COLLECTIONS

Second Collection This Weekend ǀ Benefits students attending St.

James School. Joan Beaudry was a parishioner and dedicated teacher

at St. Mary's School in Biddeford; this fund was established in her

memory and is typically collected around Labor Day weekend.

Second Collection Next Weekend ǀ Catholic University and Special

Education Needs. Your gift supports the National University of the

Catholic Church in America, advancing Catholic knowledge and

understanding through research, teaching, learning and service.

PLEASE CONTINUE YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT ǀ Many of

you are sending payment through the US mail, to simplify the admin-

istrative work it is best to COMBINE all weekly offertory contribu-

tions to one check, one envelope; Second Collections however,

should generally remain a separate check, since Diocesan Second

Collections and USCCB National collections do not remain with the

parish. At the end of the year, there is no difference to your GIVING

RECORD. Your cooperation reduces the volume of checks and enve-

lopes to handle. THANK YOU and God bless!

Prayer for the 2020 Catholic Appeal

Loving God, You call us to a life of service, entrusting to us the mis-

sion of making your name and your love known. We strive each day

to use your generous gifts to grow ever more faithfully into a com-

munity of faith and love, attracting people to your Son, Jesus.

We are grateful for Your gifts. Help us to use them wisely in Your

service. Keep us ever mindful to the many needs of our brothers and

sisters in Christ. Help us recognize the presence of Your Son in them

and respond to the Catholic Appeal with love, compassion and gener-

osity. May our words and actions be a response to Your great love, in

the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

Blessed Ivan Merz (18961928)

By Fr. Brad Morin

Ivan Merz was born in Banja Luka, Bosnia, on Dec. 16, 1896, and

was baptized on Feb. 2, 1897. He attended elementary and middle

school in Banja Luka and, after a brief period of education at the

military academy of Wiener Noustadt, he

enrolled in 1915 at the University of Vien-

na, with the dream of teaching young peo-

ple in Bosnia; thus, he would be following

the example of his professor, Ljubomir

Marakovic, who helped Ivan to discover

the richness of the Catholic faith.

In March 1916, Ivan was enlisted in the

army and shipped to the Italian battle

front, where he spent the greater part of

two years beginning in 1917. The war

experience and its horrors marked a turn-

ing point in Ivan's young life and contrib-

uted greatly to his spiritual growth,

prompting him to abandon his future into

God's hands and to strive with all his might toward the goal of Chris-

tian perfection.

On Feb. 5, 1918, he wrote in his diary: "Never forget God! Always

desire to be united with Him. Begin each day in the first place with

meditation and prayer, possibly close to the Blessed Sacrament or

during Mass. During this time, plans for the day are made, one's de-

fects are put under examination and grace is implored for the

strength to overcome all weakness. It would be something terrible if

this war had no meaning for me! ... I must begin a life regenerated in

the spirit of this new understanding of Catholicism. The Lord alone

can help me, as man can do nothing on his own.” At this time, Ivan

also made a private vow of perpetual chastity.

After the war, he continued his studies at Vienna (191920), and

then in Paris (192022). In 1923 he obtained a degree in philosophy.

His thesis was entitled "The influence of the Liturgy on the French

authors.” He then became a professor of language and French litera-

ture and was exemplary in his dedication to the students and to his

responsibilities as a teacher.

In his spare time he studied philosophy and theology and deepened

his knowledge of the documents of the Magisterium of the Church.

Ivan was especially noted for his interest in young people and con-

cern for their growth in faith and holiness. He started the "League of

Young Croatian Catholics" and the "Croatian League of Eagles"

within the Croatian Catholic Action Movement. Their motto was:

"Sacrifice Eucharist Apostolate."

For Ivan, the purpose of this organization was to form a group of

frontline apostles whose goal was holiness. This scope of this goal

also flowed over into liturgical renewal, of which Ivan was one of the

first promoters in Croatia.

As a Catholic intellectual, Ivan was able to guide young people and

adults to Christ and His Church through his writings and organized

gatherings. He also sought to teach them love and obedience to the

Vicar of Christ and the Church of Rome.

In the face of any misunderstandings and difficulties, Ivan always

had an admirable patience and calm, the fruit of his continual union

with God in prayer. Those who knew him well described him as a

person who had his "mind and heart immersed in the supernatural."

Convinced that the most effective way to save souls was through

efficacious suffering, he offered to God all his physical and moral

sufferings, particularly for the intention of the success of his apostol-

ic endeavors.

Shortly before his death, he offered his life for the youth of Croatia.

In short, the young man believed that his vocation was very simply

"the Catholic faith.”

Ivan Merz died on May 10, ,1928 in Zagreb. He was 32 years old.

SHEPHERDS OF HOPE

G S P ǀ TT S O T ǀ S 6, 2020

Shepherds of Hope pledges ǀ For parishion-

ers who have not made a pledge, we need

your help. Please pray about taking that

step. There are cards at each church or the

parish office to fill out or take home for

prayerful consideration. Bring pledge to

the office or mail to: Good Shepherd Par-

ish, 271 Main St., Saco.

Note ǀ Any checks, cash can be dropped in

collection basket, inside a blank envelope

and must have a name and ID number to receive credit.

Check payments should be made out to: Good Shepherd Parish;

“Shepherds Of Hope” in memo line.

Current totals ǀ 769 household gifts ǀ $1,469,482 ǀ 73% of goal

Cash collected, available for projects as of July 28 ǀ 631,128

Shepherds of Hope Pledge Payments ǀ Please note that if you intend

to use ACH or credit card for payment and/or installments on pledge,

you must do so by signing into the parish’s online giving service,

WESHARE. Please do not include bank account information or cred-

it card number on pledge card. Go to the parish website to sign up

and make a payment or set up a recurring payment schedule. If you

decide to use WESHARE, mark that on your pledge card so we han-

dle the pledge properly.

We have created a link with the Shepherds of Hope logo at

goodshepherdparish.us/. For assistance, call Amy Loring at 2823321,

ext. 105. WESHARE charges a fee on each transaction as follows:

* ACH withdrawals from bank account: Fee is 10 cents per

transaction plus 1%, calculated as follows: For example, a $50

donation will include a 50cent charge, plus 10 cents, for a total fee

of 60 cents. The $50 donation results in a net donation to the parish of

$49.40.

* Credit, Debit Card Transactions: Fee is 3.25%, calculated as

follows: A $50 donation will include a 3.25% transaction fee and

amount to a charge of $1.63. The $50 donation results in a net

donation to the parish of $48.37.

Since the credit/debit card fees are more than double ACH fees, we

prefer use of ACH. Please consider this when deciding your source of

payment. Thank you for your generosity.

Saint for the Week ǀ September 6

To love God as He ought to be loved, we must be detached from all

temporal love. We must love nothing but Him, or if we love anything

else, we must love it only for His sake.

tions, Feast Day Sept. 9

NOTICES

WESHARE EMAIL CAMPAIGN ǀ Once again LPI, our online

giving service provider, is contacting parishioners to encourage

greater participation through this online platform. If we have your

email on file, soon you should receive an email from LPI outlin-

ing an invitation to sign up for this service and it couldn’t be more

timely! The service is safe and easy to use and can be found by

going directly to the parish website: goodshepherdpar-

ish.weshareonline.org. Feel free to call Amy Loring or David

Gadbois at 2823321 with any questions. Thank you for your sup-

port.

Acknowledgement Letters ǀ IRS Rules require that Donations to

GSP of $250 or more are acknowledged by us. Failure to do so could

lead to fines and denial of the deduction to the donor. Some parish-

ioners have asked the parish to save the expense of doing so and not

send one. If you do not want to receive these letters, please include a

signed note with your donation, or you may email

[email protected] and we will do our best to accom-

modate your request. We could also email donor acknowledgements,

a much more costeffective way of satisfying the requirement, if we

have your email on file. Thank you for your generosity and support.

Parish Office ǀ Staff continue working reduced hours due to the

COVID19 Pandemic, which means closing the reception office

at noon. It is our desire to help mitigate some of the lost offertory

revenues with a payroll reduction. Thank you for understanding,

and please keep Good Shepherd Parish in your prayers.

September 6 ǀ TwentyThird Sunday in Ordinary Time

It’s all about reconciliation and conversion, not punishment. Rela-

tionships are not static adventures but wonderful gifts that continue

to develop, grow, change, and mature. We are meant to be social

beings, so isolating ourselves from others is rarely helpful. But, be-

cause human beings are on the one hand tremendously gifted, talent-

ed, and blessed creations, they are on the other also flawed, broken,

and sinful. We all need to humbly admit that we are works in pro-

gress and not only capable of enriching each other’s lives but causing

deep hurts and wounds as well. Hence, we always need to be recon-

ciled. We are always growing, changing, and expanding our

knowledge of who we are and how we are meant to share life togeth-

er.

Because reconciliation and conversion are always part of the mix of

life, honesty is crucial. Without honesty, we can easily find ourselves

living a lie and causing more harm than good. Being able to freely

share our feelings, especially those involving pain and hurt, is a char-

ism necessary to pursue and an art to learn. When we are wronged or

wrong someone else, we do not enjoy the confrontation that can and

needs to come. We are taught to keep our feelings to ourselves, espe-

cially when they are negative, and we tend to avoid difficult conver-

sations. Hence, we never really learn how to confront another, suc-

cessfully resolve conflict, find reconciliation, and welcome conver-

sion. When we hurt or wrong someone, it does not mean that we are

a bad or sinful person who deserves only punishment and excommu-

nication. Quite the opposite! We are simply a human person who can

make poor choices and sin and can be forgiven. We can restore and

deepen the relationship that has been affected and find our way home

again.

Jesus clearly wants to avoid shame because it has no purpose in

achieving reconciliation and conversion. All broken relationships

deserve a chance at reconciliation. Every person has room for growth

and a need for conversion. We have to learn to be okay with honesty

and not be afraid to hear and process what someone needs to say,

even if it is difficult for us to hear. Severing a relationship, both per-

sonally or with the church community as a whole, ought to definitely

be a last resort and only pursued when all else has failed.
