areas. The businessmen had already bought their land even though the land had beach driving and parking. Do you really think they would have walked away from what they already considered a GOOD deal? The people are the losers! You failed to remember them!
Your legacy will be the demise of the public beach as we now know it and the coming of the private beaches. I am disappointed and ashamed of you that you caved in to the BIG MONEY Special Interests instead of letting the residents vote.
One Council member stood tall and proud and kept her word to the people who elected her. BRAVA, JOYCE CUSACK!! We will remember you and your courage.
It was a sad day for Daytona Beach and for those who believed that the wishes of the people were more important than BIG MONEY. We learned who and what was important to the County Council. WE WILL REMEMBER!

Let Volusia Vote By Greg Gimbert
Hello Neighbors, First I bring you unfortunate but not surprising news. Another crop of County politicians has broken their campaign promises and voted to take more cars off the beach. In addition to the Hard Rock and Westin projects we now have an “opportunity zone” totaling two miles of beach where politicians can deliver car free beaches to whomever rolls into town with a suitcase full of money and the right flexibility to spread it around in the right places.
In September of 2014 Let Volusia Vote made the decision to include date-certain language in our charter amendment mandating a vote on any beach driving elimination occurring after July 2014. We knew this was a dicey move NOT because it is illegal as some claim--that language is totally legal-- but because it was inferring that we expected the politicians to break their campaign promises. One such politician took great offense at the wording and at the time scolded me that our charter Amendment was the equivalent of accusing everyone campaigning in 2014 of being liars. Well....yes we were and yes they are.
I know many of you are furious over this development but let me assure you we are not defenseless in this. Residents hold all the power, we only have to use it. l can show you how. Daytona Beach voters passed City Charter Amendment 4 in 2014. Hallelujah! It is now possible for Daytona Beach residents to amend our
City Charter in the same fashion as Let Volusia Vote is doing with the County.
Our first line of defense would be beach-side height limits to protect our oceanfront access, increase residential property values, and drive the high density development that is not appropriate on a barrier island to the west side of the river where it is needed so badly. To refill our city treasury recently robbed of $20 million we could join other states that charge a ticket tax on events that draw 10,000 or more and overwhelm our services. The Ocean walk has proved the necessity of banning parking garages within 5,000 feet of residential neighborhoods in order to keep the crime such structures always attract away from our homes and children.
Bringing it full circle to beach access we could charge the greater of $10 per night or 10% tax on all hotel room bookings in the no driving areas so they can share in the costs to replace the driving area access they took from residents. Guests to our area who do not stay in the hotels pay $10 per day to access the beach by car so such a proposal for hotel guests just seems fair to me.
Will our future be one of our own choosing or will we sit back and continue to have it chosen for us? Clearly there are many options on the table for the residents to defend their quality of life, their beach access, and the public treasury from pants on fire politicians who kiss our babies in November and then rob us blind in May.
