Zanthoxylum alatum Roxb. is a perennial plant native to China, where its pericarps were used as

a spice in place of pepper. In Chinese folk medicine, oily extracts of the plant were used to

soothe itching and toothache, while in Korea a decoction was used as protection against sunburn.

This prompted Indena to explore the natural soothing properties of the plant by extracting its oily

fraction with CO2 in supercritical conditions. A mixture of the oily fraction with oleyl alcohol,

named Zanthalene® 20% Solution, was prepared for cosmetic use.

In vivo tests showed immediate soothing action, and tolerability testing showed the product was

safe for use in skin care. It also preserved the protective function of the skin against external

aggression. Thus, a new cosmetic ingredient was born. Zanthalene® 20% Solution is particularly

indicated for after sun, after depilation, after peeling and shaving formulations. It is also generally

useful for formulations designed for sensitive skin.
