FOUR GREAT VIRTUES OF THESE TEN DAYS

1. Allaah swears an oath by these ten days

Swearing an oath by something is an indication of its importance in the sight of Allaah. Allaah says: “By the dawn; by the ten nights” [al-Fajr 89:1-2]. Ibn ‘Abbaas said that this refers to the first ten days and ten nights of Dhul Hijjah.

2. In these ten days Allaah completed His religion.

This was done on the Day of Arafah which is the 9th Dhul Hijjah. Narrated Tariq bin Shibab: Some Jews said, “Had this verse been revealed to us, we would have taken that day as Eid.”

`Umar said, “What verse?” They said:– “This day I have Perfected your religion for you, Completed My Favour upon you And have chosen for you Islam as your religion” (5.3) `Umar said, “I certainly know the place where it was revealed; It was revealed while Allaah’s Apostle was staying at `Arafat on a Friday” (Bukhari).

Al-Tabarī mentions that “When the aayah, “This day, I have perfected your religion for you…” was revealed, during the great day of Hajj (the Day of `Arafah) `Umar cried. The Prophet said, `What makes you cry’ He said, `What made me cry is that our religion is being perfected for us. Now it is perfect, nothing is perfect, but it is bound to deteriorate.’ The Prophet said, “You have said the truth.”

3) The Day Of Arafah is the day on Which Allaah Took The Covenant From The Progeny Of Adam.

Allaah says: And (remember) when your Lord brought forth from the Children of Adam, from their loins, their seed and made them testify as to themselves (saying): “Am I not your Lord?” They said: “Yes! We testify,” lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection: “Verily, we have been unaware of this.” [al-A`raaf (7):172]

Allaah took a covenant with all of mankind with the fact that He is their Lord and that they have no other lord or deity but Him. This covenant took place in Arafah: They said,

“Yes, we have testified.” Therefore, it is no longer acceptable to say on the Day of Judgment that they forgot and were unaware of the covenant, or to claim that their fathers made shirk and they, being their descendants, thus followed them. The shirk of one’s father is not an excuse for someone to deviate from the covenant of the fitrah. This covenant is between them and Allaah, and their fathers have nothing to do with it. However, it is out of the Mercy of Allaah that He does not bring people to account by virtue of the covenant of the fitrah alone but after sending messengers to invite them to Allaah. Allaah Almighty says:

“[We Sent] messengers as bringers of good tidings and warmers so that mankind will have no argument against Allaah after the messengers. And ever is Allaah Exalted in Might and Wise.” [4:165]

4) These ten days also include the Eid al Adha which is known as Yawm al-Nahar (Day of Sacrifice).

This day of Eid is the greatest day of the entire year and the greatest day of Hajj, which combines many acts of worship in a way unlike any other day. The Messenger of Allaah (salalahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “The most excellent days with Allaah is the day of an-Nahr (i.e Eid ul Adha)”. (Abu Dawud authenticated by al-Albani)

BEST DUA ON THE DAY OF ARAFAHTHE PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PEACE AND BLESSINGS OF ALLAH BE UPON HIM) SAID:

“The best Du’a is Du’a on the day of ‘Arafah and the best that I and the Prophets before me said is

“Laa ilaaha illallaah wahdahu la shareeka lah,lahu’l-mulku wa lahu’l-hamdu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer.”

(There is none worthy of worship but Allaah alone, with no partner or associate; His dominion,to him belongs all praise and He has power over all things).

(Al-Tirmidhi)

1. Prepare for HajjOne of the best deeds that one can do during these ten days is to perform Hajj.

Those who’ve been on Hajj know the beauty of entering Ihram (the sacred state), the journey to Mina and the blessed prayers on the day of ‘Arafah in the sight of Allah (SWT). They’ve experienced the joy of collecting pebbles, the stoning of the Jamarat and in offering the farewell tawaf. When you decide to go on Hajj, it’s important to learn each of the obligatory stages of ibadah, the Sunnah actions and blessed invocations.

Sadly, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, undertaking Hajj will not be possible for many peo-ple this year. However, we can learn about how to fulfil this sacred pillar and prepare for the future insha’Allah — as well as maximise on the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

Whilst we’re in lockdown, why not:Learn about all the conditions of HajjStart a Hajj fundIn the lead up to Hajj, we’ll be sharing content online about the sacred rites so you can remember what it was like or learn for a future pilgrimage insha’Allah.

2. Fasting the 9 Days of Dhul HijjahIt is recommended to fast on the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah, especially on the 9th which is the blessed day of Arafah. It is Sunnah to fast on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah (the day before Eid, known as the day of Arafah). Allah’s Messenger encouraged us to do righteous deeds in the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah; and indeed, fasting is one of the best of deeds.

The Messenger of Allaah (salalahu alaihi wa sallam) was asked about fasting on the day of ‘Arafah and he said: “I ask Allaah that it may expiate for (the sins of) the year that comes before it and the year that comes after it.”

Therefore, we should try our utmost to fast all the blessed 9 days of Dhul Hijjah particularly the 9th of Dhul Hijjah which is the day of Arafah.

The blessing of fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah in particular is that Allah (SWT) removes our wrongdoings from the previous year and the year to come, subhanAllah!

10

If we abstain from eating, drinking and engaging in sexual relations from dawn to sunset, then our fast will be accepted, insha’Allah. We should also guard our tongues from back-biting, spreading gossip, obscenity and lies.

Likewise, we must guard our ears and avoid listening to such things. When we break our fast, we shouldn’t overeat so we can avoid becoming lethargic and ensure that we can get up and pray late-night prayers such as Tahajjud.

Finally, when we’ve finished our fast, we shouldn’t simply expect that it was ‘good enough’, but rather we should feel grateful to Allah. We should approach all our ibadah (acts of worship) with balance: between fear and hope – having hope in Allah, but also not taking His mercy for granted, so that we continue to strive to please Him.

Almighty Allah says, “All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him, except fasting, which is for Me and I shall reward for it.” we may not get this opportunity again next year as life is uncertain and we should never procrastinate on doing good actions.

Note: The 10th of Dhul Hijjah is the day of Eid ul Adha and it is prohibited to fast on this day.

3. Reciting tasbeeh, tahmeed, tahleel and takbeer abundantly. It is Sunnah to recite takbeer (Allahu Akbar), tahmeed (Alhamdulillah), tahleel (La-ilaaha ill-Allaah) and tasbeeh (SubhanAllah) during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. These words should be recited abundantly in the masjids, homes, streets and in every place where it is permissible to remember and glorify Allah.

Allaah says: “and mention the name of Allaah on appointed days.” [al-Hajj 22:28]

Ibn Abbaas said: “The ‘appointed days’ are the first ten days (of Dhul Hijjah)” The Prophet (salalahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “There are no days greater in the sight of Allaah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so during this time recite a great deal of Tahleel (La-ilaaha ill-Allaah), Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) and Tahmeed (Alhamdulillah).” (Ahmad).

The Prophet (salalahu alaihi wa sallam) said:“The best supplication offered is on day of ‘Arafah and the best that I and the Prophets before me uttered is;

11

Laa Ilaaha Ilal-llaah, Wahdahu Laa Shareeka Lahu, Lahul-Mulk Wa Lahul-Hamd Wa Huwa ‘Alaa Kulli Shay’in Qadeer”. (Tirmidhee).

Reciting the Takbeeraat-e-Tashreeq from the 9th to the 13th of Dhul Hijjah: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha illallahu Wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Wa lillahil Hamd.

Translation: “Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. There is no deity besides Allah and Allah is the greatest. Allah is the greatest and all praises are for Allah only.”

Tip: Remember and glorify Allah no matter what you are doing: This is particularly easy as one can remember Allah anywhere and at any time whether it is during work or any daily activity.

4. Give SadaqahAs the rewards of doing good deeds during these days are increased significantly then we should also give as much as we can in charity. Allah promised forgiveness of our sins if we give in charity and give to the poor and needy. He honoured our charity and described it as a “beautiful loan to Allah“ to emphasise that we are doing something good that He loves, and that He himself will pay our loan back to us doubled:

Anyone who was associated with Prophet Muhammad (SAW) could not help but also be kind and generous. So, his companions could not help but also be kind and generous.

Abu Bakr (RA) gave everything he had to help those in need. As Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “None of you will believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself” (Bukhari).

Your giving doesn’t have to be big. Allah (SWT) knew that when the light of Islam enters the heart, we look to how we can benefit others. So, He made it possible for anyone to contribute – even if it’s simply with a smile!

It’s relatively easy to give what we have, or to spare what we don’t want. But what about instead of buying something we want this month, like a new gadget or some clothes, giving that money to those in need instead?

Page 12: | 01582 48 18 10 · FOUR GREAT VIRTUES OF THESE TEN DAYS 1. Allaah swears an oath by these ten days Swearing an oath by something is an indication of its importance in the sight of

12

What counts is your intention, so give whatever you can, for example:- Donate to charity- Offer someone a smile- Volunteer your time to help others

5. Making alot of Dua.Almighty Allah says in the Qur’an,“When my servants ask you concerning me, (tell them) I am indeed close (to them). I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calls on me.” [Suratul Baqarah:186]

We should busy ourselves in Dua during these 10 blessed days and nights particularly on the night and day of Arafat which is the 9th of Dhul Hijjah. Duas are also readily accepted during fasting, especially just before Suhur ends and just before breaking the fast.

6. Recite Qur’anLet’s make the most of these beloved days by reading and reciting as much of the Holy Qur’an as we can, insha’Allah.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will receive one good deed as ten good deeds like it. I do not say that alif-lam-meem is one letter, but rather alif is a letter, lam is a letter, and meem is a letter.” (Tirmidhi)

SubhanAllah! Imagine, if one single letter of the Qur’an equals ten good deeds, thenpicture how great the reward is for reading these blessed letters during the beloved days of Dhul Hijjah – the best days of the year! Once this blessed month ends, we should also strive to read and recite the Qur’an throughout the rest of the year. It’s such a wonderful form of worship to Allah (SWT).

Remember: These sacred words that we utter will either testify for or against us. Let’s read and embody the Qur’an, insha’Allah.

The benefits are immense. By reading the Qur’an you can:- See guidance from Allah (SWT)- Calm your soul- Improve your Arabic (you’ll even be rewarded if you struggle!)- Gain intercession on the Day of JudgementSo, make the Qur’an your blessed friend this Dhul Hijjah!

Page 13: | 01582 48 18 10 · FOUR GREAT VIRTUES OF THESE TEN DAYS 1. Allaah swears an oath by these ten days Swearing an oath by something is an indication of its importance in the sight of

7. RepentWe all sin. None of us are perfect. And that means that we should call ourselves to account regularly and ask Allah (SWT) for forgiveness.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:“Every son of Adam commits sin, and the best of those who commit sin are those who repent.” (Ibn Majah)We should therefore take some time to ask Allah (SWT) to forgive all our sins and mistakes – including both those we know of and those we aren’t aware of.

The Hujjaj (pilgrims undertaking Hajj) will be standing on the Day of ‘Arafah begging Al-lah for forgiveness and we can do the same from home. Just as the Hujjaj try their best to change their lives for the better after returning from Hajj, we too should commit to changing for the better.

We should sincerely ask Allah (SWT) for forgiveness (istighfar). We should also turn back to Allah with a sincere intention not to return to the original wrongdoing (tawbah).

It’s also important that if we have wronged an individual, we ask them for forgiveness and try to right the wrong. For example, if we have taken something, we should return it.

Remember Allah’s love and strive for a more righteous future: “Surely Allah loves those who turn much (to Him)” (Qur’an, 2:222).

8. Offering the Qurbani (sacrifice of a livestock animal)The qurbani (also known as udh’hiya) is the sacrifice of a livestock animal during Eid ul-Adha. It is the sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim ‘alayhi’l-salām (peace be upon him).

It is a means of getting closer to Allah subḥānahu wa ta’āla (glorified and exalted be He). It is obligatory upon every sane adult who is not a traveller and can afford it (wealth equal to or more than nisab). It is performed on the days of sacrifice which is the 10th, 11th or 12th of Dhul Hijjah. One may sacrifice a thousand animals on days other than these, but it will never be regarded or considered as udh’hiya. Therefore, the qurbani is a sacred act which can only be done during the three days of Dhul Hijjah as specified. Regarding the qurbani, Allah says in the Qur’an:

Page 14: | 01582 48 18 10 · FOUR GREAT VIRTUES OF THESE TEN DAYS 1. Allaah swears an oath by these ten days Swearing an oath by something is an indication of its importance in the sight of

14

“It is not their meat, nor their blood, that reaches Allah, It is their piety that reaches Allah.” [Surah Al-Haj:37]

Tip: It is best to go about the sacrifice the traditional way and offering it in your locality so that you obtain the lesson from the sacrifice and remind yourself of the emotions and test that Prophet Ibrahim ‘alayhi’l-salām (peace be upon him) himself endured. However, where you face logistical issues, nowadays it is much easier for us to fulfil this sacred act by the mere click of a button over the Internet where we can buy an animal to be sacrificed on the various established Muslim charity websites.
