The Pacific Smelting Foun dation educational scholarship is exclusively for graduating seniors in the Torranr*. school system who desire to obtain a mathematics, scientific, or engineering degree in an ac credited university. The recipient of this schol arship is chosen on the basis of scholastic record, charac ter, citizenship, leadership, aptitude, and general educa tional outlook. Applicants present a writ- ten report on their qualifica tions and are given a person al interview. This year applications were received from North High, South High, and Torrance high schoolH. all of the Tor rance Unified School District. The scholarship will pro vide harry $500 a year for five years to assist him in his college expense*. He will en roll at UCLA and major in mathematics. Winners of this scholarship in prior years were: 1057, Laurence L. George, who will soon be a senior at UCLA majoring in engineering; 1958, Walter A. Sapp, currently at tending University of Califor nia at Berkeley and a math ematics major; 1959, Howard A. Borer, also attending Ber keley with a major in math ematics. Arnold and Kathlyn Staat, who reside at ]7(K).'l Arrtath, are parents of Larry. He has two brothers, Bill. 20, Steph en, 9, and one sister, Pat ricia, 12. Larry has a grade-point av erage of 4, which means straight A through his en tire high-school career. He was No. 1 in class standing of 343 students. He has been active in all phases of school activities. Pacific Smelting Co. is a pioneer Torrance plant which produces "Pasco Zinc Prod ucts." Their production in cludes the highest quality slab zinc, zinc oxide, zinc dust, and zinc alloys. These products are used by steel mills, galvanizers, rubber, paint, ceramic and metal in dustries.
