“We are inviting people to meet members of our Come Eat Together team and have a taster of ac-tivities we are offering.“There will be a chance to tell us what activities you might like the project to deliver in Ferryhill.“It is important that local people are involved in the development of our ac-tivities and we would love to get your opinions on the activities you would like to see in the Ferryhill area. “This is your chance to see what’s on offer and have your say. Activities include tasting, growing, dining and shopping together.”The roadshow takes place on Monday 4th September from 10am to 12 noon at Dean Bank and Ferryhill Literary Institute, St Cuth-bert’s Terrace, Ferryhill. For more information or to book a place, contact the Come Eat Together team on 0191 374 6577 or by emailing cet@ageuk countydurham.org.uk. Ferryhill Town Councillor, David Farry has become embroiled in a new contro-versy just days after being cleared of breaching the council’s code of conduct by attacking the town’s Clerk on social media. Now Durham County Council are investigat-ing a complaint that Cllr Farry has signed motions on behalf of fellow Town Councillor, Laura Davies.Cllr Davies denied Cllr Farry’s assertion that a ‘verbal agreement’ existed between the pair that he could sign motions on her behalf: “I was on my honeymoon when I saw a post that Cllr Farry had commented on regarding the taxi rank in Ferryhill,” she said. “When I looked at it I saw a photograph of a
motion that had my signa-ture on.“You could clearly see that it was my forged signature, it was not just my name or my initials.“It then came to light that other motions had been signed on my behalf.”Cllr Farry said: “I’m very disappointed that a com-plaint has been made.“I’m not going to say I didn’t sign them, because I did, but only one of them made it to the town council’s agenda and it was withdrawn by Cllr Davies before it was discussed.”Helen Lynch, Durham County Council’s head of legal and democratic services confirmed that a complaint had been received and was currently being evaluated.
Councillor in new ‘forgery’ controversy
The Come Eat Together project’s roadshow will visit Ferryhill in early September to demonstrate what it has to offer and to gauge local opinion.

Andy Denholm said he was overwhelmed by the support his idea received.
Veteran’s poppy commemoration recieves worldwide support
Following the successful ‘Angel Bomb’ earlier this year, a seed was sown in the imagination of an army veteran from West Cornforth, with an idea which has now grown into a worldwide community appeal. Andy Denholm hoped to gather 6,353 hand crafted poppies to represent the men and boys who died in the First World War. That number was later revised after he contacted the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to a daunting 7,117.The request for poppies was posted on social media sites and word spread across the world from Aus-tralia to Canada. Knitters and crafters from Holy Trinity Church West Cornforth, St Luke’s Ferry-hill and people from across the UK started to submit bags full of poppies and soon the target of 7,117 poppies was met. Mr Denholm said: “I’m overwhelmed by the support this idea has received. So many people have helped. “It is great to know that we have a poppy for each man and boy from the county killed in World War I, not forgetting other County Durham men who served, returned home to their families, only to die later from the effects of ill
health, injury or gassing.“Our poppies vary in size and shades of red which symbolises the individual soldiers they represent.“Our dedicated team have also remembered the animals killed on the bat-tlefield by making purple poppies in their honour.”The response to the appeal far exceeded the original target and Mr Denholm dared to hope that perhaps the team could achieve the impossible by honouring even more men: 19,240 being the number of British soldiers killed on July 1st 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, and the new target was set. The poppies kept flooding in and the impossible was certainly achieved, with 19,240 poppies being made.Teams of poppy volunteers have worked tirelessly over the last three weekends to complete the daunting task of attaching the poppies to the commemorative ‘field of green’, with this phase
of the poppy appeal nearly completed. Mr Denholm added: “The hard work is nearly com-pleted, but there are still a few surprises yet to be revealed and work contin-ues.”Just before the final reveal of the poppy nets, everyone is invited to see them and to enjoy Crafty Church and a special Poppy Picnic on Sunday August 27th from 2.30pm-5pm in the Cornforth Parish Church Hall. There will be opportunities to take photos, help with finishing touches, crafts for children and a poppy trail in the garden (weather permitting) and a bring and share picnic. Mr Denholm’s hopes and dreams will soon be realised when the final phase of this project begins, with the poppy nets being erected onto the scaffolding and displayed from the Church Hall in West Cornforth in time for Armistice Day.

Speed cam vans will be out in force all week.
Speeders targeted in week-long campaignSpeeding drivers are being targeted as part of a week-long campaign across Cleveland and Durham. The initiative, aimed at getting motorists to reduce their speed, will see officers from the Forces’ joint operations unit working in both marked and unmarked cars to target law-flouting motorists. The Europe-wide campaign, coordinated by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL), began on Monday 21st August, and police will be carrying out additional education and enforcement activity across both force areas. Chief Inspector Graham Milne, from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit (CDSOU), said: “Driving at 35mph as opposed to 30mph can mean that a vehicle can take a further six metres to come to a stop. “Speed limits are put in place for a reason and travelling at even just a few miles over the limit can be deadly.” In the last 12 months, a total of 20,823 speeding offences were detected in Cleveland and Durham. C/Insp Milne continued: “That is thousands of lives potentially put at risk because of inconsiderate drivers. “It is heart-breaking to see the devastation caused when our officers have to deliver the news to someone that their loved one has been killed or se-riously injured as a result of a collision. “It is our job to reduce the risk of people being fatally or seriously injured on our roads, and that is why these campaigns are so crucial.”This operation follows on
from the earlier TISPOL speed campaign in April this year, when in just seven days, 557 drivers were found to be breaking the speed limits across the two force areas. The total consisted of 257 recorded by officers out on patrol and 300 caught on equipment used by the unit’s safety camera vans.C/Insp Milne said: “As we’re in the summer holidays, children will be out playing which makes it even more pertinent that people keep a close eye on their speed and stick to the limits.“The faster you are trav-elling, the less time you have to react to the unex-pected.“Around two thirds of these collisions take place on roads with a speed limit of 30mph or less, which are often residen-tial areas where children live.
“Those travelling above the speed limit will face the consequences.”Speeding currently carries a minimum penalty of £100 fine and three penalty points added to your licence. Drivers face disqualification should they build up 12 or more penalty points within a three-year period. Durham Constabulary Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner, Ron Hogg, said: “This really demon-strates that Durham Con-stabulary is serious about apprehending speeding drivers who are putting our communities at risk. “Improving road safety is one of the objectives in my Police, Crime and Victims’ Plan. By working together with local com-munities and partners on initiatives such as Com-munity Speed-watch, we can make our roads a safer place.”

After a flying start in their opening match, life in the Premier Division of the Durham and District Sunday League is proving a trickier test than recent seasons for Ferryhill Celtic, who failed to collect any points in their two matches last week.First up for Celtic was the visit of Sedgefield St Edmunds FC who inflicted a first defeat of the season on ten-man Celtic who had Shane Todd sent off for two bookable offences. Goals from Simon Ord and
substitute, Kieron Parnaby clinched the points for the visitors. On Sunday, a short trip for a local derby against Chilton WMC began in unusual fashion after the teams were forced to wait an additional 40 minutes for the delayed arrival of the referee. After a goalless first half it was the hosts who broke the deadlock just after the hour through Kieran McWaters. But Celtic fought back and found themselves on level
