1. Dynamic Infrastructure In Action Delivering real business outcomes today while investing for tomorrow
The February 9, 2009 announcement of IBM’s Dynamic Infrastructure strategy described a robust and actionable approach for companies to address current IT requirements while also expanding beyond the traditional bounds of IT into business infrastructure. This announcement has been widely acclaimed by clients, media and analysts and aspects are being actively implemented by many companies.
Over time, IBM will continue to bring to bear technologies and capabilities that IBM is uniquely capable of delivering to execute on this dynamic infrastructure strategy. New innovations and practical solutions and “next steps” will be highlighted so that clients can anticipate the steps to take. The overall Dynamic Infrastructure strategy, complete with its stated initiatives and imperatives, will form a “road map” for moving forward.

Dynamic Infrastructure in Action: Customer testimonials.
Bryant University has worked with IBM to consolidate and virtualize their server environment and deploy a modular data center.
In 2009, Bryant participated in the ITM for Energy management beta program to begin to capture energy-related metrics in their server environment to identify and address inefficiencies.
Going forward, they are looking to extend the energy management capabilities beyond IT and the walls of the data center.
“The IBM CoD solution is an absolute business necessity to address our infrastructure needs. Thanks to IBM’s help, we were able to quickly optimize our solution to run in the IBM cloud. We have observed a 15%-20% improvement in performance and improved scalability, enabling us to deliver results faster to our clients”.
Barry Stewart, CFO Ingrain Rocks
Ingrain’s mission is to provide a fast and efficient flow of detailed and accurate information about the porosity, permeability, resistivity, and elastic properties of rock samples.
Nicholas & Company is a full service food distributor with 450 employees, serving the Northeastern US. They needed to be positioned to scale dynamically in response to a growing list of products and expanding territory.
In 2008, they consolidated x86 and Power, onto BladeCenter and used virtualization to increase utilization and speed of deployment.
“No longer do we need to add a physical server per application. We’re able to use a single Blade, virtualize that into many machines, and deliver a better return on investment for that server.'

February 9 Highlights, Impact and Importance
Joe Clabby defines Dynamic Infrastructure:"What is dynamic infrastructure? Most IT professionals are familiar with some of the computing concepts behind dynamic infrastructure (DI) – including consolidation, virtualization, and provisioning. But at Pulse IBM showed how an expansive portfolio of tools, utilities, and service management applications can be used to create a cohesive, easily manageable dynamic infrastructure environment to flexibly serve user and application requests for computing and business resources.“
David Hill concludes his report on Dynamic Infrastructure:"IBM’s Dynamic Infrastructure sets a visionary framework within which its information infrastructure sits, but the company also realizes that product and service sales are driven by what it can do for customers today. And that shorter term market reality is motivated more and more by helping customers deal with the economic challenges that they face. IBM has issued a fusillade of new and enhanced information infrastructure products and services that are aimed at ensuring that customers meet those immediate, inescapable challenges.“
Forbes.com’s Andy Greenberg comments on “IBM's 'Smart' Moves”“First came the lofty pronouncements. Now, comes the products--and the timing couldn't be better. Since November, IBM Chief Executive Sam Palmisano has been making futurist statements about the need for a "smarter" national infrastructure … IBM on Monday put its chief's words into action, announcing a broad update of its products and services aimed at building those intelligent systems and dealing with the massive amounts of data they would create.”

2. Condition Infrastructure to Exploit Cloud TodayMaking cloud real today
It seems that everyone is talking about cloud computing these days, and many people may have differing views of just what it encompasses. Some see it as “something to think about in the future” while others point out that many aspects of cloud computing have actually been around for a while. Simply put, for users of cloud computing, it is a way to "consume" services while for providers it's a way of delivering services. The growth of this trend is driven by the consumer Internet experience.
In recent years, networking bandwidth has expanded to augment server and storage processing power to enable cloud computing to reach new levels of implementation and address a whole new set of business issues. The systems behind “the cloud” have taken advantage of virtualization to better utilize available resources. These advances are enabling many companies large and small to take steps toward implementing clouds for their competitive advantage.
Strategy Leverage leadership in virtualization and networking to build a solid foundation for cloud computing
Deliver a portfolio of offerings to allow companies to build, run and manage clouds
Be the leader in the marketplace on helping clients “make clouds real today”

The Importance of Networking to Cloud Computing Models and Dynamic Infrastructures
Networking is essential to dynamic infrastructures In highly virtualized infrastructures, of which clouds are an example, new demands are placed on
network characteristics, which can become a limiting factor The ability to automatically optimize virtual images and information flexibly across the network
is a necessary part of the foundation of a dynamic infrastructure Rapidly moving workloads requires flexible network performance; virtual workloads require new
levels of security; and any shortfall in networking resiliency will seriously degrade the quality of the service delivered
A more instrumented, interconnected, and intelligent world increases the importance of networking in linking those devices to businesses to drive real time intelligence
IBM has an extensive range of choices for networking offerings Network management and management software Network security and resilience expertise and technology Expert capabilities via services Multiple hardware choices that support advanced networking capabilities

Manage Risk: IBM is first to market with drive-level encryption for midrange disk, with DS5000. IBM was the first vendor
to offer drive-level disk and tape encryption.
Improve Service: IBM announces the availability unique Solid-State tooling for DB2 on z/OS, enabling improved performance
optimization. Solid-State storage for POWER® servers is now available. New Solid-State Storage Smart Data Placement benchmarks demonstrate the value of IBM Solid-State optimization, compared to published Sun and EMC benchmarks and statements.
IBM will extend Solid-State Storage leadership with Smart Data Placement capability integrated into System z, System x, and POWER® platforms. IBM researchers also identified new areas where optimized Solid-State storage solutions could soon drive breakthrough performance gains Application optimization, storage system optimization, and new forms of solid-state storage technology (SOD).
