2. Noi crediamo ai carmi della Sibilla, che essa, si dice, pronuncio in stato di esaltazione. Si credeva poco tempo fa, per una diceria senza fondamento diffusasi tra la gente, che un interprete di tali carmi si apprestasse a dire in Senato che colui che di fatto era gia nostro re avrebbe dovuto anche ricevere il titolo regale, se volevamo esser salvi. Se questo e scritto nei libri sibillini, a quale uomo e a quale tempo si riferisce? 3. Che quel carme, poi, non sia il parto di uno spirito invasato, lo rivela sia la fattura dei versi stessi (che sono un prodotto di arte raffinata e accurata, e non di un eccitazione e di impulso), e quel tipo di composizione che si suol chiamare acrostico, nella quale, leggendo di seguito le prime lettere di ciascun verso, si mette insieme un'espressione di senso compiuto....E nei libri sibillini, l'intero carme risulta dal primo verso di ciascuna frase, mettendo di seguito le prime lettere di quella frase. Questo e il modo di procedere di uno scrittore, non di un invasato; di uno che lavora con minuta accuratezza, non di un folle. Percio teniamo ben appartata e segregata la Sibilla, in modo che, come ci e stato tramandato dai nostri antenati...
