The Mass in Slowest Motion: the Offertory, II

The offertory has three distinct parts. The priest
eprepares the bread and wine for offering, then himself, and
finally the people. Last week we reviewed the preparation
and presentation of the bread and wine on the altar.

In solemn Masses, the priest incenses the gifts and
the altar. He swings the thurible first over the bread and wine.
Then he walks around and incenses the altar, the place from
which Christ’s sacrifice ascends to the Father. Again, the
smoke of incense signifies the rising of our prayers to God
from the altar and from the offerings placed on it. In the
Extraordinary Form or Traditional Latin Mass, the priest
recites words of Psalm 141 while incensing the offerings:
Let my prayer be incense before you.

Then the priest prepareshimself. He goes to the side
of the altar for the washing of hands. (Rest assured, he
already washed his hands before Mass; this is only a ritual
purification!) As he washes his hands, he prays another
Psalm verse,Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse
me from my sin(Ps 51:2).As is always the case in liturgy,
the words and the actions have a unity. The act of washing
his hands is a sign of the priest’s appeal for spiritual cleans-
ing.

It is a natural religious intuition that one should
cleanse himself before approaching the divine. The priests in
ancient Israel went through an intense purification ritual
before entering the sanctuary. Muslims have ritual washings
prior to prayer. And so on. The principle is this: God is the
Holy One, transcendent and beyond us. To approach Him we
must detach from the world and be cleansed from the
sinfulness of the world.

Last, the priest prepares the people:Pray, brethren
(brothers and sisters), that my sacrifice and yours may be
acceptable to God, the almighty Father. Notice an important
distinction:my sacrifice and yours, not the identical sacrifice.
The priest, acting in the Person of Christ, offers the Sacrifice
of Christ Himself under the form of bread and wine. The
faithful offer spiritual offerings in union with Christ’s.

The offertory clarifies that the Mass is an offering
and sacrifice. It should keep us from thinking primarily about
“getting something out of Mass.” Yes, we desire to derive
some benefit from Mass. But we do so only to the extent that
we invest something and make an offering.

The bread and wine placed on the altar represent
your offerings and the offering of your lives. As the priest
offers them, you shouldbe conscious of bringing your offer-
ings as well. What are your intentions? What do you need to
ask of God? What do you need to thank Him for? What sor-
row is on your heart? All of these should be, in effect, placed
on the altar at this moment, to be united with Christ’s sacri-
fice.
With that in mind, your response to the priest takes
on more significance:May the Lord accept the sacrifice at
your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good
and the good of all his holy Church.

Sister Mary Sue’s Surprise DriveThru Birthday Party
On Sunday, April 19, the students and staff of Saint James Catholic School surprised Principal,
Sister Mary Sue Carwile, IHM, with a “DriveThru Birthday Party.” From 1:00pm to 2:00pm, a
steady stream of cars drove through B Lot, with their passengers shouting Birthday greetings to
Sister. Sister later said, “What a birthday! And with social distancing in place! Thank you Saint
James Catholic School!

Saint James “PopAndGo” DriveThru Food Drive
On Saturday, April 25, Saint James hosted a “PopandGo” drivethru food drive to benefit our
First Friday Food Distribution program. Donors drove up to Blot, popped their trunks open, and
one of the drive’s volunteers would remove the bag of nonperishable food, and take into the
gymnasium, while the donor drove away. This innovative approach ensured that all involved
would be able to follow all of the government’s regulations for these challenging times.
