Contemporary problems of theoretical and marine parasitology : collection of
scientific papers / Eds.: К.V. Galaktionov, А.V. Gaevskaya. – Sevastopol: Bondarenko
Publishing, 2016. – 242 p.
This book includes original papers on different contemporary problems facing marine and theoretical
parasitology. The articles, which are written by authors from various countries (Azerbaijan, Belarus, Germany, Italy,
Japan, Russia, Turkey and Vietnam), cover a range of diverse topics, including: the history of and prospects for the
development of marine parasitology, questions on theoretical and ecological parasitology, specialized and general aspects
of functional morphology, systematics, genetics, faunal and biogeographical studies on the parasites of marine,
freshwater and terrestrial animals and plants, and the theoretical studies on life cycles. Some papers are devoted to the
important, more practical aspects of the population biology of parasites, the use of parasites as biological tags for
investigating of host ecology, and also the possibility utilizing advanced genetic and mathematical methods to optimize
parasitological studies.
The book was prepared on the basis of the scientific reports presented at the VIth All-Russian Conference, with
international participation, entitled ―School for Theoretical and Marine Parasitology‖, which took place at Sevastopol,
September 5–10, 2016.
This collection of papers will be of interest to parasitologists, zoologists, ecologists, veterinarians,
those involved in the fishing industry and aquaculture, and students.
The publication is supported by Russian Foundation for Basic Research, Grant No 16-04-20519.

Being parasites with complex life cycles, trematodes play an important role in functioning of
marine ecosystems. The diversity, specificity and distribution of trematodes in the Black Sea have
been studied since the end of XXI century and a lot of data have been collected; nevertheless, most of
them are restricted to the most intensively investigated region, Crimean shelf zone (Gaevskaya,
Korniychuk, 2003). Data on Digenea diversity near Turkish coasts of the Black Sea are rather pure
(Özer et al., 2013; Tepe et al., 2014; Özturk, Özer, 2014). In the present study Digenean fauna of five
fish species off Turkish Black Sea coasts near Sinop was investigated for the first time.
Fishes were sampled in nearshore zone near Sinop coast during spring and summer period of
2014, their organs were examined for trematodes using conventional methods; infection prevalence
and mean intensity were calculated for each parasite species according to Bush et al. (1997) (Table 1).

*New record for Sinop region of the Black Sea
All the seven digenean species found are registered from typical fish hosts.
Arnola microcirrus is a trematode species strictly specific to the annular sea bream and have
been known from this host off Crimean region (Sevastopol, Karadag); Monorchis parvus area in the
Black Sea covers marine biocenoses along Crimean (Sevastopol, Karadag, Kerch) and Caucasian (off
Novorossiysk and Batumi) coasts there the sea bream is a common and abundant fish; Labridae fishes
are typical hosts for Phyllodistomum acceptum – a parasite of their excretory system, the trematode
have been known from these near-shore fishes off Sevastopol; Helicometra fasciata is one of the most
common trematodes in the Black Sea and demonstrates a very wide specificity to final hosts: maritae
144
are known here from 32 fish species, in Cystoseira biocenoses along all the Crimean coasts.
Bucephalus marinum metacercariae have been registered from Blenniidae, Gobiidae and Labride
fishes along Crimean Black Sea coasts (Sevastopol, Karadag, Odessa bay); Stephanostomum
bicoronatum mtc. have been registered also mostly from the near-shore fishes (Gobiidae, Blenniidae)
off Crimean and Caucasus coasts.
Stephanostomum cesticillum mtc. being a parasite only of the Black Sea pelagic fishes,
anchovy and scads, have been commonly reported from them in different regions of the Black Sea
(Bulgarian, Crimean, Caucasus, Anatolian coasts, Bosporus region).
So, south part of the Black Sea (near Sinop) is a new area in the Black Sea for six of seven
registered trematodes.

Впервые получены данные о фауне трематод у черноморского побережья Турции, в
районе г. Синоп. Arnola microcirrus, Monorchis parvus, Phyllodistomum acceptum, Helicometra
fasciata, Bucephalus marinum mtс. and Stephanostomum bicoronatum mtc. отмечаются в новом
регионе Черного моря; для Stephanostomum cesticillum mtc. подтверждается встречаемость у
ставрид от южных берегов Черного моря. Все 7 видов трематод регистрируются у типичных
для них рыб-хозяев.
