Electric Light Cricket was started in 1930 by the Hilton sub-branch of the RSA. Electric Light Cricket was created by Alf Stone (1897-1970) in 1933, when he turned an L-shaped piece of land on his Cowandilla block into an improvised cricket pitch as a means to keep youth entertained and off the streets. It is played under lights on a tennis court with 18 players a side and a tennis ball bowled underarm on a half-length pitch. Due to its popularity, especially with returned servicemen, a cement pitch soon replaced Mr Stone’s dirt one. A pitch was also laid at the Hilton RSL. This is the first recorded place where the sport was played in public in Australia. Teams were soon formed and games played between RSL clubs. The popularity spread quickly and pitches were laid in other parts of Adelaide, and the South Parklands Women’s teams were also formed.
