AUSTRIA–ATRUSTEDPLACE OF ARBITRATION

On 9 October 2019 the conference AUSTRIA – A TRUSTED PLACE OF ARBITRATION took place at the Residence of the Austrian Ambas-

sador in Moscow. The building, originally known as the Nikolay Mindovsky House, designed and built in 1906 in the neo-classic style, served as a splendid location.

The conference was opened by the Austrian Am-bassador Johannes Eigner and the Austrian Commer-cial Counsellor Rudolf Lukavsky.

The Vice President of the Austrian Supreme Court, Matthias Neumayr, held the key note speech “The Su-preme Court - Guardian of Arbitration in Austria”.

Matthias Neumayr, who chairs the 18th special-ised panel of the Supreme Court in charge of arbitra-tions with seat in Austria, described the court’s prac-tice in proceedings on the setting aside of awards and on the challenge of arbitrators.

Johannes Hock, President of the Austrian Arbitra-tion Association, gave an overview over the “Austrian Arbitration Landscape” followed by a presentation of Alice Fremuth-Wolf, Secretary General of VIAC, on the proceedings under the Vienna Rules. Alice Fre-

muth-Wolf also discussed VIAC’s newly obtained li-cense as Permanent Arbitration Institution in Russia.

Gerold Zeiler, one of the two Austrian members of the ICC Court, explained proceedings with seat in Austria conducted under the ICC Rules.

Marko Szucsich, attorney and arbitrator in Vien-na, gave a short insight into Austrian substantive law in the Russian language.

Finally, Anne-Karin Grill, attorney and arbi-trator in Vienna, together with Alisa Mitiaeva, Head of the International Contracts Center at Severstal, pre-sented to the audience their experience in a common case with VIAC hybrid-proceedings (Arb-Med-Arb).

The presentations were followed by a lively dis-cussion during which the audience showed particu-lar interest in the practice of the Austrian Supreme Court and VIAC’s newly obtained license.

Among the guests were in-house counsel from numerous Russian enterprises, lawyers of Russian and international law firms, representatives of the Minis-try of Justice and of Russian arbitration institutions.

The conference concluded with drinks and an Austrian buffet. The last guests left shortly before midnight.
