Design ResearchThe handheld games console needs to satisfy the consumer by providing portable entertainment while being able to fit into a pocket and cant be too heavy. It must be the correct size to fit into a child’s hand as the age range we are looking at is between 8 and 20. Our designs need to be suita-ble for both genders, therefore targeting a larger market. The target price we are aiming to market our product at is between £80 and £100 as this is the average industry price for new up-to-date games consoles.

We had four participants in our focus group. An-swers to the focus group study are as follows:Do you own a handheld games console? 3 x Yes 1 x No 2. If so what type? Nintendo DS Lite Game Boy PSP3. Do you think it’s the right size and weight to hold in your hands? 4 x Yes4. Do you prefer buttons of touch screen? 1 x Buttons 1 x Touch screen 2 x Both 5. Is screen size important to you? 4 x Yes 6. Would you be willing to pay more for a newer model? 4 x Yes7. Is branding important to you? 3 x Yes 1 x No8. When would you use it mostly? 3 x Travelling 1 x Both 9. What kind of new design would you be looking for? Something small, compact, easy to carry, er-gonomically designed, large buttons, spacious layout10. What is your opinion of our designs and proto-types we have made? The designs are really good and we like all the concepts. Our favourite was the curved one as this is different to all the flat, square designs that already exist. We really like the prototype, the curved back is good to grip and hold the console whilst the buttons are perfectly positioned for gaming. The only change that we would suggest is to make the buttons slightly bigger and slightly further apart for people who have bigger hands.

Storyboard

The handheld games console is carried around in your pocket. It is portable because itis so light in weight and small enough to fit into a pocket.

2The game of choice is inserted into the device through the game slot. If a kind of media is required to be watched or lis-tened to, it is required to be uploaded first.Once the game is in, it will start automati-cally. to eject the game click it in and it will come out.

The control panel can then be slid down to use or the touchscreen can be implemented meaning the con-trol panel doesnt need to be slid down and can re-main hidden.

To put the device away, just reverse the pro-cess. The game can be left in the device if the operator prefers to.

Final Design

There are 4 directional buttons for di-rectional use during games.

The screen is a touchscreen so the user can use the buttons for playing or use the touchscreen interface.

The surface is a plastic cover like most of the existing products, which means that it is durable and scratchproof.

There are in built speakers for the gaming experience. There is no audi jack for headphones though.

The screen is a wide enough screen to be seen from a distance for the user.

The console is in a horizontal shape, for the user to hold easily and com-fortably.

The two buttons are for the user to use when playing on the console.

There is a connection point that can be connected to a PC for uploading me-dia such as pictures, videos or music.

Evaluation

Large widescreen visible from a ditance

The screen is large enough to see from a dis-tance, being 140mm across. It is a HD col-our screen which means that it is clear and bright.

Ergonomic shape to fit any hand size feeling natural and comfortable to holdThe whole games console is the right size to ergonomically fit into the average male teen-age size hand. This means that for our target market, it is the right size and will be com-fortable.

Directional buttonsThe console does have directional buttons, which can be used during games.

Touchscreen to interact with games or menusThe screen is touchscreen so that the user can interact with games.

Must have a 35mm audio jack for head-phones/speakersThere is no audio jack for headphones but there are speakers.

Durable/hard surface to prevent scratch-es or damageThe surface is a durable plastic that is light in weight and durable to dropping and scratch-ing

2-4 playable buttonsThere are two buttons for use as well as touch-screen

Rectangluar shape(horizontal/landscape) The shape is in a horizontal shape, with the screen in the horizontal format across the console.

Clean, basic and ergonomic interface so any player can use itThe screen is touchscreen so that the user can interact with games.

Must be connectable to external plat-forms such as a PCThere is an external connection that can be connected to a PC or Macbook. This means that music, films or pictures can be down-loaded onto the console and used for viewing or listening as well as playing games.

Two anagloue sticks for a wider range of playingThere are no analogue sticks as there are di-rectional buttons and touchscreen.
