Subject Olympic team selection

If the United States Cycling Federation is going to pre-pick the team to represent the USA at the Olympics why fool with athletes expectations and financesby conducting a series of lrials 7 Tom Prehn is the most successful racing cyclist ever to wear the jersey of the Nattonal Capital Velo ClubInc and probably the most successful cyclist to come out of the Washington DC area I r egularly use Tom as the perfect example to our Junior category racers as to how far one can go with hard work and true dedication

Now it seems that Ill have to add but if you want to make the Olympic team your years of hard work and dedication is at the mercy of the USCF Coaching staff How can I explain why Tom who won the last race of the Ol~npic Trialsfinished 7th and 11th in the others maki ng him the 5th highest points winner did not make the long team while others with no points d i d 7 instead hes an alternate Alternate to what 7

When I first heard that the coaches will select eight men and two women to join the four highest point winnere I thought to myself thats a nice little fall back if Phinney or Twigg has problems or Dad luck but I never in my wildshyest dreams thought in would be used to shaft a talented and experienced racer like Tom Prehn

Making Tom Prehn an alter nate was not a good gesture it was an insult

From Michael C Butler ~ Racing Team Director 301 588-2087 National Capital Velo Club

Date July 5 1984
