assignments, in-class worksheets. Revised and updated for subsequent incarnations of the course.

b) Teaching Methods

The following techniques have been used in class and seminar, and are on record with Brock's Instructional Development Office. 1) Student peer evaluation techniques for seminar and classroom activities (often involves assigning students

formal seminar leadership or synthesis / discussion leadership roles with prescribed duties).2) Nontraditional assignments. Examples include:

i. Environmental news reporting exercises in seminar (ENVP/UEST 1F90, UEST 2F97)ii. Oral book reports in seminar (UEST 2F97)iii. Self-guided field trips (ENVP/UEST 1F90, 1P90, 1P91, UEST 2F97)iv. Computer simulation exercises: deer population modelling (UEST 3P55), river conservation

exercise (UEST 3P53), RAPID II human impacts simulation model (UEST 2F97)v. "Public Service" assignments (with direct or indirect public involvement):

e.g.- Involvement at information booths as public information resource persons, for credit (UEST 3P43)

economically, and ecologically sensible device or structure that realistically fulfills a need, and to describe its design rationale and operation OR a policy, program, or process that improves progress towards sustainability

3) Guest speakers in the classroom:i. The use of "balanced issue" guest speakers (e.g. pros and cons of nuclear energy)(UEST 2F97)ii. Coordination, student evaluation, and assignment structure in courses with large numbers of

outside lecturers (our 3V series courses consist almost entirely of outside experts from a wide range of disciplines, and coordination of these poses some significant challenges)

4) Preparation of effective library research assignments (see ENVP/UEST 1F90 Course Workbook)5) Printed instructional materials: course outlines, fill-in handouts, info sheets, puzzles, etc.6) Student preparation of HTML (web based) documents in addition to or in lieu of traditional printed

assignments (ENVP 3V23, ENVP 3V22)
