m Tradition and creativity

The company was founded in 1949 in Hof and was a courageous step for the Etschels, being pure well drillers. However, it signified an entrance into industrial production. The compa- ny’s design engineers rapidly developed a standardized series of the EMU pumps which are today famous throughout the world. This gave rise to a group of companies which today is involved in anything to do with water. Its many

Today, the Etschel Group companies are mana- ged by the third and fourth generations of the family. From 1970 onwards, the grandchildren of the company’s founder - Dr. Walter Etschel, Hermann Etschel, Rudolf Etschel and Helmut Etschel - gradually began to take over. In 1985, Rainer Etschel entered E+ M Bohr GmbH as a representative of the fourth generation and in 1990 he became a director of Etschel & Meyer GmbH & Co. KG. His brother Gerhard, who has worked for EMU-Unterwasserpumpen GmbH since 1987, became a member of its manage- ment board in 1993.

m Pumps from Hof are exported throughout the world

EMU is one of the Group’s two supporting pillars. The company contributes 65% to the Group turnover with pumps and sewage purifi- cation equipment, selling more than 25000 pumps every year. Around 50% is exported, and 75 countries are supplied throughout the world.

EMU-Unterwasserpumpen GmbH manufac- tures at the company plant in Hof, Bavaria. Out of more than 100 production machines, 50 are the newest type of CNC machines. The largest motor supplied so far has an output of 1000 kW. Motor outputs of up to 1500 kW and 6000 Volts can be measured on the works own test rig.

A specialist in submersible and booster pumps

In EMU submersible pumps, the electrical drive and the pump section form a compact unit which is put directly into the medium being pumped. This allows them to be installed in any desired position. Waterworks-type submersible pumps are designed for long-term operation, which means that no housing parts are made of plastic or sheet steel. Individual parts are homogenous,

solid and replaceable. There are no fitted- together or welded individual parts and no connections which cannot be undone. In addi- tion, every individual pump is tested for performance and quality and is preserved for an extended storage period.

low space requirement, simple, economical installation and pipe routing are characteristic of pumping works equipped with EMU booster pumps. The pumps are supplied completely assembled and adjusted. Instead of heavy foundations, light bases are sufficient as sup- ports. EMU submersible pumps are constructed so that their operation noticeably reduces costs.

m A complete range of pumps for waste water disposal and purification

A wide range of submersible motor pumps for waste water disposal and treatment form the principal elements of the EMU sewage system concept. A complete range of pumps is available for the various applications. They carry waste

water to sewage works, clear sand traps, pump fresh water, return water and surplus sludge, circulate digested sludge and draw off floating matter. Installed in system jet aerators, they clean stormwater retaining basins or provide the necessary oxygen for activated sludge plants.

I Wet sump installation submersible motor pumps

Our air-filled motors are cooled while submerged by the surrounding liquid. In the process, the motor heat is dissipated directly via the casing. Temperature sensors protect the motor winding against overheating. In case of wet sump installation, the EMU suspension device system allows the pump to be removed and installed at any time without any problems. This means low construction costs for the pumping station. The space required is minimum and neither founda- tions nor accessible dry rooms are necessary.

m Submersible motor pumps with internal oil circulation cooling for sewage works

EMU design engineers have developed a special internal oil circulation cooling system. This means that long downtimes are possible with- out any problems, because the motors are constantly preserved. No external cooling is required and dry sump installation is possible up to an output of approximately 500 kW. In the case of wet sump installation, the water level can be lowered down to the upper edge of the impeller housing. Sewage works-type submersi- ble motor pumps with the EMU block seal are designed for high stress (high resistance to wear and corrosion), a high level of operational safety and a long service life.

The development and installation of the EMU block seal in submersible motor pumps for the disposal and cleaning of waste water made a significant contribution towards improving the service life of pumps and reducing the amount of maintenance and repair work to a minimum.

u Waste water pumps for water disposal

EMU waste water pumps carry lightly contami- nated water out of cellars and shafts, heavily contaminated and sandy water on building sites and out of tanks. TS-type waste water pumps are used for waste water with coarse admixtures. If

aggressive liquids have to be pumped, this is done by stainless steel pumps. Submersible motor pumps with a side pressure connection are simply positioned into the gulley, shaft or tank to be emptied. If this is not possible, the pump is suspended into the liquid to be pumped at a central pump discharge. Threaded connec- tions, flange connections or ‘storz’ couplings are available for connection on the pressure side. EMU drainage pumps are wear-resistant, robust and easy to handle. Only high-quality materials are used. The electrical motors is protected from the pumped liquid either by two mechanical shaft seals or, in the case of TS-type universal pumps, by the EMU block seal. Explosion-proof motors are available for the complete line.

I Environmental technology

According to the paraphrased law of the trade in the Etschel Group, ‘anything to do with water - everything from a single source,’ EMU also manufactures equipment for transporting sew- age to the sewage plant and for sewage plant equipment. This product range includes cmplete ready-to-install pump shafts, Archimedian screws, fine screens with transport presses, spiral filters, submersible mixers for circulating tank contents and the scum-breakers and system jet aerators for cleaning of storm water retaining basins and for the oxygen supply of micro- organisms in activated sludge tanks.

??Computer-supported selection programs for custom-made solutions

The analysis and calculation of the hydraulic characteristic variables form the basis for the planning of pumping stations. EMU supplies a special pipework calculation program for this purpose. The company determines all para- meters relevant to planning, such as the geodetic head, height of loss, delivery rate, flow speed, and Reynolds number. When these parameters have been obtained, the pump most suited to the pumping problem can be selected with the aid of a pump selection program.

??Tested quality

From development through to delivery to the customer, the company’s quality assurance system conforms with the internationally recog- nized standard DIN IS0 9001. This ensures that EMU fulfills international quality requirements at all levels of the company.
