Re-launch of Subject Guides

If you go to the QUT Library homepage and select science and technology in the subject guides section you will see a number of subject guides available for the Faculty of Science and Technology.

We are currently updating and re-launching these guides. We have completed the following new guides for the disciplines of Biogeoscience, Cell and Molecular science, Pharmacy and Medical Science.

• Anatomy and physiology • Biochemistry and clinical biochemistry • Earth sciences • Ecology and environmental science • Microbiology • Pathology and pathophysiology • Pharmacy • Proteins and Enzymes

Dr. Brendan Sinnamon has completed guides for Chemistry and Medical Radiation sciences. He is currently working on the Mathematical science and Physics guides.

These guides are designed to provide a starting point for new undergraduate/postgraduate coursework students to assist them with finding relevant resources. Researchers and research students may also find them useful.

Your feedback and suggestions are welcome. Please promote these to your students once the new teaching year starts.

Scopus announced as citation provider for Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) Initiative in 2010 The Austra l ian Resear ch Counc i l (ARC) announced late last year that Scopus would provide citation information for the full Exce l l en ce in Resear ch for Austra l ia (ERA) initiative in 2010. QUT Library now has a short-term trial of Scopus until 22 January 2010. For more about the ERA go to http://www.arc.gov.au/era/default.htm Scopus is a multidisciplinary abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web resources with smart tools to track, analyse and visualise research. In order to take advantage of personalised features in Scopus users can click on the register link on the top right hand corner of any page. It is the major competitor product to Thomson Reuters Web of Science to which QUT Library already subscribes.

There are updated daily Scopus indexes.

For additional information on the coverage of the Scopus database go to http://info.scopus.com/scopus-in-detail/facts/

To access go to the QUT Library Databases page and select Trial databases.

If you have any feedback on the usefulness of this product please let us know.

OCLC FirstSearch Databases : Change in access

The OCLC Firs tSearch databases are no longer available as a transaction based searching model but instead by subscription.

Based on usage of these databases in the past QUT Library has decided to only continue subscriptions to the Firs tSearch databases PapersFirs t and Proceed ingsFirs t .

These subscriptions are now active via username and password.

The login details are listed at https://secure.library.qut.edu.au/databases/passwords.php#2480

Proceed ingsFirs t contains citations to the published proceedings of worldwide meetings, conferences, expositions, workshops, congresses, and symposia received at The British Library Document Supply Center from October 1993 to the present.

New CASSI Search Tool Now Available The new CAS Source Index (CASSI) search tool is a web-based resource intended to support researchers and librarians to quickly and easily look up or confirm publication titles and abbreviations, as well as CODEN, ISBN, or ISSN codes.

This new tool will enable researchers to confirm journal titles and journal title abbreviations for publications indexed by Chemica l Abstrac t s Serv i c e (CAS) since 1907, including serial and non-serial scientific and technical publications.

Search by Tit l e , Abbrev ia t ion , CODEN, ISBN, or ISSN .

Trove: the new service from the National Library of Australia

The Libraries Australia free service has been switched off (since 3 December 2009) and has been replaced by Trove - one search ... a wealth of information.

Trove is a new discovery service focused on Australia, Australians, and items found in Australian collecting institutions.

Records in Trove are a copy of the records in the Australian National Bibliographic Database (including the Register of Australian Archives and Manuscripts, and Music Australia), Picture Australia, Australian Research Online, Australian Newspapers 1803-1954, PANDORA and Australia Dancing . Some external data sources will also be available.

We now have 2 database records (which both come up under a “libraries australia” search):

• Trove - this provides access to the Libraries  Australia free service

• Libraries Australia - this provides access to the Libraries Australia enhanced (subscription) service only
