ITALIAN WORD ASSOCIATION NORMS

Domenico ParisiUniversity of Illinois

ABSTRACT

Single word associations to two lists of Italian stimu2.us words were

collected from two groups of 100 high school students each. List 1

included 100 words, 81 of which were Italian translations of K-R stim-

ulus words. List 2 included 92 words so selected that the primary

responses to List 1 words were all included as stimulus words in either

List 1 or List 2. The word association norms obtained differ from

previous Italian published norms in that all the association hierarchy

is shown for each stimulus word, and, for at least 100 words, it is

known whether or not, and to what extent, its primary response gives

back the stimilus word as a response. These norms are compared with word

associatico norms in other languages and some discrepancies with the

results of previous comparisons are discussed.

ITALIAN WORD ASSOCIATION NRM

Research on word association behavior has been rapidly growing

in the past 10 or 15 years, paralleling the increase of interest

in the general area of vebal learning and the development of PPYcW-

LuWUWstics. Recent work on word associations has not only been

very intense, but it has had very different purposes, aiming at

extracting different kinds of information from the data, as compared

with traditional pre-war research in the field. The classical orien-

tation was clinical and diagnostic; it was directed at differentiating

people on the basis of their free-association behavior or at discover-

ing areas of emotional conflict in a patient. Today new ways of

looking at word association data have developed. Word associations

are a part of normal verbal behavior which can be used for a number

of puposes. Word association data may be seen as something valuable

in itself, that is , as verbal behavior which can be analyzed to obtain

information on verbal habits and their development. An example is the

tendency of associative responses to becoe more and more of the same

grammatical class as the stimulus word as the subjects giving them grow

older. This has been related to the development of grammatical behavi-

ors (Brown and Berko, 1960; Ervin, 1963; NcNeill, 1963).

iWork was accorplished at the Consiglio Nazionale Delle RicercheIstituto Nazionale I Psicologia , Roma Italy.

Page 6: EEEEEhEEEE · PDF file-EEEEEhEEEE EEEEEESEE. ... (N -14) by means of a test battery,including Rosenzweig's Picture Frustration Test and Zulliger's Test,

A different, but not unrelated, approach is to use word association

norms to study other types of verbal behavior or even behavior which is

not primarily linguistic. This is an extremely large and active area of

research. It is sufficient to mention that a theory of associative mea-

ning has been developed from the word association data (Deese, 1962)

and that a similar approach has been used to study meaning similarity

(Cofer, 1957; Garskof and Houston, 1965) and semantic generalization

(Mink, 1965; Bousfield, Whitmarsh, and Danick, 1958). In addition, ass-

ociative structures as revealed by word association norms have been

found to influence a number of behaviors ranging from free learning to

problem solving.

To pursue these lines of research word association norms are neces-

sary. In the United States norms have been repeatedly collected and

compared to each other and to norms collected in other English-speaking

contries or in countries where a language other than English is spoken.

Analysis of the various norms shows that they are mostly influenced by

such factors as the subjects' characteristics (mainly: age, sex, and

occupation), the year of collection, and the conditions of collection

(e.g., aural vs. visual stimulus-word presentation).

Very little has been done in this field in Italy. In thE original

Kent-Rosanoff tradition, Banissoni and Nencini (1957) collected norms

from 100 Ss (age:l8-20) for 100 words partly from the Kent-Rosanoff

list and partly from Jung's list. Then they administered their list to

a group of 24 Ss who had been classified as either "normal" (N-10) or"non-normal" (N - 14) by means of a test battery,including Rosenzweig's

Picture Frustration Test and Zulliger's Test, and interview information.

A communality score was able to differentiate between these two groups

of subjects.

Levi (1949) has collected word associations from 229 Italian Ss for

an unpublished master's thesis and these norms have been compared by

9

Rosenzweig (1961; Rosenzwcig and Miller, 1966) with similar norms

collected in the United States, France, and Germany Levits norms are

available 2, but they include the primary responses only and moreover

these primary responses are printed in an English translation and can-

not therefore be dircctly compared with Italian data.

The only published Italian word association norms are contained in

three papers by Chiari (1959; 1961a; 1961b ), who was concerned with

developmental and comparative aspects related to word association beh-

avior. These norms also have shortcomings. They are based on a limited

number of subjects and include the primary responses only, leaving out

the whole associative hierarchy.

As a first step to solving the problem of norms, free associations

to 192 stimulus words were collected from a group of Italian Ss.These

words were so selected that for at least 100 of them it is known whether

or not, and to what extent, the primary response gives back its stimulus

word as a response. This will provide normative data for studying the

effects of directionality of word associations in a iumber of fields.

Moreover, all the associations given to a stimulus word were tabulated

and are shown in the norms. This allows the study of various aspects of

meaning and meaning similarity which cannot be studied when only the

primary response to a given word is known. Both these proerties of the

present word association norms are utilized in the paired-associate

study described in the second part of this report.

METHOD

Stimulus Vords

Two lists of stimulus wordswere used for the collection of word

associations. List 1 included 100 words, 81 of which wero Italian tran-

slations of vtdsfcontained in the Kent-Rosanoff list. Translation of

th remainlzg 19v=da was avoided since it would have resulted in low-

frequency or non-equivalent Italian forms. To preserve the character of

the original Kent-Rosanoff list, 19 new worc which presumably were as

common as the remaining 81 were substituted for the orig11*l 19. Three

randomizations of this list of 100 words were used.

After collecting and tabulating the free associations to list 1,

a second list was constructed which included all primary responses to

list I words, with the exception of the primary responses which happ-

ened to be already contained in List 1 as stimulus words. List 2 was

coxposed of 60 primary responses to List 1 words and of 32 new words of

the same estimated frequency as List 1 words p for a total of 92 stimu-

lus words. Only one randomization was used for List 2.

Subjects8

Two hundred and ten students (153 males and 57 females) enrolled in

the last two years of high school ("liceo scientifico") served as So.

half for List 1 and half for List 2. Their mean age was 17-4.

Procedure

Each list was printed in three columns on a single sheet of paper.

Each word had a blank space on its right for providing the answer.

Ss were tested in groups varying from 20 to 3O( in number. After dis-

tribution of the word list, the instructions were read which emphasized

three main points: to answer with the first word that came to mind, to

answer with only one word, and to answer all items in the list. Time to

complete the list was unlimited, but Ss were told they should finish in

10 to 15 minutes.

Results and Discussion

The associative hierarchy of each of the 192 stimulus words is shown

in the Appendix. Also indicated is the number of different assocations

and the number of individual Moiaticas given to each stimulus word..Frequency of resporm indicated both number and percentage of subjects

giving a particular reponse, since only 100 responses, out of a maximum

of 105, were included in the ctunt. Because of omissions, and unreadable

or multiple reponses, the discarded responses were often less than five

per word. They were always randomly selected.

Rosenzweia and Miller (1966) compared word association norms colle-

cted in English-speaking ccuraels with similar norms collected in

European continental contries and found that communality of responses

is a distinguishing feature of the two groups of norms. Word associations

collected in the United States, Australia, and England show more commu-

nality of responses than associations collected in France, Germany, and

Italy. More specifically, the primary response accounts for more than

one-third of all responses and the first three responses account for

more than one-half of all responses in the English associations; whereas

the corresponding figures in the European associations are respectively

one-fifth and two-fifths of all responses. The Italian norms included in 4Rosenzweis and Miller's analysis are the one collected by Levi (1949),

which show the least communality of all the word associations being

compared by them. In Levi's norms the primary response accounts for only

17.7 per cent of all responses, this being the only available datum

since no response except the primary is included in these norms.

A different picture emerges from the present data. In the new Italian

norms, the primary response accounts for 27.5 per cent of all responses

I

6.

and the first three responses taken together account for 45.7 per cent

of all responses. The present norms show an increase in communality

not only in comparison with the previous norms for the same laguage,

but also when compared with the European average communality.

A number of possible explanations may be advanced for these

discrepancies. As Jenkins and Russell (1960) have determined for

American norms, there is a trend of increasing communality in word

associations as a function of time of collection. The present norms

were collected in 1965, whereas the European norms examined by Rozenweig

and Miller were published in 1948, 1955, 1958, and 1962, and collected

even before. This may at least partially account for the somewhat

higher communality of the new Italian norms as compared with kncwn

European norms. Levi's Italian norms show the least communality of

these European norms and are also the oldest of them (publication

year: 1949).

There is an additional factor which may have been operative in

reducing the communality of the old Italian norms. Levi's normative

sample was more heterogeneous as compared with the samples used for

the collection of all theother norms, the present ones included.

Where- all the subjects used in the other cases were students around

20 years of age, Levi's sample was more diversified in terms of both

age and occupation. As a number of studies have shown (Riegel, 1965;

Foley and MacMillan, 1943), both factors have an influence on word

associations and may therefore be thought to increase the number of

different responses given to each stimulus word.

Page 11: EEEEEhEEEE · PDF file-EEEEEhEEEE EEEEEESEE. ... (N -14) by means of a test battery,including Rosenzweig's Picture Frustration Test and Zulliger's Test,

7

In another study Rosenzweig (1961) compared the primary responses

given to the Kent-Rosanoff stimulus words in different countries and

found enough agreement among such responses to support, the idea of a

r6as-language verbal community which shares meanings under different

verbal forms. English, French, German, and Italian word associations

to the Kent-Rosanoff list were compared using the same norms for these

countries as the ones examined by Rosenzweig and Miller (1966). From

this point of view also Levi's norms were distinctively different from

the other norms. They shared fewer primary responses with English,

French, and German norms than these three norms shared with each other.

Again, the present Italian norms give a different picture. As may be

seen from Table 1, when compared with Rosenzweig's data, the new

Italian word associations have more primary responses in common with

other languages, not only in comparison withthe primaries that Levi's

norms had in common with other languages, but also with the primaries

that these other languages have in common with each other. This gives

further support to the concept of a cross-language community of verbal

meanings first proposed by Rosenzweig (1961) and may even imply that

the increase in communality with time ascertained by Jenkins and

Russell (1960) occurs both intra- and cross-culturally. Some factor

or factors associated with time elapse would have the effect of

progressively enlarging the cross-language community of shared verbal

meanings. The latter suggestion might warrant further research.

In his study Rosenzweig (1961) .&1'so found evidence for a relation-

ship between frequency of a particular primary response in one language

Page 12: EEEEEhEEEE · PDF file-EEEEEhEEEE EEEEEESEE. ... (N -14) by means of a test battery,including Rosenzweig's Picture Frustration Test and Zulliger's Test,

8

and probability of the same response being given as primary in other

languages. Kurcz (1966) found no support for this hypothesis in her

comparison of Polish primaries with primaries in English, French, and

German norms. Polis primaries which share their meaning with primaries

in different languages are equally distributed above and below the

median associative freauency. The present Italian norms, on the con-

trary, give full support to Rosenzweig's contention. Table 2 shows,

separately for the responses above and below the median frequency,

the percentages of primary responses which the Italian norms have in

common with English, French, and German norms. These data confirmed

the hypothesis that the more frequent a primary response is in a

given language, the more stable it will be across languages.
