Protect Your Family from the Flu The flu bug and other germs are gearing up for their big parties. They LOVE it when kids go back to school! It’s so much easier if the kids are all in one place. They are very clever! They sneak their way onto our kid’s hands and face. They know we can’t see them. Wouldn’t it be nice if our kids could see germs? They would be much better at making sure they washed their hands. They wouldn’t let them get near their mouths, nose or eyes. Since they can’t see germs we have to do our best at teach-ing them that they’re real. Remind them what they have to do to keep those little germs from getting into their bodies. Here are some important tips to teach our children:

Have everyone in the family 6 months and older get the flu shot.

Wash hands after using bathroom, coughing, sneezing, playing outside, and before eating.

Wash hands long enough to hum the Happy Birthday song twice. Dry hands using a clean paper towel or let them air dry.

Give kids sanitizer to keep in their desk or backpack. Use before eating snacks and after touching things other kids use.

Cough and sneeze into a tissue or the upper arm.

Keep hands away from the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Don’t share food, cups, or silverware with anyone.

Get plenty of sleep, eat healthy, and get exercise every day.

Ask the school and daycare about their rules when kids are sick.

Protect Your Baby from RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) Most babies catch this virus by age 2. Healthy babies usu-ally have mild symptoms like a cold. For some babies getting RSV can be very serious. It is the #1 reason babies under 12 months have to go to the hospital. Your baby has a higher risk to get very sick from RSV if they:

• Are born early (35 weeks or less)

• Have asthma or lung disease

• Have heart disease

• Are around second-hand smoke

Call doctor right away if your baby has any of these symptoms:

• Wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing)

• Fever (in babies under 3 months)

• Severe cough

• Problems breathing

• Blue lips or fingertips

Ways you can protect your high risk baby:

• Wash yours and others hands before touching your baby

• Stay away from crowds and sick people

• Clean babies toys, blankets, sheets

• Don’t let anyone smoke around your baby

Talk with your baby’s doctor to see if your baby is high risk. Ask what else you can do to protect your baby.

Keep that Connection with Your Teen No, you’re not imagining it! Your teens are getting more difficult. They disagree with everything we say and do. Getting them to talk is more difficult. If we lose all communication we are left with our imaginations about what they are doing when we’re not around. Life would be better for all if we could keep the communication lines open. Here are some ways to keep that connection with your teen:

v Be respectful and considerate. Don’t interrupt or raise your voice. Use manners as you would a friend.

v Listen more than you talk. Don’t over-react or be too quick to criticize. If they don’t feel safe they won’t talk.

v Show your love. Tell them you love them and find a way to show them every day.

v Always be honest. If they find out you lied to them they won’t trust you.

v Don’t pressure them to talk. It will shut them down quickly.

v Apologize when you make a mistake or over-react.

v Acknowledge their feelings. Don’t try to change them by saying, “You shouldn’t feel that way.” Instead try saying something like “I understand that you are feeling frustrated or sad, etc.”

v Find a common interest. Communication will happen if you are doing something fun together.

v Welcome their friends. This will help you get to know them and what they do when they’re together.

v Text. They will talk more without worrying about what their friends think.

Accept that you will make mistakes. Keep an attitude of mutual respect and encouragement and they will naturally know to respect themselves, you and other people.

Are You Feeling Depressed? Depression is a word we use all the time. It is often used to describe feelings of sadness. Things happen in our lives that cause sadness. What about the times we feel extreme sadness for weeks or months and aren’t really sure why? Depression saps all our energy. It leaves us with no motivation or ability to feel joy. Depression is an illness that won’t go away without help. It’s not something that you can just “get over” on your own. You deserve to be happy! Help is waiting for you.
