Academy411 Headmaster’s Headlines 116 ISSUE May 1 2017 BiWeekly LWA News and Announcements I hope you have had an opportunity these past few weeks to read our college acceptance list for the Class of 2017. Today is the official day for students to deposit with the college they choose to attend, if they have not done so already. It is also a wonderful opportunity for us to appreciate the accomplishments of this graduating class and the support they received from our outstanding faculty. As a college preparatory school, we always strive to have our senior class accepted at the very best colleges for them. It is a highly-individualized process, under the guidance of our Director of College Guidance, Susan Lettieri, who has many years of experience in this area. Each student has their own story and their own needs. The success of the college guidance process is to find the best match for success. I am pleased that over the years our students tell us upon their return after graduation, that they are happy to be attending the colleges they selected. Having said that, it is also a fact that as a college preparatory school, the overall list of college acceptances is closely looked at by both our current families and families who might be interested in attending Lawrence Woodmere Academy. This year’s list is truly exceptional. I have selected a few to list below just to give you an idea of the amazing success of the Class of 2017. Be sure to look at the entire list. It is on our website. Here is a sample: American University, Bard College, Bates College, Binghamton University, Brandeis University, Bryn Mawr College, Carleton College, University of Chicago, Columbia University, Cornell University, Sophie Davis CUNY School of Medicine, Emory University, Johns Hopkins University, NYU, Macaulay Honors College CUNY, Mannes School of Music, UNC, University of Pennsylvania, University of Rochester, Wesleyan University. The Class of 2017 will celebrate their graduation on Thursday, June 8th at 4:30pm in Hessel Hall. I am pleased to announce that our commencement speaker this year will be Matt Zale, Woodmere Academy Class of 1970. Mr. Zale has been very active as a member of our alumni. He most recently participated in our “mock interview event” that provided about a dozen of our seniors with an opportunity to be interviewed by alumni to practice their skills. He also participated a few years ago as a member of our alumni panel at an event about entrepreneurship. Here is Mr. Zale’s bio: A 30-year retail and footwear industry veteran and successful entrepreneur, Mr. Zale first developed the Athlete’s Foot franchise in New York City and Phoenix, and went on to build additional locations with leased footwear departments in Bloomingdale’s and Foley’s Department Stores. In 1996, he changed the name to U.S. Athletics on all 36 stores, and developed a private label apparel and footwear brand under the same name. The success of the brand led Mr. Zale to sell the stores in 1991 and begin marketing the U.S. Athletics brand of footwear to national and regional footwear and sporting goods chains. In 2000, Mercury International bought the U.S. Athletics brand and Mr. Zale continued to serve as President of its newly formed division. In 2004, Mr. Zale once again tapped his entrepreneurial spirit and vision to create Fender Footwear, a shoe brand that captured the Rock ‘n Roll spirit embodied in the Fender Musical Instruments Company. After having built retail, wholesale and direct to consumer businesses, Mr. Zale decided in early 2007 to start an executive search practice specializing in senior level placements for retail, fashion and footwear companies. He began as Senior Director at Stephen Bradford Search in New York City, and soon after founded Matt Zale Associates – an executive search and consulting firm with such clients as Brown Shoe, Steve Madden, Gant, Mission Athletecare, Modell’s Sporting Goods, Rainbow Shops, Geox Footwear, Macy’s and Camper Footwear. An avid sports fan and dedicated athlete, Mr. Zale has played nearly 60 consecutive years of organized baseball or softball. His passion for sports is equaled by his love of music as a devoted Beatles’ fan who still plays his collection of guitars. Mr. Zale holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Lehigh University. I look forward to Mr. Zale’s remarks at graduation as I know he will have a truly special and unique message for our outstanding graduating class. I also very much look forward to seeing you next Monday, May 8th, at our Spring Fundraiser at the Woodmere Club. This event is our most important fundraising opportunity for the school year. I hope you have had an opportunity these past few weeks to read our college acceptance list for the Class of 2017.

He also participated

Host Family Opportunity with Lawrence Woodmere Academy and Gphomestay

www.gphomestay.com | [email protected] | 781 996 0429 | 1025 Main St Waltham MA 02451

At Gphomestay, we know that our host families are the heart of our program. When we’re recruiting families for our international students, our main concern is for them to be placed in a warm and welcoming environment. The ideal family will already have a child attending the school, making the transportation requirement a convenient experience for both the student and the host parents. Hosting an international student is a life-changing experience for host parents and host siblings. With that in mind, what better place to look for families than within the Lawrence Woodmere community!

Host Family Needs: If you’ve ever thought about opening your home to a new family member and a new culture, the time to apply is now! Our Host Recruitment Coordinator, Amber Perry, will answer any questions you have and walk you through the steps of the application process. The requirements to host are simple and convenient for Lawrence Woodmere families.

The host family will need to provide:• Transportation to and from school• A private furnished room, and • Three meals a day

Stipend:A generous stipend of $14,000 for the academic year will be provided to offset the additional costs associated with having another family member in your home.

Support:Gphomestay provides ongoing support during a student’s stay including 24/7 access to a local Support Services Coordinator, conflict resolution, respite care for family vacations and emergency situations, umbrella insurance for host families, medical insurance for all students, and monthly residential check-ins.

Next Steps:Families should please submit an inquiry at www.gphomestay.com or contact Amber Perry (Host Recruitment Coordinator) at 617-749-8474 or [email protected].
