Chapter I Introduction

Background

Most people enjoy hot spring. But, where does hot spring come from? And, how is it

formed? Most people feel curious of the two questions. So, we get some answers. “One of

the factories [factors] contributing to the formation of hot spring is heat source, Taiwan is

a young mountain range which is still relatively active. As a result, the Earth’s crust here

is rather unstable and layers of rock beneath are always being pulled or pushed under

great stress, thus becoming highly fractured. Below the crust where the semi-liquid rock

(magma) lies, the magma slowly builds up and rises upward or breaks through the crust,

forming an exceptionally hot zone. Sometimes a pool of heat energy is formed because

the chamber of magma below reverse fault, created as a result of tectonic moment, has

not yet cool.”(Hot Spring Museum at Batuo,2010)We enjoy the nature gift and make it

more and more popular.

In recent years, Taiwan’s tourism industry has been popular, especially hot spring. The

newspaper or magazines always report the news about hot spring every day now. The hot

spring activity is not only for seniors. Youngsters are also interested in this activity now,

especially in the package holidays including rooms and meals. So we hope we can get

more understanding about hot spring for youngsters by the research.

Research questions

How much do you know about Taiwan’s popular hot spring area? How do you get the

information about hot spring?

Will the price influence the frequency you visit hot spring?

Can the tourism industry nearby hot spring area attract more visitors to hot spring?

Purpose

The research aims to discuss that university students in Taiwan really understand

Taiwan’s hot spring. So the result of the research can help the people who really don’t

know about hot spring. The purpose is also to let students use the low price to get the

great benefit when they go to hot spring. It is hoped that the research is to let university

students in Taiwan know more details about Taiwan hot spring culture.

Chapter II Literature Review

Nowadays you have many different ways to plan a hot spring vacation, but first of all the

most important is いっぱく にしょく. “いっぱく にしょく means a package tour

including one night and two meals. In Japan, package tour price includes one night for

room and two meals. Each room has different price because it’s arranged for different

customers. いっぱく にしょく at first makes customers feel comfortable and

convenient. Customers don’t worry about problems of rooms and meals. ” (Yang Li

Fang, 2004)

Taiwan is named the precious island of hot spring village. “Where is the most popular hot

spring area in the world? The answer is Taiwan. This is unbelievable. Lots of people don’t

know the answer. In Taiwan, 128 hot spring areas are found and named already. This

number is increasing. ” (Chen Mei Feng, 2003) Hot spring becomes an extremely

important activity of entertainments. Taiwan has many hot spring resources. Furthermore,

hot spring can be combined with tourism industry which will benefit Taiwan’s hot spring

development. And you will have a lot of fun in Taiwan’s hot spring.

Chapter III Method

Participants

Our participants are universities students in Taiwan, so we look for friends who come

from north, south and center part of Taiwan to help us to collect data in terms of

questionnaires. The first part of questionnaires needs to mark the location where the

participants come from. It is because we would like to keep the survey accurate.

Instrument

We use questionnaire as our instrument to collect the data because the participants are

universities students in Taiwan. It is made by the students who come from all around

Taiwan to provide us with useful data.

Data Collection

We send three hundred questionnaires. Among them, two hundred thirty-seven were

retrieved. The returns-ratio is 79%.

There are 93 males and 117 females from the effective questionnaires.

Invalid questionnaires are 27. Male proportion is 39% and female proportion is 50%. We

organize some figures about the data. They will show us the result quickly and clearly.

Data Analysis

After the effective questionnaires have been retrieved, a series of figures is made

Page 12: µ â ( D ` | ¨Ðô2ir.lib.ksu.edu.tw/bitstream/987654321/14000/2... · j! Í > ` |âÁ] 8 æ [â ¨ ô ä Ä Þ ¨ yr ô Kó rÄ ZÐ÷ ö ¨ í è¶ Õ ² O Áÿ>Ð o (; ÿ ¶

according to the information from the statistics, in terms of each item of our designed

research questions. The data of these charts can explain our research questions. Finally,

we conduct a series of analysis and discussion according to these charts.

Chapter IV Discussion

Based on Taiwan’s special location and circumstance, hot springs spray throughout all

islands; therefore, it is easy for us to take hot spring during falls and winters. The research

aims to discuss the understanding of hot springs for most of the university students in

Taiwan as well as the awareness of Taiwan’s most popular hot springs. Besides, for

further study, we want to explore why those are so attractive.

The research question number one: How much do you know about Taiwan’s popular hot

spring area? How do you get the information about hot spring?

The research result shows that the “normal”,” not understanding” and” not understanding

well” and are 72% of the total. So the students do not really understand about hot spring

area in Taiwan. It can be clearly seen in Figure 1.

The research question number two: Will the price influence the frequency you visit hot

The reasonable price is NT1, 000~2,000.But they go there maybe just only once a year,

therefore, the price doesn’t affect the frequency.

Except the research questions, we have got some result from our questionnaire, because

student’s consumer competence are not very good, so if it can provide inexpensive hotel

Figure 6 the top three hot spring in Taiwan

We have counted three hot spring areas. First is Chih-pen, second is Beitou, and third is

Sihjongsi. The three areas are already the most popular in Taiwan, but why are they still

popular among students?

Page 17: µ â ( D ` | ¨Ðô2ir.lib.ksu.edu.tw/bitstream/987654321/14000/2... · j! Í > ` |âÁ] 8 æ [â ¨ ô ä Ä Þ ¨ yr ô Kó rÄ ZÐ÷ ö ¨ í è¶ Õ ² O Áÿ>Ð o (; ÿ ¶

11

Except the hot spring, we think combining the great scenic and local snack will be more

attractive, because the tourists can visit there after the hot spring. Like Sihjongsi is the

example.

Chih-pen is the famous hot spring in eastern Taiwan, where has the greatest scenic in

Taiwan. How can you miss such a place? The gluttons in Taiwan are crazy about the crab

in Chih-pen too.

Except the hot spring, Beitou has many museums that record the development of Taiwan

hot spring history. They are also great places worth visiting is also a great place to visit.

From all the examples of the above, we find out that not only all the hot spring areas,

everything around the area will affect if tourists will come back or not.

Chapter VI Conclusion

Everyone loves the hot spring campaign, and most of people go to hot spring for Leisure.

But the research shows us that reaching 73 percent of people who don’t really know about

hot spring. By this research, we hope we can let the people become interested in more

understanding about hot spring, The top three hot spring areas voted become our main

object of study; therefore we edit a magazine about hot spring. Hope it can help

University students know more about Taiwan’s hot spring.

Traveling book

We analyze the questionnaires. The top three are Beitou, Chi-pen and Sihjhongsi. Then

we visit the top three. By ourselves we can understand why they are popular. We also

collect the information about delicious food and good from there. Then by the

information a summary of book was made, which was designed to display our findings of

the research
