Diya Foundation provides vocational training and sheltered employment to differently abled adults in Bangalore.

2010-2011 Facilitating All Round DevelopmentAs a Special Educator, Maria nurtured a dream – ‘to set up a Vocational Training Centre that would enable her intellectually challenged students engage in meaningful tasks and become productive members of society.’ A Masters degree in Special Education and training as a Job Coach from St. Coletta, Jefferson, USA, equipped her to realise this dream on her return to India.

Diya Foundation was registered as a Trust on 22nd March, 1999

With a VISION....To see differently abled people and their families alive with dignity and pride in the present and hope for the future,

And a MISSION....To enrich the quality of life of differently abled adults by training them in vocational skills and empowering them to live fulfilling and productive lives.

As co-founder and CEO, Maria has ensured the steady growth of Diya Foundation over the last twelve years. Today, Diya’s training program facilitates the all round development of around 50 people with disabilities, 80% of who are from the lower socio-economic strata of society.

The CEO shares:

Successful initiatives to scale up operations at Diya in 2009 enabled us focus on all round development programs for our Trainees in 2010-11. The personalised training each one received ensured their steady progress. Work skills improved and confidence grew with awards they won at art and dance competitions. Two of them walked the ramp at a fashion show and some ran the Majja Run at the World 10K 2010. A few others visited corporate offices to display their works.

Diya has progressed through the service and support of many. We thank all donors, volunteers, well-wishers and staff. You have enabled us provide our Trainees with opportunities for growth and development. We value your continued support to realise our vision.

Navita PhilipDelayed milestones as a baby were a strong indication of the special help Navita’s parents would have to give her as she grew. At school, she struggled to keep pace with the rest. The system did not meet the needs of a slow learner. The family sought an alternative.Navita joined Diya’s Sheltered Workshop as an adult. In an encouraging environment, she discovered her skills and abilities while working on different tasks. Recognizing her potential, Diya had Navita trained on simple computer operations in 2009. In 2010, she began working on data entry in the Computer Unit. Precision and speed are her strengths. Hard working and efficient, she is a source of inspiration to all at Diya. Her mother speaks with pride of the all round development in Navita. Her achievements are a testimony to what opportunity and encouragement can do to individuals with special needs.

Shirley MetlinTen years ago, I took a road less travelled and joined Diya Foundation to train intellectually challenged adults. This decision changed the course of my life. The challenges I faced each day taught me that a lot could be achieved with compassion, encouragement and opportunity. Providing the trainees a nurturing environment to discover their abilities has been my goal. Their progress and growth is mine too. In 2010, Diya enrolled me in ‘The Navigator,’ a Leadership Training Program, organised by Common Purpose. In my new role as Supervisor, this training has given me the confidence to take on additional responsibilities. Through the spark that is Diya, it is my joy to light up special lives.

On the Road to Progress and Growth

“My son has improved, is active, mingles with people and follows instructions better. Thank you Diya.”Mr. A.C.Francis, Parent of a Diya trainee.

Forty intellectually challenged adults trained to work on a variety of tasks in the Sheltered Workshop. They also engaged in activities that enhanced their personal-social skills. These included art workshops with corporate volunteers, yoga, sports, a picnic, visits to places of interest, music and dance and lessons on health and hygiene.

Diya Foundation speaks of their achievements - the ability to be trained, work, earn and be independent to the extent possible.
