SUMMARY:

Co ld Eagle Mines L t d . have acqui red proper ty former ly known at the Golden Eagle and B 6 K groups and have prospected the ' n i g h grade vein* 1

of tha B & K group by open cut work and s t r i p p i n g . T h i s work has extended the known length of the v e in s t ruc tu re to some 1500 f t . and has shown widths o f v e in mate r i a l and gold and s i l v e r values which warrant f u r the r work. A l l exposures are i n p a r t i a l l y o x i d i s e d n a t e r i a l and samples are therefore not completely t rustworthy. Deepening o f cuts by a few feet should produce f resh unoxidlxed v e i n m a t e r i a l ! and an extended program of open cut work to fur ther prospect the v e i n and to determine va lues w i th some assurance Is rccormrnded. Cost of the program Is est imated to be $9000.00. I f ore grades over mining widths are confirmed by t h i s work, f u r the r exp lo ra t i on by underground work and diamond d r i l l i n g would be J u s t i f i e d .

HISTORY:

The v e i n being explored by Co ld Eagle Mines Is h igh on the s lope of K t . McQu i l l an , at the headwaters of China Creek.

P lacer gold i s reported to have been taken from China Creek as e a r l y as 1862. 3y the l s t e 1390's, prospectors s ea rch ing for the source o f t h i s gold bad found veins i n the v a l l e y belcw the v e i n now be ing exp lored , and on two other t r i b u t a r i e s of China Creek.

Two unsuccess fu l attempts (1898 & 1936) were made to operate a sma l l m i l l on one o f these proper t ies on M ine ra l Creek. Some ore was shipped from a property on McQui l lan Creek In 1939. Extens ive underground work was done on the o l d Golden Eagle property l a the v a l l e y below the present workings, but no product ion le r epor ted .

The v e i n now being explored was probably d i scovered l a the l a t e 1930'e. Dr . Stevenson o f the B .C . Dept. o f Mines examined i t In 1941 and reports T h e v e l a has been exposed for 130 f t . A sample across 5 Inches assayed Cold 3.84 ox. per t on , S i l v e r 3.2 ox . per t on . Toward the south the v e i n pinches toward the nor th I t goes under heavy overburden and has not been prospected. There i s some doubt as t o whether t h i s v e i n le on the B & C or Golden Eagle g round . "

P o s s i b l y t h i s doubt was a deterrent to fu r the r e x p l o r a t i o n o f tha v e l a a t that t ime. Tha present Company was formed In 1965 to acqu i re and develop the c la ims embracing t h i s ve l a * Th i s Company, and tha p r i n c i p a l s o f the Company have, l a 1964 and 1965, c leaned up and re-sampled the o l d exposures on the v e i n , have made new exposures extending t h i s s e c t i o n soma 50 ttm further n o r t h , have exposed and sampled a l eng th o f v e i n some 600 to 700 f t . north of t h i s o r i g i n a l s e c t i o n , and i n a few p laces i n between to i n d i c a t e c o n t i n u i t y , and have exposed a d i sp l aced s e c t i o n o f t h i s v e i n , o r another v e l a seme 400 f t . s t t l l fu r ther n o r t h .

LOCATION AND ACCESS:

The property Is located oa the eas te rn e lope o f Mt. McQu i l l an , at the headwaters of China Creek, approximately 14 mi les S . E . of Port A l b c m i .

The p r i n c i p a l v e in outcrops at an e l e v a t i o n o f about 4500 on the steep upper s lope of the mountain. Roads have been b u i l t t o w i t h i n a few mi les o f the property i n v a l l e y s to the no r th and sou th . The ascent from the head o f e i t h e r of these v a l l e y s to the saddle below the workings i s very steep and the cost of a road to serve the e a r l y stages o f e xp l o r a t i on wou be p r o h i b i t i v e . A b r i e f a e r i a l reeonnaisanee i n d i c a t e s tha t a c a t - r o a d from the v a l l e y to the south would be p r a c t i c a l to serve a l a t e r stage o f development o f the prospect .

The w r i t e r has not determined whether the v e i n i s on the west s ide of tha o l d Crcvn Granted Claims or on the adjacent c la ims h e l d by l o c a t i o n . The accompanying c l a im map has been s u p p l i e d by the Company.

GEOLOGY:

The rock In, and i n the v i c i n i t y of the cu t s Is a f ine grained dark green andes i t e , which has been mapped by Stevenson (B .C . Dept. o f Mine* , 1941) as the China Creek andes i te . Higher op on the mountain the v o l c e n i c s c o n t a i n beds or leases of chert which s t r i k e n o r t h e r l y and dip to the v e s t .

About 1/4 mi le to the west, Stevenson 's mapping shows a no r the r ly t r end ing body of d l o r i t e approximately 1/2 mi le wide and soma 5 mi les long. I t Is probable that the hydrothermal s o l u t i o n * g i v i n g tha v e l a deposi ts o r i g i n a t e d l a the same deep seated source as d i d t h i s I n t r u s i v e .

The v e in sheav Is a we l l de f ined , s t r ong s t r u c t u r e g e n e r a l l y c on t a in ing sheared andesite and a quarts v e in e x h i b i t i n g a bended s t ruc tu re . The quarts conta ins varying amounts of g l ena , p y r i t e , and minor c h a l c o p y r i t e . Free go ld has been reported i n the v e l a .

l a the more nor the r ly exposures there are g e n e r a l l y two v e l a shears and ve ins separated by from a few Inches t o four f eet o f ande s i t e . Where tha ve in s are c lose together the andes i te may be b leached and a l t e r e d and conta in f ine grained p y r l t e . The wider s e c t i on s are r e l a t i v e l y u n a l t e r e d . Cross f ractures pass from one shear to tha o ther and shor t branches extend from the main breaks to p inch out l a the w a l l s . Separata quarts ve ins f r o a 1 to 20 Inches l a width are u s u a l l y found In each o f tha shears w i th a few Inches to a foot o f sheared andes i te accompanying tha v e l a . Sampling has Indicated that tha Intermediate andes i te does not c a r r y gold va luca and that the sheared andesite c a r r i e s a t best on l y minor v a lue s . Tha sampling showed no conc lus ive r e l a t i o n s h i p between go ld content and tha amount o f s u l f i d e l a the v e i n s . Any such r e l a t i o n s h i p should show whaa f resher v a l a m a t e r i a l Is sampled.

Ho g e o l o g i c a l features were recognized that should l i m i t the pers i s tence o f the shear or v e i n i n length or depth. The rock on the mountain s ide below the v e i n outcrop were not examined.

SAMPLING & VALUES:

Twenty-one samples were cut during the examinat ion . Eighteen samples c o n t a i n i n g v e in m a t e r i a l (and gene ra l l y adjacent sheared andesite ) ranged from .04 to 1.30 o r . per ton i n go ld . Three samples o f i n t e r - v e i n andesite o r sheared andesite ranged from trace to .04 ox. per ton of go ld . S i l v e r va lues approximately equa l l ed the go ld content . Ho attempt was made to re-sampla the south end s e c t i o n of tha v e i n which has been sampled i n some d e t a i l by o the r s , and samples cut i n other parte of tha v e i n were not c l o s e l y enough spaced to give s r epresentat ive average grade. A l l assays of samples taken, and some averages of p rev ious sampl ing by others are shown on the attached p l ana .

The cuts on the v e in have been w e l l dug and c leaned out , , which f a c i l i t a t e d the examination and sampling. The cuts do not penetrate the rone of sur face weathering and ox ida t i on , a l though i n most, some fresh su l f i d e s were present i ^ the v e i n . The e f f ec t o f weather ing and ox idat ion on gold values Is not pred icted as the nature and a s s o c i a t i o n of gold i n the ve in has not been determined.

The samples taken do ind ica te that the v e in c a r r i e s i n t e r e s t i n g amounts o f gold over the considerab le length that I t has been prospected. Deeper cuts w i l l be necessary to determine the grade w i th any degree of assurance, and t h i s need be done before the Company Is j u s t i f i e d In making the large expenditures on access road, underground development, and diamond d r i l l i n g , which would be required i f ore grades over mining Widths and stopping lengths can be i nd i ca t ed on the v e i n .

A rough estimate o f probable costs and ope ra t ing cond i t i ons suggests a minimum or c u t - o f f grade for a w e l l managed, sma l l tonnage mining and m i l l i n g operat ion on the property would be 0.8 ox. go ld per ton over a 2 f t w idth , and to achieve a p r o f i t commensurate w i t h the r i s k s invo lved , a gradw o f 1 ox. per ton over a 2 f t . width could be cons idered a minimum o b j e c t i v e .

Two sets o f samples hare been cut by o r for tha Company on tha w a l l m ine ra l i z ed s e c t i o n a t tha southern part o f the v e i n . One se t o f aaven samples over a 100 f t . length averaged 1.57 ox. per ton over 15.4 inches i n w idth , which Is 1.01 os . per ton over a 2 foot w id th . Another sat o f fourteen samples over the same 100 f t . , cut by a d i f f e r e n t sampler averaged 1.13 os . par ton over 10.4 Inches, which Is 0.48 os . per ton over a 2 f t . w id th . T h i s v s r l a t l o a from ore grade to an uncommercial grade In separate sampling po ints up tha need for heavy sampling In unox ld l sed v e l a m a t e r i a l .

CONCLUSIONS

The v e i n d i sp l ays good c o n t i n u i t y , w idths , and pe r s i s t ence o f gold va lues , and deserves a more extens ive program of e x p l o r a t i o n .

Sampling to date l a the shal low cuts has g iven aoac good gold va lues . However, fo r assurance of grades, i t w i l l be necessary t o sample below the surface weathering e f f e c t s .

Fresh v e i n m a t e r i a l can probably be exposed by b l a s t i n g a very few feet i n t o tha v e i n . The shal low overburden and steep s l d e h l l i cake I t p r a c t i c a l to expose the v e i n to t h i s depth In open c u t s .

The 500 feet a long tha p r o j e c t i o n o f the v e i n between the north and south s t r i pp ings i s prime prospect ing ground. T h i s and some fu r ther extension to the north can be tested by open c u t s . The work can be done without the heavy expense o f b u i l d i n g an access road to the p roper ty , as only hand too ls and a gaso l ine d r i l l are r equ i r ed .

RECOMMENDATIONS:

1. The v e i n between the no r th and south s t r i p p i n g be t renched , i n i t i a l l y at I n t e r va l s o f not more than 75 f t . , and where widths add values warrant , a d d i t i o n a l trenches be cut at 12V f t . cent res , and that these be cut i n t o f r e sh v e i n m a t e r i a l , a minimum of 4 f t . i n t o bedrock.

2. Cuts i n t o f r e sh v e i n m a t e r i a l be b l a s t e d i n t o the p r e s en t l y exposed v e i n s e c t i on s a t 12% f t . i n t e r v a l s .

4. Some prospect cuts be made on the extens ion o f the v e i n north of the t a lu s s l ope , and on the p a r a l l e l v e in shoving at a h igher e l e v a t i o n .

5. The route for a ca t road to the proper ty be i n v e s t i g a t e d on foot for f e a s i b i l i t y .

6. A bulk sample of r ep re senta t i ve ore be taken for m e t a l l u r g i c a l t e s t s .

7. Upon completion of the work, the r e s u l t s be examined to determine whether ore grade va lues over mining width and s top lng lengths occur on the v e i n , and that the d e c i s i o n to proceed to underground development work be made on these r e s u l t s .

Thewri ter did not take any samples of t he vein-matter, but assays up to 5103 per ton in gojd from well mineralized materia! have been reported (Annual Report, Minister of^tines, Br i t i sh Columbia, 1391, page 773).

The workings consist of one long exploratory crosscut, and four short drifts on the vein. \ . y

The crosscut, elevation 2,270 feet, was driven south-westerly for 2,100 feet and is in fine-grained andesite\throughout its length. A t 130 feet from the portal a cross-working was driven GO fee^ south-easterly, and at 1,000 feet from the portal a cross-working was driven north-westerly for 85 feet. These workings intersect a few small stringers of unmineralized quart? but do not cut any material that resembles the main vein of the upper adits, in atti tudVor vein-matter. /

Four short drifts have been driven on the morn vein. No. X drift, elevation 2,075 feet, I>200 feefup-stream southerly from the cross­

cut adit, has been driven south 30 degrcesN^e^for 45 feet on the vein which is 5 feet wide at the portal and 3 feet wide at the

No. 2 drift, elevation 2,790 feet and/70 fee\south-wester!y from No. 1, has been driven south-westerly for 65 feet on/the vein. The vein-matter consists of 2 feet of ribbon-quartz that contains a, small amount of sulpm^les.

No. 3 adit, elevation 2,870^feet and 60 feet southwesterly from No. 2. has been driven 46 feet south-westerhr on the vein. The vein is Ti feet wide at the portal, narrows to 2V4 feet half-w^ry in and, 10 feet back from the faxe, it splits, one branch, 3 inches wide, going southwesterly to the face, and the other bnthcji, 1 foot wide, going westerly into the waj

No. 4 adit, elevation 2.990 feet and 200 feet south-westerly from N No. 3. has been driven 22 feet at south 42 degrees west and 15 feet at north GO degreesovest to the face. A t 15^feet from the face a working has been driven 12 feet south-westerly. At the portal,the vein consists of a 2-foot shear-zone with a few stringers of quartz, but both the-^hear and vein-matter narrow to a single unmineralized shear 12 feet fron\the portal: ^

T h i 3 group consists of the B. and K. Nos. 1 to 6, staked in 1933, the B . a n d K . Panorama No. 1 staked in 1939, and the / am Alone staked in 1940,

belonging to the estate of Angus Beaton (deceased). The K.C. Nos. i to 4, and B.C. S'os. t and S mineral claims, staked in 1940 and

owned by Ed . Keisig, of Alberni, are adjacent on the south to the B. and K. group and have been prospected in conjunction with that group.

These claims have not been surveyed and their exact position relative to the adjacent Golden Eagle group is not known. Some of the showings described in this report may therefore be on Golden Eagle ground, which see.

These claims are on the divide between China Creek and the East Fork of the Ni t ina t River, and extend from Summit Lake, the source of China Creek, southerly for several thousand feet along the eastern slopes of the ridge between the West and East Forks of the Nitinat River.

Wi th the exception of a small amount of relatively flnt ground around Summit Lake, the slopes are ateep and consist mainly of rock bluffs and intervening grassy areas with clumps of small evergreens.

No production has been reported from the property. The camp cabin and showings at Summit Lake are reached from the Golden Eagle

cabin by a climb of 1,500 feet along a steep and narrow foot-trnil 1% miles long. The workings on the hillside above the lake are reached by poorly-defined foot-trails.

The showings consist of many widely scattered, narrow quartz veins in tufTs and basalt. The veins range from a knife-edge to 8 inches in width and consist mainly of qunrtz with small amounts of pyrite. The richest vein found consists of quartz wi th abundant banded sulphides.

At the north end of Summit Lake three small veins have been prospected by trenches and strippings. The widest of these is exposed in a cross-trench 130 feet north-easterly from the cabin and in a small pit 40 feet northerly from the trench. This vein consists of a shear-2one with a maximum width of 8 feet, which contains three quartz stringers ranging from 1 inch to 8 inches in width. The quartz does not carry any easily recognizable amount of sulphides. The shear-zone strikes northerly along the contact of purple, amygdaloidal lava on the west and l ight green tuffs and black chert on the west.

A group of three open-cuts, beginning at a point 175 feet northerly from the cabin and extending 70 feet farther north, expose a leached q u a r t 2 vein from 2 to 8 inches thick, strike north-westerly and dip 20 degrees south-westward.

At the south end of the lake, between 400 and 500 feet southerly from the cabin, a group of veins has been exposed by trenching.

One vein, strike north 10 to 20 degrees west and vertical, has been exposed by four trenches over a length of 100 feet. This vein is 8 inches wide and consists mainly of quartz with very little pyrite.

Another vein, 20 feet easterly from the first, has been exposed by two open-cuts in n length of GO feet. This vein, strike north 30 degrees east and vertical, is only 2 inches wide and consists mainly of quartz.

A quartz vein, strike north 25 degrees east and vertical, and 2 to 8 inches wide, is exposed in the bed of a northerly flowing creek where the creek flows past the north end of the workings. Two samples from this vein assayed: Gold, 2.5G oz. and 2.2G oz. per ton respectively. Fifteen feet farther up-stream a 6-foot 2one of quartz stringers is exposed. These stringers strike north-easterly and range from 1 to 5 inches in width.

Two small stringers of quartz have been found 400 and 520 feet farther up-stream. The rocks in the workings at the south end of the lake are l ight greenish tuff

with small areas of dense, black chert, all of which strike north-westerly and are vertical. Close to the veins the tuffs are strongly carbonatized by ankeritic carbonate and weather a buff colour. .

A quartz-sulphide vein, known as the "high-grade vein," is exposed 34 rnile south¬westerly from Summit Lake, at an elevation of 4,500 feet and wi th in 200 feet of the top of the ridge. There is some doubt as to whether this vein is on the B. and Jv.-K.C. ground or Golden Eagle ground. The vein, strike north 4 degrees west and dip 65 degrees westward, has been exposed by five open-cuts for a length of 130 feet. The vein, 5 to 8 inches wide, consists of both ribbon- And comb-quartz and abundant sul­phides. A sample across 5 inches of this vein-matter near the north end of the vein assayed: Cold, 8.84 02, per ton; silver, 3.2 oz. per ton; copper 0.06 per cent. Towards ^ the south the vein pinches to a shear and towards the north it goes under heavy over­burden and has not been prospected. The wall-rock is dark green andesite.

A s tr iking feature of the rocks on the hillside is a northerly t rending zone of strongly carbonatized andesite that ranges from 6 to 25 feet in width. Because of the

- iron in the carbonate, the rock in the zone of alteration weathers a strong buff colour. Near the south end of this zone, about % mile south of the " high-grade vein," two

open-cuts at elevations 3,340 and 2,270 feet in the bed of a creek have been driven on n small amount of pyrite, galena, and sphalerite contained in narrow veinlets in the carbonatized rock.

with galena and pyrite, were found in the shears; a sample across the east shear of such material assayed: Gold, 0.82 oz. per ton; silver, 0.7 oz. per ton.

There are no previous published descriptions of the 3. and K. group and adjacent claims.

The property was examined by the writer in September, 1941. This company, in the name of Herbert F . Hewitt , liquidator, holds the

H a v i l i t i G o l d Storm Sos. 1 to i mineral claims under the " Free Miners* Exemption M l « e « , L t d . Act ." These claims are at the head of McQuillan Creek arid are \ reported to include the ground mined by the company during the period

of its Operations between 1936 and 1040. / The vworkings are reached by motor-road from Port Alberni up China Creek for

milesvto the mouth of McQuitlan Creek; thence for 2Vz miles tp a base camp, elevation 2,4V0 feet, at the head of the creek. From the base camp a pack-horse t ra i l , % mile long, leads to the mine camp, elevation 3,400 feet. Dur ing the period ci active mining the company operated a high-line tram for ore and supplies between the base camp and the mine camp. /

The main workings are on the Gillespie vein between elevations of 3,400 and 3,611 feet on the west sideband near the mouth, of a northerly-trending cirque. The upper workings, not so extensive as the lower, are on the Albern i and McQuil lan veins between elevations of 4,200 and 4,370 feet and are 1,700 feet southerly by t ra i l up the cirque from the lowest adit on the Gillespie vein. The workings on the Alberni and McQuillan veins and on a vein on the easterly side of the cirque have been described by the writer in the Annual Report, Minister of Mines, B .C. , 1936, pages F 32-33. As very little work has been done siqce that time on the Alberni and McQuillan veins the reader is referred to the 1936 report.

Although the McQuillan vein was prospected by an open-cut and short adit as early as 1895, most of the work on the \e in was done between 1936 and 1940 by Havilah Gold Mines, Limited. The work on the'upper showings was done in 1936 and most of that on the lower showings—namely, theXdriving of the three drift-adits—was done in 1938 and 1939. • / \

Production from the property has been as\follows: In 1936, 7 tons containing 7 oz. of gold and 6 oz. of silver; in 1939; 1,039 tons "containing 244 oz. of gold and 1,323 oz. of silver. / \

The hillside in the vicinitv of all the workings >e very steep. The lower slopes are covered with scrub fir and snow-brush and the upper slopes with heather and large talus boulders. /

The Gillespie, vein strikes north 8 degrees east andVdips from 65 to 80 degrees eastward, but between.Nos. 1 and 3 adits it dips, on the average, 75 degrees eastward.

The vein-matter/consists of ribbon-quartz (Plate IV. , A \ and a moderate amount of sulphides. The,-quartz ribbons are separated by thin lamime. of sheared rock which ,3 commonly replaced by the sulphides. The ribboning of the quartz is made more s t r iking by the marked tendency of the vein to slab-off along thei jar t ings of sheared rock. Angular fragments of wall-rock, now largely carbon atized\and replaced by mariposite and sulphides, may be recognized in the vein in places, ^ e i n l e t s of late comb-quarts cut the ribbon-quartz in a few places. The sulphides are mainly pyrite, with small amounts of arsenopyrite, sphalerite, and galena.

Although the vein was not systematically sampled, thirteen samples were taken from different pieces along the vein in the three adits. Assays ranged from\0.02 to O.d/or. gold per ton over widths ranging from 6 to 33 inches.

The wall-rock consists of lava, of andesitic composition. It is massive, 'fine­grained, amygdaloidal in places, and mainly dark green in colour; however, pur) amygdaloidal lavs is found on the west wall of the lower adit for a distance of 500 bock from the face.
