptive technologies like Opternative and now 1-800 contacts trying to DE-regulate contact lenses is a topic we have been working on with our state legislators to shore up our current state statute. The bill has been filed in the Senate. The bill sponsor is Senator Jeanie Riddle from district 10 in central Missouri. It is SB1100, The Patient Safety Act.

We must get this important change in our statue passed to protect the citizens of Missouri from these companies that are worried only about their bottom line and not the health and well-being of the patient’s eyes. Please be ready to help urge our legislators to support it when you

are called upon by our central office. It is currently in Committee and we will keep everyone updated when phone calls are needed to be made.

Please mark your calendars for our two remaining 2018 events:

We have our annual Leadership retreat this year on June 1-2 at the Lake of the Ozark’s. It will be held at “Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville Resort”, formally Tan-Tar-A resort.

In October we will be holding our Annual MOA Convention in Branson. It has traditionally been at the Chateau on the Lake, but this year it will be at the Hilton at the Branson Convention Center, October 11th-14th.

I look forward to the rest of my presidency and excited in the direction the MOA is heading.

If you need to contact me, please do not hesitate. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your president 2017-2018.

MOA 2018 Legislative Conference WrapUpAs usual, the weather was a little dicey for the MOA legislative conference. A few folks were unable to make it, but those that did were able to enjoy the new venue for the meeting. The board met at the DoubleTree Hotel on Sunday morning. That afternoon, committee meetings were held at the Millbottom, just west of the Capitol. Monday morning at the Millbottom featured Dr. Chris Wroten, one of Missouri’s favorite guest speakers. Dr. Wroten presented a lecture on new technology and how it will affect the practice of optometry. He also shared the Louisiana experience with attendees.

We also had a new supplier for cinnamon rolls this year. No more cinnamon bites, but real, honest to goodness rolls! They were delicious. The reviews were great! The legislative reception was back at the Millbottom. Board members went into action and served as bartenders and later the clean-up crew.

All in all it was a success.

The comments afterward were so positive that we have booked the same venue for the 2019 event.Mark your calendars for January 13th and 14th. See you there!

Central Missouri Optometric Society (COS) The Central Society continues to meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month. We have gotten some quality CE in the past few months, which we typically don’t do, so it has been a nice change. We had a great retina/OCT CE from Dr. Wayne Davis who practices at Retina Associates in Columbia. Shire was sponsoring CE for Xiidra, so we combined that with our meeting in March. We may slow down a little for the summer, it varies from year to year.

Greater Ozark Optometric Society (GOOS) In January the Greater Ozark Optometric Society met at Catania Laredo restaurant to discuss upcoming items with the MOA. It was our first meeting after the Thanksgiving/Christmas break.

In February the GOOS hosted Nova Bay at Ocean Zen restaurant to discuss the benefits of Avenova; a prescription eyelid and eye lash hygiene product.

In March the GOOS hosted current MOA president Tom Cullinane. Dr. Cullinane discussed his areas of interest for the MOA this year and beyond. We had a great turn out for this event with around 25 ODs attending the MOA Presidential visit.

Kansas City Optometric Society (KCOS) The Kansas City Society started off 2018 with

re-electing officials. Here is the new 2018 executive board:

President: Jared Jaynes, OD Vice-President: Kevin Tomasu, OD Secretary / Treasurer: Lauren Hendrickson, OD Past-President: Melissa Enevoldsen, ODA social gathering was hosted in February at

Boulevard Brewing company with a great turnout. For the March meeting, we had dinner and 2 hours of CE on the topic of uveitis presented by Dr. Anthony DeWilde.

Our March meeting consisted of CE on the PEDIG Amblyopia Treatment Studies by Dr. Marni Harris OD, a resident at Children’s Mercy Hospital.

I invite optometrists to attend our society meetings for a wonderful time as we continue to build the attendance at society functions!
