TRANSCRIPT
Bauman Street has long been regarded a trading centre and featured a concentration of the main mercantile establishments of the city. The street was the second most significant street of Kazan's central district. It was famous for its banks and notary offices, different shops, drugstores, and hotels. At the beginning of the twentieth century there was a shop in every building.Bauman Street has existed since the 15th century. It ran from the Khan's Palace at the edge of the city. In ancient times the Nogayskaya Road was there. At the end of the 16th century, the street was named Prolomnaya and later is was renamed Bolshaya Prolomnaya. It was named for the two breaches of the Kremlin wall, which were made as the result of the explosions of the tower Nur-Ali and Lower Nogaysky gates during the siege of the Kremlin by the troops of Ivan the Terrible in 1552..
THE CLOCK!!!
• The clock in Bauman St. is one of the attractions and It is our favorite place of meeting.• It is the crossroads of
many traffic routes.• We got there by bus, but
there is also underground station here.• You can go sightseeing
from this point.
Later the street was named Bogoyavlenskaya (Epiphany) after the church, which was built in 1731-1756.
Famous Russian singer Fyodor Shalyapin was baptised in Bogoyavlenskaya Church. Nowadays there is a statue of Shalyapin on Baumana Street, near the church. It is the only such statue in the world.
In 1930, the street was named Baumana Street in honour of the famous local revolutionary hero Nikolay Bauman. He was born in 1873 and graduated from the Kazan Veterinary Institute.
There is a museum of icons in Bogoyavlenskaya (epiphany) church.
We read about the h istory and looked at the icons on the wal ls . Some of them were painted by students of the Art school .
The street starts at the foot of the Kremlin and
reaches Tukay Square, the central square in the city.
Baumana Street is paved with multicoloured bricks;
some benches and two lines of lanterns are set
there. There are also planted lindens on the
street. Different fairs and festive presentations are held on Baumana Street.
There are a lot of monuments
in the street. They attract
Tourists from all over the
world. The fountains are
covered for winter. Some
people throw coins in the
water because they want to
come back one day!
LIKE HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD
• On the pavement there are stars with handprints of famous actors and singers.
SOUVENIR SHOPS
There are a lot of souvenir shops. They are very beautiful. People can find things
to decorate their houses like toys, cushions, statues, even little fountains –
anything you have on your mind.
SOUVENIR SHOPS
We were interested in figurines, T-shirts, mugs, traditional Russian and Tatar dolls, dishes
and other souvenirs.
USHANKA – OUR DELIGHT
We were surprised to find our hats style (ushanka)on T-shirts. It made us smile and laugh.
A metal sculpture-architectural composition with the height of 3 meters and a width of 2.8 m is made in the form of a plump, well-fed cat lying on the chair in the gazebo with a mouse on the tent roof. It was created by a Kazan sculptor, honored worker of arts of Tatarstan Igor Bashmakov.
The proverb says: "Kazan cat: Astrakhan brain, Siberian mind, gloriously lived , deliciously ate“.So lazy and fat but smart !
THE CAT OF KAZAN
THE KAZAN CAT IN SOUVENIR SHOPS
You can see the Kazan cat in almost all souvenir shops of Kazan , as it is very well known . In one of these shops we found sofa cushions. It’s a must to buy-so pretty and cosy!
