A Living and Learning Community of Neighbors
We celebrate and thank
Denise Kelly, CSJ,
for 17 years as Bethany Hill’sProgram Director. Her gentle leadership and inclusive spirit has shaped and grown our programs and created a truly vibrant community.
Dear Friends,
our community thrives on the strength of connection in overcoming adversity. Bethany Hill’s model of affordable housing paired with educational opportunity is unique in many regards, but our work with volunteers stands out as the best example of our efforts to ‘unite neighbor with neighbor,’ a value learned from the Sisters of St. Joseph.
the connection, generosity and commitment of our many volunteers infuse our community with energy and possibility. We have job coaches, technology and academic tutors for adults, help with homework for children, fitness instruc-tors, gardening experts, folks who provide music and those who provide music lessons, volunteers who provide meaningful afterschool and summer camp activities for children, and even people whose beloved dog has inspired a love of reading.
Helping individuals move beyond homelessness, addiction, violence, and loss to realize their own potential and goals is guided by these relationships, which have sown the seeds of empowerment and interdependence. We know that the support, instruction and connection have enabled our residents to dare to hope and make plans, but we’ve also been told by you that volunteering feels great and becomes a gift for the volunteer. these connections – authentic and personal - are transformative on both sides of the equation.
We are committed to carrying forward the ideals of inclusivity and human dignity that the Sisters of St. Joseph employed when they founded this nonsectarian model of antipoverty and educational programming. We are very grateful to those who have generously given to Bethany Hill. our success relies on growing connections like yours. We implore you to continue your support and to introduce our community to friends and colleagues who share these ideals so that this work may continue.

The success of the Bethany Hill model is our dual focus on work skills as well as foundational and life skills. We require involvement in education and/or training as a condition of residency. Our small staff and large corps of volunteers offer meaningful in-house programs and support to enable residents to meet the requirement and achieve their goals.
