Plan Your Trip Today and Discover Peekskill!

PEEKSKILL IS NAMED FOR Jan Peeck, the first European known to have set foot at the spot during his sloop journeys to the region to trade with the

native Kitchawank Tribe around 1650. In the 1700s, Peekskill was the Hud-

son River passageway between New York City and Albany, allowing enterprising people to establish commercial docks, industry farm trades, and businesses before the time of the American Revolution -marking Peekskill’s distinctive style.

Peekskill was a significant Revolution-ary War military base between 1776-1778 as the command post for the Continental Army; General George Washington used the former Birdsall House on Main Street as his headquarters during that time.

The village of Peekskill was incor-porated in 1816 and later changed to the City of Peekskill in 1940.

In 1829 the plow and stove-making industries began to prosper. The Peekskill Iron Molders Union was formed in 1858. By 1895, several Peekskill Iron foundries were produc-ing and selling more than 200,000 heating and cooking stoves, becoming the village’s leading business following the Civil War.

Peekskill became a booming village and in 1833 the first bank in Westchester Coun-

ty opened in Peekskill as did the Peekskill Academy, which later became

a prestigious

military school where writer L. Frank Baum was a student.

A case can be made that the “yellow brick road” and other fanciful elements of the Wizard of Oz were inspired by some of his experiences here in Peekskill.

Also, during the mid 1800s Peekskill participated in the national Underground Railroad system that assisted refugees from Southern slavery. Spearheaded by Harriet Tubman, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church on Park Street was established in 1852. African-American property owners Hawley and Harriet Green also allowed their house at 1112 Main Street to be used as an Underground Railroad safehouse, which was a transit location for those passing through on their way to Canada.

On February 19th, 1861, Abraham Lincoln made a stop in Peekskill at the original Peekskill Train Station on his way to his inaugural speech in Washington D.C. Peekskill’s old Train Station is now home to the Lincoln Depot Museum.

Urban Renewal Program of the 1960s physically transformed much of the downtown area. The former busy commercial riverfront area was acquired by the city from the railroad,

and developed into the River -front Green Park in 1975. Today,

Riverfront Green Park is a beautiful area with walking trails along the Hudson.

Fun Facts about

PeekskillA meteorite landed in

Peekskill in 1992 landing in the trunk of an automobile.

This was only the fourth meteorite in history for which an exact orbit is known. The rock had a mass of 12.4 kg (27.3 lb) and is currently in the

Smithsonian Museum with the automobile it hit.

Franciscan Missionary Sister started Saint Mary’s girl’s school in 1872, which was the setting for the pop-ular TV show “Facts of Life.”

The New York Jets trained at the Peekskill Military Academy campus from

1963-1968

PEEKSKILL IS LOCATED ALONG THE HUDSON RIVER

in Westchester County just 40 miles north of New York City and a one-hour scenic train ride on the Hudson Line from Grand Central Terminal.

Today, Peekskill is a diverse community, with a popula-tion of around 25,000 and home to many award winning restaurants, retailers, and artists. Young professional couples and families from New York City and the boroughs have recently discovered Peekskill, drawn by relative housing prices, a reasonable commute into the city and a great mix of city and country living. Because of these great attributes, development within the city is beginning to take shape with a few major housing and retail projects within the downtown and waterfront areas of Peekskill. These projects will add a few hundred new apartments within the city’s main areas, all close to the train station.

In the 90’s the city made zoning changes to create an artists’ district downtown and nearly 200 artists live and work in Peekskill today creating an art presence within the city.

Peekskill has become a foodie center of Westchester County. There are more than a dozen restaurants, pubs and coffeehouses within Peekskill’s downtown and Waterfront areas, many having opened in the past few years. There’s also a music scene in the city–from small bands playing at local restaurants to bigger acts playing at the Paramount Hudson Valley, an historic theater with just a little over 1,000 seats located in the downtown.

If you’re looking for outside activities such as hiking, mountain biking or kayaking Peekskill has it! There are some great activities to enjoy just take our complimentary shuttle during your stay and enjoy what Peekskill has to offer.
