MINSTREL 462 JANUARY 2021 The 18xx games are in order of starting from p2 onwards. Railway Rivals RR2416NIL is on p10, Outpost M17 ends on p11, Puerto Rico M2 is on p12 & p13. The Games That You Play is below. 1835O42 comments follow the 1835L43 report on p9. New Games: St. Petersburg M6 starts on p13. Outpost M18 will start – in the automated style - next time. We also have a 4 player 1856 and a 2 player 1835 waiting to get started next time. My musing on online board game sites last time resulted in (only) a response from Dane who said – With the exception Dominion Online (you can probably guess what game I play there) I don't play games online in real time, though see below. All my games are asynchronous (aka turn-based) on Yucata. Having found it an excellent site with more than enough games to keep me amused, I've not looked further afield. As you will know from Dane's Games, I have on a couple of occasions played a cross between real time and asynchronous – multiple games being played simultaneously in real time – on Yucata. Ah, Dominion. The online site survives after some iteration partailly documented here but the lack of a mobile implementation is a loss. The obvious (to me) comparison is with Ascension which was implemented early (2011) and well on iOS (and in 2014 on Steam and Android with cross-platform play). Each of the 11 subsequently implemented expansions has sold well on all platforms. I have had games on the go since the start and have even won – against the odds - the official worldwide monthly tournament on occasion. The structure of the Ascension app has been the reference model for later deck building apps (including Star Realms, Cthulu Realms, Shards of Infinity, Tanto Cuore and Penny Arcade – the latter two now victims of the Appocalypse as Apple forces developers to update apps or see them die) and mostly importantly has a properly functioning multi-player system for games to be played live or asynchronously (or a mix of the two). There was a functional Dominion mobile app but it was given a “cease and desist” ahead of the launch of an official app which then failed. There is still a yearning for a Dominion app and in response to a post on Reddit in October 2019 Donald X said “There are people working on a Dominion app now. I don't know when it will be out; they haven't made an official announcement and that's not my place. But they're working on it”. So more time has passed since then and there is no evidence of a mobile incarnation of Dominion. Such a pity – the convenience of mobile play would surely increase the number of games played and generally be a good thing. The 18xx games are in order of starting from p2 onwards.

My musing on online board game sites last time resulted in (only) a response from Dane who said –

With the exception Dominion Online (you can probably guess what game I play there) I don't play games online in real time, though see below.

1835O42 COMMENTS Mike B 2nd Congratulations to John and thanks to Rob. The HeE always had trains, but it took too long to

generate runs to use them on; that and key tiles always seemed to be in short supply. I should have probably pitched another PrE and nationalized the 20% share of HeE as well.

John S 3rd Well that was a close finish. I thought that I was in with a good shout for a win until SR9 when I

failed to anticipate Tim selling out of the WtE, a company with 2 trains that he held 90% of, to secure 100% of the ByE which had a single train. I think that if had included WtE in my buy list then I would have come out on top, but it wasn't to be. Congrats to John W for the win and thanks to all for playing and especially to Rob for running the show.

Tim P 5th My congratulations to John Webley for a good win in a close game, and my thanks to Rob for the

administration of this and the many other games. I fully deserved my last place having made some pretty poor decisions along the way - but I enjoyed the game for all that. Looking forward to starting another one soon.
