Statement of Communion Practice

Luther found his deepest treasure in the forgiveness of sins and called it “the sun around which all other doctrines revolve like pla-nets.” Jesus promised forgiveness in the Lord’s Supper. Deeply thankful for His gift to us here, we also express our deep desire to celebrate the sacrament according to His Will. As this includes doc-trinal oneness, we practice close communion and asks guests to speak with the pastor before the service.

We thank Rev. Michael Barnes for delivering today‘s sermon, emphasiz-ing the mission focus of our church body. May the Lord continue to bless Rev. Barnes and his ministry.

We remember our members who are celebrating birthdays this week—Sherri Johnson, Andrea Johnson, Alicia Drier, Rev. Marvin Hinkle, Aaron Bergman, David Brandt, Daniel Linnemeier, Mike Selking, Sam Baumann, Denise Conrad, Chase McAllister, and Devin Sielschott. We also remem-ber all in the teaching profession as well as those who serve in a support-ing role—aides, librarians, cooks, secretaries, custodial, childcare, etc. as the school year winds to a close this week (and for some next week). May our loving Savior direct, bless, and guide their lives.

May the Great Physician grant health and strength to all who are in need of His healing hand. We especially remember Elfurt Blomenberg (re-

Page 3: Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Friedheim 10653 N 550 W Decatur, IN … · 2015-11-10 · Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Friedheim 10653 N 550 W Decatur, IN 46733 Rev. Daniel F. Dahling 547-4248

turned home), Lynn Fuhrmann, Jim Riemke, and Connie Darnell (Carol Hitzfield‘s sister).

We remember in our prayers the family and friends of Dick Hileman who was called to his heavenly home on Friday, May 22, and was given Chris-tian burial this past Tuesday, May 26. May the God of all comfort be with those who mourn, reminding them of that great day when all believers will be reunited in heaven.

We rejoice with Emily Conrad and Matthew Fyfe who were married before the Lord‘s altar yesterday afternoon at St. John‘s Bingen. May our Hea-venly Father bless this couple as they begin their lives together.

We remember those who are serving our country—Jason Putteet who is in South Korea, Randy McAllister (Fern Riemke‘s son and brother of Kim, Terry, and Julie) who is serving in Germany, our reservists, Mike Brandt, Cody Kiess (grandson of Gene & Irene Kiess), and Josh Colwell (Tiffany‘s husband), Nic Timm (Lowell & Jean‘s son), James Johnson (Jean Timm‘s nephew), and Chad Hall (Doris Conrad‘s son-in-law). May the Lord pro-tect and guide them in their missions.

We remember in our prayers Delmar & Joyce Heckman who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this Friday, June 5. May our Heavenly Fa-ther continue to bless their home, remaining at the center of their lives.

The flowers have been placed in church today to the glory of God and in honor of two special couples celebrating significant anniversaries last Fri-day, May 29. Elfurt & Adele Blomenberg were married 60 years ago, while Alvin & Shirley Witte celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. The flowers for the Witte‘s were placed in church by their children, Wava and Mark and their families, while the Tom Blomenberg family placed the flow-ers in church in honor of Elfurt & Adele. Both sets of flowers have been placed in church, with much love and admiration. May the Lord continue to bless these families remaining at the center of their homes.

Board of Stewardship‘s Food for Thought – Knowing that God is the Crea-tor and Provider of all things motivates us to worship Him with our faithful stewardship. As faithful stewards, we acknowledge God as the source and owner of everything. We are merely managers or caretakers of His property that is on loan to us. In our faithful stewardship, we seek to use our lives and blessings according to His will. We understand that our main purpose is to serve and glorify Him. We seek God‘s wisdom and

strength to fulfill our stewardship tasks, and we are aware of our need to be responsible and accountable. The reward for our faithfulness will come from hearing God say, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” (Matthew 25:23).

Included in this morning‘s bulletin is our weekly study guide, ―Time in the Word.‖ Next week‘s theme is ―Trinity Sunday.‖

You can watch Worship for Shut-Ins on Sunday mornings at 6:30 a.m. on WPTA-TV Channel 21, at 8 a.m. on Digital 33.2 & Satellite 252 on Sunday mornings, or on Comcast Cable Channel 55 on Sunday and Monday af-ternoons at 4 p.m. They are also now broadcasting via the DIRECTV Channel 377 on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time.

It was sponsored by their family.

Just a reminder that the Monday evening Bible class will not meet this Monday, June 1, since 8th grade graduation is being held at Preble that evening at 7 p.m. Class will resume on June 8.

Kathy Bultemeier (639-3636) is June‘s ―Meals of Grace‖ coordinator. Please contact Kathy if you know of someone who could benefit from this ministry of our church. The freezer is getting a little low. If you would be

Page 5: Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Friedheim 10653 N 550 W Decatur, IN … · 2015-11-10 · Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Friedheim 10653 N 550 W Decatur, IN 46733 Rev. Daniel F. Dahling 547-4248

willing to donate some food—family dishes or meals for one or two are both needed—for this ministry, it would be much appreciated. Main dish-es, soups, casseroles, applesauce, desserts (anything that freezes well) just need to be marked with a short description and date placed in the freezer.

Grinsfelder has made two presentations, on January 11 and on April 28, showing a possible way to create a gathering area and place bathrooms on the main floor of the church and to add classroom space, a kitchen area, and offices. Planning Committee and Council members will be available after services to help explain the concept and answer questions. There are drawings available for you to look over. You can also go to the church‘s website, www.zionfriedheim.org, and click on ―Church Expansion Proposal Information.‖ An artist‘s rendition of the proposed expansion from both the northwest and southwest view is available for you. By click-ing on the pictures, an enlarged view can be previewed. From this site you can go to 1st floor plan of proposed site, as well as proposals of the basement plan, north elevation, south elevation, and west elevation. A site plan for the proposed expansion is also included. Conceptual draw-ings for a Parish Hall type addition have also been (or will soon be) placed on the website. You might especially want to check out the Expansion Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ‘s) to see if one of your questions is answered there. The second informational meeting is scheduled for today following the worship service. Questions or comments should be directed to the following: Chairman of the Congregation – Mike Conrad (547-4717), Chairman of the Elders – John Nidlinger (724-9920), and Planning Committee Representative – Mike Werling (639-6132).

LYF MEMBERS: There will be a short meeting after next Sunday‘s wor-ship service (June 7). We need to discuss our July outing and other summer activities, including the picnic on June 20. We will meet in the back of church.

There are sign-up sheets in the south entranceway for the 2009 sponsor-ship of our weekly radio broadcast as well as placing flowers on the altar. Don‘t forget to sign your name on this sheet so that others can see which weeks are open. Thank you

Council Members: The minutes from the May 5, 2009 Council Meeting are in your slots in either entranceway of the church. You may pick them

up as you leave the worship service today. The next Council Meeting is on Tuesday, June 2, at 8 p.m. in the church basement.

Are you willing to help with our Sunday School program? We are looking for an individual who would volunteer to serve as Assistant Sunday School Superintendent for the 2009-2010 school year. This individual would then become the Sunday School Superintend the following year. If you have questions or would be willing to be a part of this program, please contact a member of the School Board (Mitch Baumann, Randy Hockemeyer, or Scott Hormann) or our current Sunday School administrators—Kristin Scheumann, our Sunday School Superintendent, or Amy Walker, the As-sistant Sunday School Superintendent. Thanks!

Don‘t forget to pick up your BBQ chicken you ordered from our Thrivent representatives this morning. If you didn‘t purchase pre-sale tickets, there is a limited supply of ―extras‖ available this morning. The cost today is $6. You can pick up your chicken after church. Chicken will also be available following this morning‘s informational meeting, so don‘t hesitate to stay for Grinsfelder‘s presentation.

The Portals of Prayer for July-September 2009 have arrived and can be found in either entranceway of the church. You may pick up a copy at your convenience. The new LWML Quarterlies can also be found in either entranceway. Take one home with you today!

The softball season has begun. There is a doubleheader today at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. All games are played at Hoagland Fireman‘s Park. You just need to be a high school student (or entering high school next fall) or older to be eligible to play. If you have questions, please contact Jason Buuck at 413-0702.

The 18-hour Relay for Life event will be held at Adams Central High School beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 26, and concluding at noon on Friday, June 27. Marlene Conrad, Leesa Heckman, Betty Sielschott, Al, Shirley, and Allison Hormann have all agreed to walk in the Relay. If you wish to donate money to the cause you may see any of the above. For a minimum donation of $10 you may purchase a luminary in tribute of someone who has been touched by cancer. The luminary will be marked ―In Memory Of‖ or ―In Honor Of‖ the person designated by the donor. See one of the participants listed above to fill out the required form. After the opening ceremony at 6 p.m., cancer survivors will take a ―victory lap‖

Page 7: Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Friedheim 10653 N 550 W Decatur, IN … · 2015-11-10 · Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Friedheim 10653 N 550 W Decatur, IN 46733 Rev. Daniel F. Dahling 547-4248

around the track. At approximately 9:45 p.m. the luminaria ceremony will be held. Many fun activities will be held and everyone is welcome to walk around the track with the Thrivent team. Thrivent‘s team will be hosting a meal on Friday, June 26, with serving to begin at 5 p.m. The menu in-cludes hot chicken sandwiches, sloppy joes, hot dogs, brats, sauerkraut, German potato salad, and a variety of delicious desserts. A free will do-nation will be taken for the supper with 100% of these funds going to the Relay for Life. Friedheim is responsible for bringing the following items: one worker (4 p.m. to 5 p.m.), two workers each for the 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. shift, and two workers from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Also needed is a roaster of German potato salad, a large crock pot of sloppy joes (8 lbs. of hamburger in the crock), 80 hot dogs, two cantaloupes (cut up), and one watermelon (cut up) as well as four pans of dessert—one peaches and cream cheese-cake, two banana split desserts, and one lemon delight. The recipe for the dessert will be provided and it is preferred that the dessert be made in a disposable pan. Please call Betty Sielschott (724-3946) if you are will-ing to work or make a food donation.

The church picnic is only a few weeks away—Saturday, June 20. It will be lots of fun so plan on attending. Larry & Carol Hitzfield are bringing their draft horses that day, you can enjoy some karaoke, the big Titanic slide, and maybe even taking part in a rubber chicken catapult contest! Of course, there will be great food and fellowship. Your help is still needed; however, to make this a reality. We need individuals to take down, organ-ize the food, plan the games, and take care of the drinks. Won‘t you con-sider helping out to make this wonderful afternoon/evening a reality by contacting a member of the Board of Stewardship—Shirley Drier, Cindy Des Jean, or Lisa Bultemeier—as soon as possible. We appreciate those who have already offered their help. Thank you!

The Friedheim ―Wednesday Walkers‖ will be a reality again this year. Starting on Wednesday, June 3, anyone who enjoys walking and enjoy-ing the beauties of nature (and the company of others on their walks) are invited to meet at the Parish Hall at 6:30 p.m. If you have questions, you can contact Shirley Drier at 547-4419 or e-mailing her at [email protected].

The Lutheran Home Auxiliary is sponsoring a chicken barbecue/dinner theater on Friday, June 12, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 6701 S. Anthony Blvd. in Ft. Wayne. Dinner theater (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Office) show times are 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. This is a 20- to 25-

minute skit, with a lot of humor. Pre-sale tickets are $6.50 and $7 at the door. Drive through (½ chicken only) is available from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at a cost of only $4. Carry outs are available from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are available in the church office.

Although the Morning Glories are taking their ―summer‖ break, there are projects to complete over the summer. If you like to quilt, there are some baby quilts and wall hangings that need to be done, or, perhaps, you like to embroider. There are several of these projects (pillowcases, table run-ners, etc.) that need completed. All supplies would be furnished. If you are willing to lend a helping hand, please contact Marlene Conrad or Shir-ley Buuck. Thanks!

We would like to have another ―card shower‖ for the Groth‘s. Rev. Chuck Groth will be celebrating his birthday on July 21 and we would like to col-lect birthday cards now through June 7. It can take a month or more for packages to reach them. Even though Sunday School is out, perhaps some of the children would be willing to make a card. They so appre-ciated those cards the last time. There will be boxes in either entrance-way of the church for you to deposit your card (and even some extra cards if you forgot to bring one). Jan Buuck is coordinating this project and she will mail them early in June. We have just received their May newsletter that the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Mission has decided to move the Groth‘s out of Cambodia and back to the States. They will be moving back some time this summer. They ask for your encouragement and prayers to see them through this time with grace and a vision of God‘s plan. This is a difficult and painful time for them as they are not yet ready to retire and are looking towards a ministry position in the States.

Keep Immanuel House in your thoughts when you are cleaning out your closets. Your clean, gently used items can be placed in the box in the Parish Hall near the east door and Joe Gorman will deliver them to Imma-nuel House. Thank you for your generous support of this ministry.

The Lutheran Journal has arrived and can be found in either entranceway of the church. You may pick up a copy of this periodical as you leave the worship service this morning.

As a way of assisting the Decatur community during these difficult eco-nomic times, Zion Lutheran Church, 1010 W Monroe St, will offer free suppers to anyone in Adams County and the surrounding area on Thurs-

day evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. now through Thursday, June 4. After the meal, there will be a Bible study available for adults, teens, and children for those who wish to stay. Donations and helpers are greatly needed as this is not a budgeted project; it is a ministry. Please contact Sandy Criswell (724-8414) if you can help.

You can enjoy brunch at the Seminary next Sunday, June 7, from 11 .m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Katherine Luther Dining Hall. All brunches feature full breakfast and lunch selections with main entrees, side dishes, and a salad bar. You can end your feast with a tasty choice from the dessert bar. The cost is $11 for adults ($10 for senior citizens—60 or older). Children (4-12) eat for only $5.

Does it seem a little early to be working on the next Lenten devotional? Not really, if you have some time, you might want to look over the availa-ble dates, topics, and scripture and make your choice of topics for our 2010 Lenten Devotional, The Gospel of Mark. The list is posted on our website and was included in your June newsletter. You can make your choice and e-mail Pastor Dahling ([email protected]) with your selection. It will then be marked as ―taken‖ so that it doesn‘t get chosen twice. Your help is so very much appreciated.

Trinity Lutheran Church, 7819 Decatur Road is sponsoring an ―All-You-Can-Eat‖ Pancake Brunch on Sunday, June 14, from noon to 1:30 p.m. The meal also includes sausage, fruit cup, and a beverage. The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children (5-12), and free for those children four years of age or younger. The proceeds will go to help fund new flooring in the Fellowship Hall.

Friedheim‘s 7th grad-ers include Trevor Black, Kolton Everett, Anna Franke, Freddie Geels, Ryan Hockemeyer, Kaity Jenkins, and Alyssa Strickler. Funds raised will be used to help pay for their trip to Washington, DC next spring.

All school accounts (registration/tuition fees, hot lunch, extended care, and overdue library books) were to be paid in full by May 29. Report cards will be withheld from families who have any outstanding fees. If you have any questions on these accounts you can contact the school office (registration/tuition), Kim Tinsley at 622-7841 (hot lunch), Tammy Melcher at 639-6064 (extended care), or Gemila Rabel, who will be in the library after school each day.

The last day of school is this Tuesday, June 2, with dismissal at 11 a.m. No lunches will be served and all students will need to find transportation home that day. Sports

Congratulations to the Lady Warriors varsity soccer team on their out-standing 11-0 season! From May 13 through May 22, for every goal scored by Wyneken each player and coach gave one dollar towards the fight against breast cancer. Parents and fans were also encouraged to participate. The girls were able to raise almost $1,000. Thanks to all who helped to fight for a cure one goal at a time.

Check the office for brochures and registration forms for various summer camps. There might be something that interests your child!

God Has Made Us His Stewards

As God‘s stewards, our first assignment was given to us in Genesis 1:28: “God blessed them and said to them, „Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.‟ ” God delegated us as His representatives to rule the Earth in His place. We have been given dominion over God‘s creation. Because God has re-tained His ownership of all things, we are merely stewards who are re-sponsible and accountable to God.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the awesome and challenging privilege You

have been given me to be a steward of Your creation. To think

that the God of creation is giving me this opportunity is very hum-

bling and exciting. Grant me faith to honor you in all I do. In Chr-

ist’s name I pray. Amen.

Readings – Pentecost

Exodus 19:1-9 – At Mount Sinai - In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt—on the very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai. After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. Then Moses went up to God,

and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, ―This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: ‗You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles‘ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully

and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a king-dom of priests and a holy nation.‘ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.‖ So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the LORD had commanded him to speak. The people all responded together, ―We will do everything the LORD has said.‖ So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD. The LORD said to Moses, ―I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you.‖ Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Romans 8:12-17 (22-27) – Life through the Spirit – Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.‖ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit n that we are God‘s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. …We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of child-birth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adop-tion as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it

patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us

with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts

knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God‘s will.

P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. John 14:8-21 – Jesus—the way to the Father - Philip said, ―Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.‖ Jesus answered: ―Don‘t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‗Show us the Father‘? Don‘t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Fa-ther is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evi-dence of the miracles themselves. I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. ―If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me any-more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.‖
