Schedule A Ribbon Cutting! Are you a new Chamber member? Has your business expanded or relocated? Are

you breaking ground for a new facility? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may want to schedule a Chamber Ribbon Cutting or Goundbreaking event.

These events take place weekly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Chamber staff will work with you to choose the date and time that best fits your schedule. Your event will be included in the Calendar of Events section of the Chamber Connections and your picture will also be featured in the newsletter after the event.

For more information or to book an event, contact Hayden Camp, director of membership, at (334) 792-5138 or [email protected].

Two Great Publications,One Great Idea!

Time Is Running OutLast Minute Reservations Welcome!

You want to reach new residents and the business community. They want to know how to find you. The best way to achieve both goals is to advertise in the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2019 Dothan’s Official Welcome Guide and the 2019 Membership Directory & Business Guide.

Two premier advertising spots are still available - Inside Front Cover and Back Cover. Also available are several Exclusive Business Profile pages (Custom Full-Page Article) in the following sections: Arts,

Culture and Community; Business & Economic Development; Active Adults; and Real Estate & Relocation. Now is your opportunity to snag these “hot” spot positions!

The Dothan Area Chamber and Print Services Inc., the Chamber member awarded this project, are still accepting ad reservations for these 2019 publications. Since DACC members (primary contact and/or advertising agent) began receiving the Chamber’s project introduction letter, verification form(s) and a “Reserve Your Space” brochure back in May 2018, Print Services has been contacting members about the different advertising opportunities available. A media kit is also available online at www.psiprinter.com.

The Welcome Guide and Membership Directory & Business Guide will be mailed to Chamber members in late January 2019. High visibility through great distribution has been the key to the Welcome Guide’s success. Increased usage of the Membership Directory is a direct result of its convenience to find fellow business members to promote our business-to-business relationships. Don’t miss out on these important publications! Your company will benefit greatly by reaching all who look to the Dothan Area Chamber for information about Dothan businesses in 2019.

Distribution of the Welcome Guide (10,000) includes economic development prospects, new residents, prospective retirees and relocation families requesting information through the Chamber, 15 Chamber member apartment complexes for new residents, 15 Chamber member hotels/motels in-room distribution and the Dothan Utilities and Wiregrass Electric Cooperative offices to all new service customers. Great web exposure is another avenue of distribution for the 2019 Welcome Guide. The publication will be on the following websites: The City of Dothan, Houston County, Dothan Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce and Print Services Inc.

Beginning A New EraYesterday, Today, Tomorrow

CoverStory

Dothan is one of the region’s most progressive cities. The area embraces the best that life has to offer, providing residents not only modern conveniences and amenities of much larger cities, but also retains the charm and friendliness of the South. The Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce has been there helping to shape the future of the Wiregrass area since its foundation in 1919 with G. S. Jackson serving as the first president.

In his book, “Dothan, A Pictorial History,” author Wendell Stepp notes that in the early 1930s, the Chamber was little more than an office to establish prices for cotton and other produce. A new era dawned for the DACC in 1934 when Harry Hall, Rotary Club president, and Theodore Jackson, Kiwanis Club president, formed a joint committee from the two clubs. Two goals emerged: establish a meaningful chamber of commerce and cut the weeds consuming downtown.

The modernized Chamber of Commerce made its first home on the second floor of City Hall, now the Dothan Opera House, at 115 N. St. Andrews St. Since then, DACC has moved several times:

1919-1954 - 130 N. St. Andrews St.1954-1967 - 130 N. Oates St.1967-1989 - 300 N. Foster St.1989-2003 - 400 Honeysuckle Road

Until in 2003, when it built a 9,140 square-foot building with a state-of-the-art architectural design on West Main Street at 102 Jamestown Blvd. for its permanent home.

In 1994, the Board of Directors wanted to move to a new level and Dothan by Design came upon the horizon. Now called Grow Dothan, it’s the economic development arm of the Chamber that supports relocating and expanding industries with one-on-one assistance in securing state, regional and local incentives, workforce development, determining suitable site and building locations and providing community contacts to meet relocation and expansion needs.

Another 5-star achievement was the development of a workforce development initiative that includes a dedicated certified staff member, workforce development committee and education committee. Each works closely with area school systems, post-secondary education institutions, service agencies, state agencies and business and industry in order to identify economic development needs, and coordinate effective solutions tailored to locally identified problems.

It was in 2001 that the organization adopted its current logo and branding statement “Meeting the Challenge” and “Shaping the Future” to signify the growth experienced through the years.

Your local chamber will begin a new era as it gets ready to celebrate 100 years in April 2019. It is through your support and strength as members that as a team we have been able to accomplish all the wonderful growth and advancement through the years.

What sets us apart? You do! From helping the DACC to advance business, education, health care, real estate and relocation, retiring and more. You’ve helped to make Dothan a great place to live, work and play. Thank you!

This five-star Chamber has built a strong foundation serving as a resource and advocate for business. It strives to “shape the future” for its members and the area’s residents by building a community that will “meet the challenges” of today and tomorrow.

Past Chairmen of the Dothan Area Chamber of CommerceOver the years, the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce has seen

many dedicated and strong individuals serve as the chairman to the Board of Directors. Without the leadership and commitment of these individuals, the Chamber would not be where it is today.

Thank you for your service, past and present.

Trinity Bank Announces Retirement And Promotion

Wallace Offers Speakers Bureau To Area Organizations

The Trinity Bank Board of Directors announces the retirement of its President and CEO, H. Manning Sanders. Sanders has led Trinity Bank since 2010 and under his leadership, the bank experienced excellent growth and consistently ranked among the top banks in Alabama.

Sanders is a lifelong resident of Dothan and a graduate of Auburn University. His career has spanned over 37 years

with many years in executive management at various banks in the Dothan area. Sanders will continue to serve on the board after his retirement.

The Board of Directors also named J. Robbin Thompson as president and CEO of Trinity Bank. Thompson previously served as market president of the Enterprise market and is a current director for Trinity Bank. He joined

Trinity Bank in 2010 and has over 22 years of banking experience in southeast Alabama.

Thompson is currently serving his second term as chairman of the Enterprise Chamber of Commerce and is a past president of the Enterprise Rotary Club. He was raised in Dothan and is a graduate of Northview High School and Troy University. He and his wife Mandy have two daughters, Abby and Emma, and are members of Highpoint Church.

“Manning has done an outstanding job leading Trinity Bank over the past eight years and we are very appreciative for his accomplishments,” said Board Chairman Carey Slay. “I look forward to working with Robbin as he takes on his new position and expect great things for Trinity Bank and our community.”

For more information, contact Kelley Marler at (334) 702-2265 or email [email protected].

Wallace Community College is well known for the educational opportunities it provides to the Wiregrass area. The mission of a community college is to bring resources closer to home, and WCC instructors are reaching out to share their expertise with area civic organizations, special interest groups, church groups or high school classes. Twitchell Technical Products, a vertically integrated manufacturer of the world’s most innovative fibers, textiles and coatings, has announced its corporate rebranding with a revamped visual identity, logo and new website. The company revealed its new brand name as TTP Fabrics and Coating.

Designed to capitalize on TTP’s expertise and relevancy in the fibers, textiles and coatings market, the new website modernizes the look and feel of the company without detracting from the history and core values of the brand. Utilizing a customer-centric approach, the website provides improved functionality, a digitized stock book and accessible technical specifications to help streamline processes and better fulfill customers’ needs.

“Our new branding and website accurately embodies our efforts to reinvent TTP and reinstate its place in the industry,” said Jeff Register, CEO. “The company’s new identity not only builds upon its history of innovation

and customer service, but also its endeavors to continue to produce technologically advanced textiles and coating services.”

In order to re-energize the industry’s perception of the brand, the new identity highlights TTP’s technology, near century of experience and continued innovation while emphasizing the most important asset TTP has — its employees. Additionally, the updates focus on TTP’s ownership of their notable Textilene product line, solidifying the company as a strong technical solutions provider.

“We are committed to offering our customers premium services, which is why creating a cohesive, beautiful brand image is a strategic pivot for the future direction of TTP,” added Register.

Five Star Continues To Invest In DothanFive Star Credit Union continues its

investment in Dothan by opening two new branches in the coming months. Expected to open late in the first quarter of 2019, the new branches will be out U.S. Highway 231 South near the south Wal-Mart and the other on Murphy Mill Road near the north Wal-Mart. The completion of these new locations will bring the total number of Five Star branches to 17 across southeast Alabama and southern Georgia.

“Five Star is firmly planted in the Wiregrass,” said Bob Steensma, Five Star Credit Union president/CEO. “Our roots sprouted in Cedar Springs, Georgia, southwest Georgia and later in Dothan, Alabama. By expanding in Dothan, we want our members and potential members to know that Five Star believes in them, and we are making it even easier for our members to reach us. Five Star wants to help them succeed financially.”

The two new branches will be the most technologically-advanced branches Five Star operates. Each new location will be equipped with interactive teller machines in both the lobby and in the drive-up lanes. The ITMs will enable Five Star members the ability to withdraw cash, make deposits with cash and checks, research Five Star account balances, and make Five Star loan payments. The ITMs

will also offer on-demand live remote video assistance during business hours. The ITMs in the drive thru will have the same robust functionality as the in-branch ITMs.

“This will add a level of convenience for members so they can transact their financial business on their schedule. It’s just another way we make it easy for them.” said Steensma.

Decorating Den Interiors, North America’s leading in-home decorating service and largest home furnishings and interior design franchise company, announces that Dawn Hall has been selected to open a Dothan franchise. Hall joins nearly 300 other franchise owners throughout the U.S. and Canada.

“We are very pleased to add Dawn to our interior decorating family,” said James Bugg Jr., president and CEO of the Easton, Maryland-based company. “Her interior design degree from the University of Georgia, along with her previous experience in both residential and commercial design, coupled with having owned a retail boutique, was very attractive to us in selecting her for a franchise.”

An Amazing Story Of Love, Purpose And Strength

Author Lisa Patton ToBe Guest SpeakerAt Library’s Next

Lunch & Learn

Mark Broadway Photography had the honor of photographing the first ever donor match, which happened to be the bride Hayden Hatfield Ryals, and the recipient Skye Savren-McCormick, who happened to be the flower girl, and it all happened right here in south Alabama. This amazing story of love, purpose and strength has gone viral around the world and is still circulating.

The pair’s story began in 2016 when Ryals donated her bone marrow to Savren-McCormick, who was suffering from juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia at the age of 1. Mark Broadway Photography’s images from the wedding have been shown on every major news network, including ABC World News’ America Strong with David Muir, Inside Edition, Fox News, CNN, The Washington Post, as well as featured in several publications including Woman’s World, Alabama Living, People Magazine and The Sun.

Broadway Photography was contacted by several media outlets in countries such as Spain, Australia, India and the UK. Mark and Jeannie Broadway were told from every producer that it was such a great story, but it was the photos that really made it. When being interviewed, the one question they were asked over and

over was “What was it like photographing a wedding like this?”

The Broadway’s have been in the wedding business for over 20 years and had the same goal as they have had with all the other weddings - anticipate the emotions that show the relationships and personality of their subjects and capture them.

To read more about this miraculous story, visit www.markbroadway.com/blog. Or for more information about mark Broadway Photography, contract Jeannie Broadway at (334) 699 5684 or visit www.markbroadway.com.

Friends of the Library will hold its next Lunch & Learn event Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 11:30 a.m. at the Dothan Country Club. The program will feature author Lisa Patton as the guest speaker.

Sorority rush at Ole Miss is the setting for Patton’s new novel Rush, which debuted Aug. 8. The story gives readers an enlightening and hilarious look at this sacred Southern ritual. The book also is a social commentary on issues of race, class and inequality as Patton focuses on the domestic staff at sorority houses. Heartfelt emotion between mothers and daughters, friends and sorority sisters permeates this novel that raises thought provoking questions while it entertains. One reviewer said, “Lisa Patton’s work personifies ‘be the change’.”

Patton is a 1980 University of Alabama graduate where she was a sorority member. She grew up in Memphis and returned there after graduation to work in the radio and TV industries. It took her 14 years to get her first novel Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’easter published. This first book in the “beloved Dixie series” was inspired by Patton’s own experience as an innkeeper in Vermont. She followed with Yankee Doodle Dixie and Southern as a Second Language.

Reservations are required to attend the luncheon and the cost is $20, which includes a buffet lunch and author presentation. To make your reservation, email [email protected], or call (334) 791-2706.

Officials from Grow Dothan, city of Dothan, Southeast AlabamaWorks, Dothan Career Center, Wallace Community College and the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce recently took time to network and tour several local industries.

The visits provided everyone with the wonderful opportunity to learn more about the area’s different industries while at the same time, also helping to address any workforce needs the companies might be experiencing.

Michelin and Wallace Partner For Student WorkshopWallace Community College and Michelin Tire Manufacturing in

Dothan recently joined forces to provide the inaugural Fundamentals of Modern Maintenance Workshop for upcoming 10th through 12th-graders. The sessions, designed by Wallace faculty and Michelin trainers, introduced area students to careers in industrial systems technology and industrial maintenance. The partners gave two three-day workshops, accommodating five students in each group.

The first day of each workshop, students received industrial hydraulics and pneumatics training and lab activities from WCCD’s Steven Tice, Applied Engineering Technology program instructor. Topics included theory of fluid power systems and configuration and operation of air and hydraulic test systems. “By participating in the workshop, students received hands-on experience working with these types of systems, which are commonplace in all types of industry,” remarked Tice.

The second day of the workshop, students explored the world of work at Michelin’s Dothan factory and received electrical theory training from Tony Greene, After Cure maintenance supervisor at Michelin. The last day included a plant tour for students and their parents.

Onyx Lundy, a rising 12th-grader at Northview High School/Dothan Technology Center, discovered many unknown facts about Michelin’s process. “Learning about making tires was interesting,” he said. “I especially enjoyed learning about the circuits.”

By 2020, 65 percent of all jobs in the economy will require postsecondary education and training beyond high school, according to research by Georgetown University. Many of those jobs will require skilled labor. These positions are highly paid and made possible by an increase in manufacturing and by retiring baby boomers.

The relevance of career technical training, in particular the Applied Engineering Technology, is encouraged by Michelin. The company

supports the education of students interested in industrial systems careers by offering a Michelin Technical Scholars Program.

Enrollment in the Wallace Community College Applied Engineering Technology program is a prerequisite for students interested in applying for the Michelin Technical Scholars Program. After passing a general aptitude test and interview process, successful applicants receive full payment of tuition, books and tools by Michelin. They also become part-time employees at Michelin while completing their Associates of Applied Science degree in Applied Engineering Technology at Wallace. Upon completion of their degrees, Technical Scholars may apply for full-time employment as a Michelin maintenance reliability technician. The skills acquired in the Wallace Applied Engineering Technology program are applicable to many industrial and utility facilities nation-wide.

For additional information on Applied Engineering Technology, visit to www.wallace.edu/appliedengineering or call (334) 983-3521, ext. 2603.

WorkforceDevelopment

During the recession, starting in 2007, nationwide there was a significant decline in employment in all sectors with the exception of health care. While other sectors shed employees, healthcare employment continued to rise.

Throughout the period, healthcare employment within the Dothan Metropolitan Statistical Area did not experience the growth that occurred nationally, but it held steady and

did not suffer the declines that most other sectors experienced.Total Jobs within the MSA have not returned to 2007 levels, but

interestingly, as self-employment grew at a slower rate since 2007, it has continued in a positive trend.

State projections for our region, thru 2024, indicate that the highest growth will be in Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations,

with jobs increasing 1,230 for the period. The highest annual projected growth rate is Computer and Mathematical occupations, at 1.73 percent followed by Healthcare Support, at 1.44 percent and in Healthcare Practitioners and Technical Occupations at 1.21 percent.

Will you be graduating from high school in the spring of 2019? Do you receive your electricity from a public power utility in Alabama? If your answer to these questions are “yes,” you could be eligible to receive a scholarship from the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority and its 11 member cities/utilities. AMEA and its members will make available 44, $2,500 scholarships (four scholarships per member city) in 2019.

Since 1992, AMEA has awarded over $2 million in scholarship monies to graduating high school seniors who receive their electric service from AMEA members, including Alexander City, Dothan, Fairhope, Foley (Riviera Utilities), LaFayette, Lanett, Luverne, Opelika, Piedmont, Sylacauga and Tuskegee.

To be eligible for an AMEA scholarship, a student’s parent and/or legal guardian must receive electric service from an AMEA member utility, and the student must attend a four-year college/university, community college and/or vocational/trade school within the state of Alabama.

Applications are currently available from school counselors in these member cities, or you can go online to the AMEA website www.amea.com.

State Rep. Paul Lee (R - Dothan) announced recently that Dothan City Schools will soon receive almost $500,000 in new funding that may be used for school security enhancements, classroom technology and other critical needs. Lee had also announced earlier that same week that Houston County schools will also be awarded roughly $340,000 in funding for the same purposes and needs.

“The approximately $840,000 in new, combined funding that was secured for schools in Dothan and Houston County will go far toward ensuring our students, teachers, and administrators are secure from harm, and it will help purchase the tools, resources, and technology necessary to prepare our children for the 21st century workforce,” said Lee.

These funds may also be used to complete needed repairs and maintenance, and upgrade bus fleets to ensure safe transportation to school in the morning and back home in the afternoon.

Even before this funding was secured, both Dothan and Houston County schools experienced increased appropriations that allowed new teachers to be hired, new buses to be purchased, a generous pay raise to be awarded to educators, and additional dollars to flow directly into the classroom. Education retirees also received a one-time bonus check in order to thank them for their years of service.

“Alabama is clearly on the right track as evidenced by this significant increase in funding for technology, security and critical maintenance. As a state representative, I was proud to have played a role in securing this funding for our Wiregrass schools,” added Lee.
