OIL ININDONESIAIn November 2004,
in the village of Lhokseumawe, Indones
ia, Yusuf and Anwarset off before dawn
to
catch fish for their families. Local villager
s had been fishing off the coastal region
of Aceh for generations.
Oil and gas giant, ExxonMobil, operates
in the same town, and since 2001 has
forbidden fishing
within 2 kilometresof their operations.
The heavy rain andfog made it difficul
t for Yusuf and Anwar to see the buoys
marking the restricted
areas. Despite that, they were several k
ilometres away fromthe area when a mi
litary boat began firing
at them. Anwar waskilled. Yusuf was ca
ptured and taken tothe local military he
adquarters where he
was threatened, interrogated, beaten a
nd tortured for tendays.
Yusuf continues tosuffer from post-traumatic stres
s disorder. He is unable to fish and ha
s been
forced to take small construction jobs
instead. He can nolonger support his
family.
For members of thelocal population, Ex
xonMobil is responsible. Eleven villager
s have filed a lawsuit
in the United Statesagainst the compan
y alleging Indonesian soldiers hired by
the company abused
and murdered theircompatriots.
