as our climate changes, summer droughts are becoming increasingly common. Water is no longer something we can take for granted, even in Britain. Meanwhile, global environmental issues mean that there is also a moral imperative to use water wisely. Th is book introduces the diff erent aspects of water use and water conservation in the garden, showing you both how to use less water and how to save more. Th e huge interest in natural swimming pools, which the author introduced to the uK in 2000, has convinced many owners of a conventional swimming pool to aspire to a natural one. Th is book was written in response to demand from people all over the world for more information

on the subject. it shows how easily conversion can be undertaken, and includes many inspiring examples of completed projects.

Th e book describes the numerous benefi ts of conversion before moving on to an explanation of the natural swimming pool system. Th e process of planning and designing a pool conversion is shown graphically, making it very easy to understand, and this is followed by an explanation of the actual work of conversion. projects that have been planned and designed by the author and by specialist natural swimming pool contractors demonstrate how inspiring converted pools can be, and the book is extensively and beautifully illustrated.

system is that the pool owner’s role is simply to give nature a helping hand. Much of the ‘maintenance’ occurs by itself, and much of the ‘work’ off ers the same pleasures as gardening.

some care is required, however, to keep a natural pool functioning effi ciently and looking good, and this essential handbook provides a straightforward guide to all aspects of caring for your pool. covering water quality, plants, pests, pool wildlife, infrastructure and equipment, it takes you step by step through all aspects of routine care and maintenance and explains how to tackle any problems that may arise. it concludes with a detailed maintenance programme listing the daily, weekly, seasonal and periodic checks and tasks that will ensure that your pool continues to be a delight to own and to use.

• reduce water and energy consumption, material costs and time to maintain the garden.

• reverse the destruction and loss of all the natural resources such as water, trees, plants, wildlife and topsoil.

• produce food – vegetables, fruit, nuts, herbs, fish and fowl – in harmony with nature.

• use companion planting to reduce pests and diseases and provide more vitality in a natural way.• use ‘green’ construction techniques (bioengineering) to minimise the impact on the land.• use all the principles of design such as balance, scale, proportion, harmony, etc. found in

traditional gardens, to create an art form that will delight the senses throughout the year.

Michael Littlewood is a natural landscape architect and environmental planner with extensive experience of successfully designing and implementing sustainable land use projects. His mission has been the introduction of ecological design and planning into the mainstream and is founded on years of practice in a wide variety of situations, landscapes, climates and uses of land for public and private amenities on scales ranging from the residential garden to a village or town.

His designs have incorporated his specialisms of eco-building, bio-engineering, renewable energy systems, water harvesting, waste treatments, organic food production, natural swimming pools, wildlife and nature conservation.

in his work Michael has been guided by a belief in the necessity and value of working in harmony with nature, to a philosophy and design approach rooted in the permaculture ethics of integrating earth care with people care to the increased benefit of both. He sees his concepts as a dramatic and conspicuous example of the value of ecological design, where separating and combining functions and uses makes the most of both worlds, the natural and the artificial, while at the same time creating beauty.

He has had extensive teaching experience at universities and colleges in this country and abroad. Michael started the first course in garden design in this country in 1984 at pershore college. He has also been an external examiner at Writtle college.
