Hopefully this will not be the last article in this Trestle- board as Fort Crook Lodge is being moved to the 218th district. Not by choice but in a redistricting of Lodges in the State. We will be in a District composed of Lassen Janesville #148 (Susanville), Sincerity #132 (Greenville) and Plumas Historic Lodge (Quincy) and Fort Crook #250 (Fall River Mills). The travel from Fort Crook to the other lodges are from 86 miles to 127 miles. Quite a drive. Our new Inspector, Scott Tripp, who lives in Susanville, will have a challenge in the winter months as all of these Lodges are in SNOW country. Whoo Hooo. Watch out for Ice and Deer Worshipful Scott. We will miss Worshipful Don Black as our Inspector. At the Stated Meeting for October we were finally able to present a Golden Veteran award to Brother Bob Davis of Alturas. Only 6 years late. Brother Bob’s wife had kept extremely good records of his Masonic journey and mem- bership in the Lodges he attended and belonged to. The Grand Lodge records were not kept up during the time that Secretaries sent in info prior to the i-member computer program. Due to the diligence of our Lodge Secretary and the great records Brother Bob’s wife we were able to con- vince the Grand Secretary that Brother Bob was entitled to receive the Golden Veterans award even if it was 6 years late. Sadly Brother Bob’s wife passed away this past year shortly after our Lodge Lunch in Adin and was not able to see him receive the award. Other members of his family were present. See the photos. Worshipful Don did an out- standing presentation as usual, thanks Worshipful Don. We will be putting on a First Degree on Saturday November 12th at 1:00pm and our Officers and other Lodge members are working hard to make this a Memorable Experience for our Candidate, Aaron Chrighton from Alturas. There will be a lunch following the Degree. Please plan on attend- ing and RSVP so the cooks will know how many to prepare for. RSVP to 530-335-3866. The more side liners we have the more impressive is the Degree. Remember your first experiences in the Lodge. Give our Candidate a Day he will remember for the rest of his life. Fraternally, Jim Crockett Senior Warden Bro. Bob Davis receives his Golden Veteran Award, joined by his sister, brother, and brother-in-law.

Northern Lights #14Order of the Eastern Star

Anderson, California

Well we have come to the end of another Eastern Star year and it is time for a new set of officers to take over. We have enjoyed our

year as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron and are very proud of all our Chap-ter has accomplished this year. Thanks to our members help we earned over $1000.00 for our project of the “Veterans K-9 Connection” and brought this wor-thy organization to the attention of the Eastern Star in the North state. Our sup-port of them also introduced the Eastern Star to many who did not know about our group. We were also able to have the Veterans K-9 Connection present at the Official Visit of the Worthy Grand Matron, Worthy Grand Patron and the Grand Family. This too showed nonmembers how the Order of the Eastern Star participates in local programs. We initiated one new member and affiliated two members this year. We wel-come these three sisters to our Chapter. Both of us want to take this time to thank all of the members of Northern Lights Chapter for their support and dedication to our Order. You truly made 2016 a great year for us. On Friday, November 4th Sister Carolyn Parsons and Brother Gary Grant will be installed as our Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron for 2017. The open installa-tion will begin immediately after we hold a short anteroom meeting at 7:00 pm. We hope you will come out and support our new officers as they begin their year in office. On Friday, November 18th we will have our first meeting practice with our new Deputy Grand Matron Jean Haynes. This will start at 7:00pm and all officers are expected to be present.

Thanks again,Dina WM and David WP

It appears that we have now reached the end of our Grand Year. And as we go through the month of Novem-ber we will be traveling longer distances. Molino Star, Wel-come-Redding, Northern Lights-Anderson, and Trinity Star have Installations spread from November 4th through No-vember 22. We hope that you will be able to take in a few of them. And then the surrounding Districts to the North, West and South will also be welcoming everyone. As the Worthy Matron-elect for Trinity Star I have taken over the Trestleboard articles. So First to let you all know about My (and Michael’s) Installation, I will furnish some of the details. I will also give you some brief information about some of the others. November 4th. Northern Lights with Caroline Parsons November 13th. Molino Star with Angela Stone November 17th. Trinity Star with Kathy Smith November 22nd. Welcome-Redding with Carolyn Harri-son============================================== November 5th. Camilla of Eureka November 6th. Arcata Installation November 19th. Ferndale Installation November 20th. Fortuna Installation. ============================================== We hope that you can find a few of these you can fit into your schedule. Trinity Star will not meet after our Installation until February 2nd. We have chosen to be dark during Decem-ber and January so that no-one will have to prepare to drive in nasty weather. We realize that Mother Nature can play games with us during any month and send a snow storm, rain storm, or nasty fog at any time. But summer isn’t quite as warm here as it is in the valley. Our Installation will be on a meeting night as noted above. We will serve a delicious dinner at 6:00pm. We will follow that with an anteroom meeting at 7:00pm with the Installation to follow immediately. We hope to see many of you.

Tiger kisses and Eagle feathers to you all, Kathy and Michael

Few references in Freemasonry are less understood than the two brazen pillars in the porch of King Solo-mon’s Temple. Probably a greater mass of misinfor-mation exists regarding these than any other symbol in the Craft.

Early ritualists confused the mythical pillars of stone, spoken of in almost all the Old Charges, or manuscript constitutions of the Craft, with the brazen pillars of the porch—the result is that modern Freemasons have composite pillars, fusing of the ancient and the mythi-cal pillars on which were supposed to be engraved the arts and sciences of the time before the flood, and those which Hiram Abif erected—undoubtedly with Egyptian influences and memories of Egyptian Tem-ples to guide him—before the great House of the Lord which Solomon built. Modern Masonry has hollow pil-lars to serve as safe repositories for the “archives of Masonry” and to preserve them from flood and fire, in spite of the fact that sacred history says nothing of Masonry, or the reason for the pillars being hollow.

How high were the pillars? A question which has agi-tated American Freemasonry—largely without rea-son—for many years! A majority of American rituals state that they were thirty-five cubits in height. A mi-nority hold to eighteen. One compromises on thirty. A few do not give the height at all. Many rituals set forth the fact that Hiram cast the pillars on the plains of the Jordan, in the clay ground between Succoth and Zar-than, or Zeredetha. Both 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles are authority for the statement. But if there ever existed a “clay ground” in the location specified, it has disap-peared and left no trace. Explorations (Lynch in 1847, Ridegway in 1874) not only found no clay ground, but no trace of smelters, furnaces, or other means of melt-ing and casting brass.

The “globes celestial and terrestrial” which usually surmount American lodge room pillars are wholly modern inventions, without basis in Scriptural fact. Somewhere, at some time, some ritual maker con-fused the spherical form of the chapiter with an ad-ditional sphere. Desiring to account for it, he drew a map of the world on one and a map of the heavens on the other! But in the Kings and Chronicles accounts and in Josephus, are no mentions of celestial and ter-restrial globes.

All this is more interesting than important. The sym-bolical meaning of the pillars is the vital matter to Freemasons.

In the eyes of critical scholarship, the ancient meaning was of the might and majesty of Deity. From the dawn of religion the pillar, monolith or built up, has played an important part in the worship of the Unseen. From the huge boulders of Stonehenge, among which the Druids are supposed to have performed their rites, through East Indian temples, to the religion of ancient Egypt, scholars trace the use of pillars as an essential part of the religious worship; indeed, in Egypt the obe-lisk stood for the very presence of the Sun God him-self.

The ancients believed the earth to be flat and that it was supported by two Pillars of God, placed at the western entrance of the world as then known. These are now called Gibraltar, on one side of the strait and Ceuta on the other.

Some writers have suggested that the pillars repre-sent the masculine and feminine elements in nature; others, that they stand for authority of Church and State, because on stated occasions the high priest stood before one pillar and the King before the other. Some students think that they allude to the two leg-endary pillars of Enoch, upon which, tradition informs us, all the wisdom of the ancient world was inscribed in order to preserve it from inundations and confla-grations. William Preston supposed that, by them, Solomon had reference to the pillars of cloud and fire which guided the Children of Israel out of the bondage and into the Promised Land. One authority says a lit-eral translation of their names [Boaz and Jachin] is: “In Thee is strength,” and, “It shall be established,” and by a natural transposition may be thus expressed: “Oh Lord, Thou art almighty and Thy Power is established from everlasting to everlasting.”

The Entered Apprentice in the process of being passed to the degree of Fellowcraft passes between the pillars. No hint is given that he should pass nearer to one than the other; no suggestion is made that ei-ther may work a greater influence than the other. He merely passes between. A deep significance is in this very omission. Masons refer to the promise of God unto David; the interested may read in Chapter 7 of 2 Samuel, and gather that the establishment promised by the Lord was that of a house, a family, a descent of blood from David unto his children and his children’s children.

Short Talk Bulletin: Two Pillars By Carl Claudy

(cont’d. next page

Page 9: © 1985 RROPINC, Inc. Vol. 24 No. 3 Serving the Masonic

9

The names of the pillars have many translations. “Strength” and “establishment” are but two; “pow-er,” and “wisdom” or “control,” fit the meaning of the words as well.

Used to blast stumps from fields, dynamite is an aid to the farmer. Used in war it kills and maims. Fire cooks food and makes steam for engines; fire also burns houses and destroys forests. But it is not the power but the use of power which is good or bad. The truth applies to any power; spiritual, legal, monarchical, political or personal. Power is without either virtue or vice; the user may use it well or ill, ashe pleases.

Freemasonry passes the brother in the process of be-coming a Fellowcraft between the pillar of strength—power; and the pillar of establishment—choice or con-trol. He is a man now and no minor or infant. He has grown up Masonically. Before him are spread the two great essentials to all success, all greatness, and all happiness.

Like any other power - temporal or physical, religious or spiritual - Freemasonry can be used well or ill. Here is the lesson set before the Fellowcraft; if he, like Da-vid, would have his kingdom of Masonic manhood established in strength he must pass between the pil-

lars with understanding that power without control is useless, and control without power, futile. Each is a compliment of the other; in the passage between the pillars the Fellowcraft not only has his feet set upon the Winding Stairs but is given - so he has eyes to see and ears to hear - secret instructions as to how he shall climb those stairs that he may, indeed, reach the mid-dle chamber. He is to climb by strength, but directed by wisdom; he is to progress by power, but guided by control; he must rise by the might that is in him, but arrive by the wisdom of his heart.

So considered, the inaccuracies and misstatements of ritual regarding the pillars become relatively un-important; whether eighteen or thirty-five cubits high, whether cast in one place or another, whether or not surmounted in Solomon’s day with globes ter-restrial and celestial, matter little. The lesson is there, the meaning of the symbol to be read. The initiate of old saw in the obelisk the very spirit of the God he worshiped. The modern Masonic initiate may see in the two pillars the means by which he may travel a little further, a little higher towards the secret middle chamber of life, in which dwells the Unseen Presence.

Happy Thanksgiving to all! We had a great turn out for last months Oktoberfest. Brother Dave Eppley, his Lady Debbie and Brother Sammy labored long and hard to put forth a great meal. Thank you all for your tireless work and dedication to the Club, all who attended really appreciated the great meal. December is coming up fast. As always the Lodges are installing their 2017 officers and we are busily prepar-ing for Christmas and the new year. Cascade S.R. holds its annual Christmas party at the Sailing Boat on Churn Creek. We have not had a chance to firm up the date for this get together. Hopefully, we will hold the Christmas party on Sunday December 18th .There will be a full update in the December trestleboard. Please keep your calendars clear. Our events are always open to all the Masonic family. We encourages all to join in on our festivities. AGAIN, hap-py Thanksgiving to all!

Fraternally,Bryant Carter, Secretary

Sisters & Brothers: Anyone seen the top of the mountain? It

sure is picturesque to have snow on top of our mountain. Thanks again for your support on the Car Show. Burg-ers at both the dinner and booth were wonderful . Great support from the community including Sheriff Jon Lopey. Although there were two burger booths, we still had a good time and made money at the Biketobofest in McCloud . Kenny, Allen, Leo, and John flipped burgers for four hours and even got a few interested in joining. Many thanks to Annema-rie and JR for doing hot dogs at the Apple Fest in McCloud. November 12th, 2016 we will co host a Veteran’s Dinner with the Mt. Shasta Elks. Dinner will be at 5 PM. Veterans and their wives are free. All Masonic Veterans will receive a special invitation, please respond to this letter and let us know if you can make it. Plan to attend our Stated Meeting on November 2nd. It is our Annual Election of Officers. Do come and support your Lodge for 2017. Thanks to the Rutherfords for keeping the building up to snuff!!! Four Brothers have still not paid their 2016 dues and are not in good standing in the Lodge. PLEASE contact the Secretary (938-1886) See you in Lodge. Fraternally,John Murphy, Secretary

Brethren; Our next Stated Meeting is November 2,

2016. This is one of our most important meetings of the yearinthatwewillbeelectingnewofficersfortheensuingMasonic Year. It is our obligation to support our Lodge and ensure that it provides a strong and rewarding experience. As we have been taught, a Masonic Lodge should resemble a bee-hive in which all members should work together for the common good. Please join us for this important event. Thereareseatsinthelinethathavenotyetbeenfilled.Ifyouareinterestedinfillingaposition,Iwouldencourageyou to contact Brother Uriah McBroome. Our Stated Dinner is being prepared by Worshipful Randy Plummer and Brother Kemp Letts. It will including turkey, dressing, vegetable, candied yams, and a great des-sert. Please contact Kemp Letts to make your reservations. We had a great Festive Board in conjunction with West-ern Star 2 and I want to thank all of you for your help and participating. We will be having a Third Degree Ceremony on Novem-ber 16, 2016 beginning at 7:30 pm to raise Brother Shock-ley. Please join us to support Brother Shockley in the con-tinuance of his Masonic journey. It is always an opportu-nity to renew friendships and create new ones. It is also an opportunity to exercise our telephone tree and invite the Brethren on your list to this event. WM Mike DenhamReading Lodge

Dear Readers:

It is with regret but much anticipation that I have cho-sen to resign as Business and Circulation Manager of the Temples’ Trestleboard effective November 30th 2016 to spend more time with our family. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in these posi-tions, but time restraints have become the issue for my husband and me. We have become a family of 5th wheel owners and will now get to travel with our family to many of the activities and events that we used to attend and to spend more time camping and relaxing in the great outdoors. I can’t thank each of YOU, our readers, enough for the wonderful support you have given to the Trestleboard and to me over these last nine years. I have so enjoyed the notes that so many of you have sent with your donations. They were so appre-ciated and I will miss them. Effective December 1st, Michael Sanders will take over my positions. Mike is very experienced performing these duties since he did them prior to my taking over. Most things will not change i.e. articles will still go to “[email protected]”and you can direct your calls to Mike at the following phone num-ber: 226-9366.

Thank you all again!Carolyn Taylor
