• The CSEP PSP has the highest standards in the Canadian industry for fitness professionals


CSEP Professional Standards Program Objectives

1. To establish voluntary standards of competence for personnel and centres on a national scale, and to encourage those currently working in the field or anticipating entering the field to comply with these standards.

2. To provide consumer protection by educating the public to recognize the distinction in qualifications between levels in the model.

CSEP Certified Personal Trainer®

• Scope of Practice» A CSEP-CPT works with apparently healthy individuals or those with a

stable health condition between the ages of 15 - 69 years who are able to exercise independently.

» CSEP-CPTs use the tools and strategies outlined in the CSEP-PATH manual to:

- Conduct pre-participation health screening assessments- Conduct submaximal aerobic and musculoskeletal fitness and body

composition- Design, implement, and monitor client-tailored exercise programs



• Pre-requisites» Academic Requirements

- 2-years of full time study or 60 credits at the post-secondary level» Additional Prerequisites

- CPR and First Aid» Core Competencies

- There are six (6) core competency areas, covered through academic courses at the post-secondary level.

CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist®

• Advanced certification» CSEP-CEPs can administer any assessment protocol available, health,

performance and job related, as well as submax and maximum testing. » Their CSEP-CEP coupled with their University degree, training and

experience will provide enable them to work along side other allied health professionals.

• Scope of Practice» The CSEP-CEP Scope of Practice has 11 points and sanctions the certified

member to work with general populations, high performance athletes, and those with chronic health conditions, functional limitations or disabilities across the lifespan.



• Pre-requisites» Academic Requirements

- Graduation from an undergraduate degree with at least 120 credits at the post-secondary level.

» Additional Prerequisites- CPR and First Aid- Practical Experience

» Core Competencies- There are 10 core competency areas, covered through academic courses

at the post-secondary level or through several alternative pathways.

Maintaining your Certification

• Renew your CSEP Membership by March 31, each year• CPR
