My name is Tim Courtney, I am a seminarian for the Arlington diocese and I’m assigned to Saint James for this upcoming summer. Father Posey has graciously ceded his weekly bulletin space over to me, and I would like to use this first column to briefly introduce myself.

I am originally from Fairfax, and my home parish is St. Rita in Alexandria. I went to W.T. Woodson High School, and after academic detours through the United States Military Academy and Northern Virginia Community College, I graduated from the College of William and Mary in 2015. I worked for a law and policy nonprofit in Washington for two years before entering St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia last August. God willing, I will be ordained a priest in

five years (so clear your calendars!). My Confirmation saint is Joseph of Cuptertino, and I’m an avid Washington Nationals fan and collector of Nats bobbleheads.

For us seminarians, summer assignments are an opportunity not only to learn about life as a priest and the day-to-day workings of a parish but also to become part of the parish community and to encounter Jesus Christ through His people while allowing them to do the same through us. To that end, I hope to get to know as many of you all as possible. Don’t hesitate to say hello if you see me after Mass or at any parish function. You can also email me at [email protected].

I look forward to a great summer at Saint James! Please pray for me, and know that this parish community is in my prayers as well.

~Tim Courtney

2018 Design for Excellence

Re-Accreditation Report

Every five years we undergo a self-study for the re-accreditation process. This year our efforts were led by Mrs. Deirdre Prahm in conjunction with clergy, administration, faculty, and staff from both parish and school. Below are the highlights from a glowing report from the Visiting Team who were here in May. Thank you for your continued support of our School where we Ignite the World with God’s Love! GO ROCKETS!

CATHOLIC IDENTITY: Embracing the spirituality of the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and following the Gospel values, the Pastor, Principal, faculty, staff and school community live their faith in every aspect of Saint James School. The true reflection of God’s goodness is seen in the students as they grow daily in their faith. Active participation in prayer, liturgical celebrations, service projects, and the Sacraments, all demonstrate a strong commitment to their faith. Teachers and staff integrate this faith in all aspects of the school culture. The classrooms, hallways, and all areas exhibit this faith-filled environment.

GOVERNANCE & LEADERSHIP: The Pastor and Principal work together to lead the school community by providing a joyful, open, and compassionate Catholic learning environment. The Principal brings a love for children ... The students are very happy when they see her and return their love and respect. The faculty and staff are devoted to the Principal and show this by being loyal and desiring to do whatever is needed to ensure the good of the children in their care. The school has the outstanding support of the parish, not only financially, but by the collaborative approach to strategic planning and incorporating the mission statement in all areas. [C]areful and thoughtful steps have been taken to standardize the financial aspects of the school and parish. The Pastor and Principal demonstrate responsible stewardship of school resources. Saint James School is in very good hands. With the guidance of a highly competent, deeply caring and forward thinking Pastor and Principal and support of a vibrant faith-filled parish community, a bright future awaits the school. These attributes will continue to make Saint James School a viable and sustainable asset for the community.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE: [T]he dedication to academic excellence is seen throughout the campus. Wonderful student artwork decorates the walls. The Blue Ribbon award signifies the importance of academic achievement. Educators show passion for their work, which radiates to the students. The use of technology is evident throughout the building. Children continue to dedicate themselves to their work with passion and interest. Students are provided opportunities for cognitive stretches and remediation within the Saint James setting. Resource professionals offer many reading supports to ensure that students experience growth and develop stronger reading skills. Classroom teachers also provide accommodations to students. Student growth is measured through regular assessments which show that high standards are expected. While not all students may be on grade level in their performance, they are all showing growth in their knowledge. Beyond standard measurements of growth, teaching staff also look at their own instruc-tional practice. Overall, teachers demonstrate that they understand the concept of instruction, practice and measure-ment as a process of excellent instruction.

OPERATIONAL VITALITY: [The] School has presented a very thorough operational and financial plan which ensures the continued success of the school. The facility is attractive, well-maintained, and historical. Embracing the spirit of the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a welcoming and peaceful atmosphere permeates this campus. The Pastor is a firm supporter of the school and works collaboratively with the Principal, faculty, staff, and families to ensure the operational vitality of the school.

Announcing our Sister Irene Award Winners!

Several years ago the Sister Irene McConnell, IHM Award was instituted to honor a boy and a girl from each grade who have demonstrated a capacity and willingness for service; in addition they would have shown an enthusiasm for mathematics, either in overall academic achievement, or improvement over the year, or served as Safety Patrols. Sister Irene was a beloved member of our community whose sudden death in 2013 was a shock to all. A true blessing, we are happy to honor her memory in this manner and are grateful to our anonymous donor who has funded this award since its inception. Please congratulate: John Springer, Clare Corley, Peter (Rocky) Marx, Lorel Tarutani, Xavier Christian, Madeleine Corley, Gregory Chudd, Anna Nassar, Daniele Rojas-Torres, Reagan Cervenak, Joseph Erickson, Catherine Crone, Stephen Paldino, Clara Moschella, Mason Hennessy, Stella Smith, James Ewing, and Franziska Wolf.

We Appreciate our School Donors!

Thank you to all who have made a donation to our School! There is still time to make a gift before our fiscal year ends on June 30th to our Annual Appeal, Guardian Angel Scholarship, and the Clarke-Delaney Teacher Fund. Each provide important sources of revenue for our school. The Annual Appeal has helped purchase and upgrade our technology, science and computer labs. We have not yet made our $80,000 goal, but there is still time! Will you help us get there? Your gift immediately impacts the classroom experience of our students.

Donations to our scholarship fund enables us to provide a Catholic education to all who desire it. Our Clarke-Delaney Fund supports our teachers in their continuing education. Only YOU can help our Rockets Soar. Will you be that light that helps them Ignite the World with God's Love?

Volunteers Needed for Christ House Soup Kitchen to Save This Endangered Program

For over 40 years, St. James parish has provided monthly, wholesome dinners for 60-70 homeless guests at the Christ House Diocesan Soup Kitchen and Shelter in Old Towne Alexandria (131 S. West Street). Sadly, the number of volunteers has dwindled to a level that makes it difficult to sustain this program. In addition, Judy Rybak, who has singlehandedly coordinated the program for 18 years, wishes to train co-leaders as part of the parish succession plan.

We are initiating a new approach to divide up the tasks for the 2nd Wednesday of the month dinners. It is our hope that volunteers will sign up electronically for a task, via SignUpGenius, for one or more months. Many of the tasks can be completed on your own schedule and in your own kitchen.

The following monthly assignments are needed: Cooks: follow a recipe for a casserole, or make a salad, or prepare a

hot vegetable or rice side Bakers: make brownies or cookies to fill baggies Shoppers at local grocery stores: buy bananas, bread, other food items as assigned, and storage baggies Prep Driver: come to St. James parking lot from 6:00 – 6:30 pm on 2nd Tuesdays to meet cooks, bakers,

and shoppers and to transfer the food to either Heller Hall kitchen or Judy Rybak’s home Event Driver: arrive at St. James at 2:30 pm on 2nd Wednesdays to pick up food and deliver to Christ

House. Place casseroles directly into heated ovens. Kitchen Helpers (maximum of six persons): to assemble meal and serve guests at Christ House. Need to

arrive by 4:00 pm and stay until 6:30 pm. If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please call or send an email that includes your name, contact telephone number, and email to: Susan Jackson at 703-533-3482 and [email protected], or Peggy Carrington at 703-534-3206 and [email protected]. We ask that you prayerfully consider helping us with this worthwhile ministry. Thank you!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN OUR PARISH Do you want to become more involved in St. James Catholic Church? Whether you’re new to St. James Parish or a long standing member, and you have time to share your valuable talents and resources, we are looking for help! St. James has a number of ministries, projects, and activities where we need volunteers to participate or lead. If you’re interested in giving of your time or have questions about our various groups, please contact the rectory at 703-532-8815, visit our website at www.stjamescatholic.org/volunteer, or send an email to [email protected].

Gardening Enthusiasts Wanted! We have a new garden located behind the garage at our House of Ministries at 913 Park Avenue. We are looking for volunteers to serve on a joint school/church committee to manage the garden. If you are interested, please contact us at [email protected].

The priests and sisters of St. James would like to spend time with our parishioners in an informal setting to enjoy some good food, fresh air, and activities for the little ones. We will be sending out invitations throughout the summer. Due to the large number of families we have, we won’t be able to get

everyone in this summer, but we plan to continue next summer. If you would like to participate but don’t receive an invitation,

call us to pick a date that works for you. Contact the Rectory at 703-532-8815.
