The Technical University of Denmark isthe biggest Sun Ray cluster in NorthernEurope. Using thin cl ients has meant that10,000 students and staff at the Uni-versity now have virtual work places.

These virtual work places have made itpossible to l ink up with the University net-work from absolutely any computer inthe world. To carry on working whi leaway, users only need a USB stick thathas ThinLinc cl ient software on it. Thedesktop on whatever computer happensto be used appears just as the user usu-al ly sees it.

" I use the solution every day. I 'm com-pletely dependent on the freedom thatthe solution provides," says Bernd Dam-mann, project coordinator and universitylecturer at the Technical University ofDenmark.

WHAT WAS NEEDED

The Technical University of Denmark,with 7,000 students and 3,000 staff, waslooking for a solution where the usercould seamlessly l ink up to the Uni-versity network from any Internet café.

There was also a desire to avoid theheadache of making backups and tohand over ful l responsibi l i ty for this tothe University's network department sothat it could be dealt with central ly.

THE SOLUTION

Using Cendio's ThinLinc software, eachPC has become a virtual work place. Thin-Linc l inks thin cl ients to a central server.

By concentrating the computing re-sources on a central server and providingthe staff with terminals, i .e. simple receiv-ers, it has been possible to central ise al lappl ications on the server.

This has meant that only the screen con-tents is sent between the computers, as

opposed to ful l processing operations.The need for a powerful network hasbeen el iminated.

The system has also improved securityin terms of University confidentia l in-formation, since, as printed pages, thescreen images are of no value at al l tohackers.

Cendio's ThinLinc is based on open pro-tocols and runs on Linux, Solaris andWindows Terminal Services platforms, aswel l as others, and this has meant thatthere can be a mix of appl ications fromdifferent platforms.

ThinLinc was therefore the best solutionfor the University's many Sun Solarisservers and has also proved a good addi-tion to the Sun Ray terminal system to-gether with a l ink to Windowsappl ications via Windows Terminal Ser-vices. I ts security and graphics featureswere also important parameters.

THE BENEFIT

For students and staff at the University the solutionhas brought them complete freedom to be able towork from home or from any computer they happento choose.

User administration has been dramatical ly reduceddue to updates and backups being dealt with at a cent-ral location. I t is now easier for the University to man-age and monitor its computer infrastructure.
