Manning Fund Scholarship nominees must be enrolled in an accredited ed-ucational institution and be sponsored by an ASIS member. If you or someone in yourfamily is attending school this year and would benefit from a noteworthyscholarship to offset the high cost of education, please consider applying forthis valuable award. Chairperson’s Message

We had a great meeting last month with Rob Fitzger-ald from the Lorenzi Group, who shared some fasci-nating information about forensic investigations. Weare looking forward to scheduling a training sessionwith Rob and his group to enable our members to increase their working knowledge.

The May meeting was the first breakfast meeting that we scheduled based onour survey results from last year. Unfortunately, the turnout was less thansatisfactory and would discourage the Board from considering other break-fast meetings. If you are still interested in the breakfast mode, and May wasjust a bad month, please let me know. We are working hard to meet the re-quests of the Chapter members and your feedback allows us to tailor themeetings to your interests.

We are excited for our Public Safety luncheon on June 7th. I’ve alwayslooked forward to this event as it truly enables us to celebrate our incredibleworking relationships with our public safety brethren.

June 14th is our annual Manning Golf Tournament at the Wayland Coun-try Club. This is not only an incredibly fun event, (who doesn’t love golfand BBQ?), but it also raises the funds for the Manning Scholarship Fund,which is given to our members and members’ families in November. The

Foreign lotteries too good

to be true

The U.S. Postal Inspection cautions that most, if not all, foreign lottery letters sent to U.S. ad-dresses through the mail are fraudulent and ille-gal. They don’t come from foreign governmentagencies or licensees. Instead, they come fromcon artists who take a victim’s money and givenothing in return.

Most lottery solicitations from U.S. addressesalso are fraudulent. Except for state-owned andoperated lotteries, U.S. law prohibits mailing

lottery material or payments to purchase any ticket, share or chance in a lottery. A first offense carries a penalty or fine, up to two years in prison, or both.

Jamaican Foreign Lottery — one of the latest scamsIn this scheme, scammers call victims in the U.S. using digital devices thatmake international telephone calls appear to be originating from within thecountry. The calls generally are made to older consumers who are persuadedto follow the caller’s instructions.

Typically, victims are told they’ve won a lottery, and in order to receive theirwinnings, they should send cash payments to pay taxes, duties, or fees.

Victims are typically asked to mail cash to an address within the U.S. Theindividual who receives this cash in the U.S. forwards it to the scammer inJamaica.

According to Boston Division Postal Inspector Bernadette Lundbohm, CPP,lottery and sweepstakes fraud cost Americans millions every year. “Whenone family member is harmed, the impact can be felt by all. Losses can bemonumental. Entire fortunes, inheritances, and retirement security can bewiped-out.”

Inspector Lundbohm recommends all consumers learn how to protectthemselves and their loved ones from this and other types of fraud by visiting the Postal Inspection Service fraud prevention website at www.deliveringtrust.com.

answers a need for

man’s best friends

For the past three years, an importantpartnership has been forged betweenman and animal. The Sterling AnimalShelter, a non-profit organization de-voted to finding homes for dogs andcats, holds their annual fundraiser inJune at the Lancaster Fairgrounds. The “Whisker Walk” as it is known, is a free, fun day for hundreds of families

and their dogs to raise funds to benefit animal shelters and rescue groupsthroughout New England.

Putting on a gathering this large, however, takes massive coordination, re-sources and donations. How does a non-profit group synchronize the enor-mous number of volunteers, scheduled events, public gathering issues, and500+ vehicles expected over the course of five hours?

When David Spector, an ASIS Boston Chapter member and weekend vol-unteer at the shelter, thought about the problem, his answer was simple. “Ithought of a good friend of mine with an open mind and an open heart,” hesaid. “I’ve known Admir (Surkovic) for years through the Boston Chapter.He’s a great person.”

In 2010, when Spector called Surkovic and asked if he could donate the useof portable radios for the day, the Radio Solutions president and ASISBoston Chapter member responded immediately. “I was happy to help theSterling Shelter,” Surkovic says. “Raising funds for animal rescue groups isreally a worthwhile cause. We were able to donate the use of some radios sothey could coordinate the event.”

Because the Norwell-based company is a full service radio communicationsprovider, they had the resources to equip the Whisker Walk with radioswhile not impacting their business of “providing turnkey solutions, radiosystem management and maintenance to business and public safety organi-zations in the US and abroad.”

So this year, as with the last two, the Whisker Walk will benefit from thegenerosity of a Boston Chapter company and big-hearted animal lover. Two paws up for Radio Solutions and their community spirit!

Held at the Lancaster Fairgrounds (Home of the Bolton Fair,) the 2012Whisker was held on Sunday, June 3rd from 11:00 AM – 3:00 pm, rain orshine. With over 50 acres for pet owners and animal lovers to walk, visit vendors, purchase supplies and other items, attendees lent their paws for the ani-mal shelters and pet rescues they love and support! De-escalation offers an alternative in

volatile situations

De-escalation holds different mean-ings to different people. To securityprofessionals, it revolves around theagitated behavior of people in our sur-roundings whether they are employ-ees, visitors, or patients in a healthcare setting. The need for securityprofessionals to keep strong emotionsfrom turning into dangerous actions

presents a challenge for all of us. Thankfully, there are many training coursesthat teach effective skills and strategies to help accomplish this task.

The most overlooked and simple starting point is to help the person to fixthe problem that got them upset in the first place. According to ZacharyHouston, MS, BCBA, Master Trainer for Safety Care, an internationallyrenowned training course that teaches de-escalation strategies, “If we allstarted our de-escalation attempts by acknowledging that a person is upsetand then asking if there was some way we could make it right, this worldwould be a much nicer place.” Sometimes, simply waiting works; othertimes, we can help suppress the problem by simply getting the person en-gaged in some alternative task or activity.

Boredom can be aided with a newspaper or magazine. We have all been thereand we have all tried it, but the truth is that walking in and telling someone,“I need you to calm down,” almost never works. Think of the last time youwere angry and someone tried that on you.

Talking is clearly preferred over restraint. If we can suppress the person’sanger or excitement, it will go a long way towards avoiding a physical con-frontation. It is critical to remember, however, that this is generally a veryslow process.

“We don’t see crisis-to-calm in two minutes like on television police dra-mas,” says Houston. “It’s a step-by-step process which can take a few min-utes to a few hours to complete.” Good de-escalation is neither flashy norgood television; correctly implemented, however, it can help avoid the moreintrusive procedures offered by moving to physical restraints or holds.
