For example, the QS8 weighted88-key master synthesizer sells forless than most unweighted 76-keymodels, yet its piano-realistic actionrivals or surpasses anything avail-able. The QS8 provides true 64-voice polyphony and offers hun-dreds of sounds and multi-timbralmixes. warned, however, that some ofthe dance beats are so strong thatit could counteract the functionof a pace maker.

Aside from having a short leftthumb, life is good. But there aresome things I just don’t get. Ifany of you are thinking aboutlearning to play the guitar, andare looking forward to manyhappy years of fun and fulfill-ment on a tour bus or playing atyour local gin mill, first haveyour left thumb measured to seeif you meet the physical require-ments. This could save you a lotof time, trouble and heartachedown that long, lonesome road.Good luck! ♠

by Ray Bell, Instructor ofGuitar andMandolin, Boyd Music Academy

Years ago, myguitar teacher said that my leftthumb was not long enough forme to ever play anything reallyworthwhile on the guitar. Alas, Icouldn’t flop it over that topstring. So I decided to go intoclassical music.

Because of this one smallphysical handicap, I’ll never beable to play the really fun andinteresting places, such as theroad houses and places wherethey check you at the door to seeif you have a gun. (And if youdon’t, they give you one!) Thoseplaces have an atmosphere thatcannot be found anywhere else. The smell of yesterday’s smokeand stale beer hangs heavy in theair, but after being there for anhour or so you don’t notice it somuch, and besides there arediversions that will take yourmind off such minor flaws.

The light, or lack of it, is kindto one’s appearance and the gen-eral human condition, as every-body looks several years youngerthan they really are. This alsomakes it more difficult to see thescales on the “lounge lizards.”This quality is so strong, it canturn pork fat into lean beef. Isuppose seeing things in a “betterlight” is relative.

ROLAND INTRODUCES

THE V-DRUMS

by Garry Moore, Drum Consultant, Boyd Music

Acoustic ande l e c t r o n i cdrummers alikeshould take note of thelatest- and quite possiblythe best so far - entry in the elec-tronic drum set market: theROLAND V-PRO Drumset.

I have personally never been afan of electronic drums for the samereasons most other drummers arecool to them. For one thing, theyjust don’t feel like real drums.Playing surfaces, almost withoutexception, have been made of rub-ber covering a hard supporting sur-face. Unless one’s playing tech-niques are adjusted to this surface, there is a good possibility of handand wrist injury with extended play-ing times.

Along with this rather hard play-ing surface comes the problem ofpad sensitivity. If drums brain sen-sitivity is adjusted so that intricate“ghost notes” register, pad crosstalk(one pad firing another) becomes aproblem. And despite any sensitivi-ty adjustment, playing with brushesis simply an impossibility. Thenthere is the problem with the soundof electronic drums. Most peopleare very impressed with their initialexposure to electronic drum soundsbecause they are the same type oflarge ìin-your-faceî sounds that onehears on popular recordings. Thisinitial impression begins to wane, however, when the player realizes

that the sound produced by a givenpreset is the only sound produced bya preset, unlike a read drumset, which can produce hundreds ofsound variations depending on howhard it is played, what it is struckwith, or where the drumhead or rimis played.

Finally, there is the appearanceissue. Part of the appeal of a realdrumset is the visual impact it has onboth the player and the audience.Let’s face it: a ton of drums, cymbalsand hardware is nothing short of avisual feast for the eyes. Drums arelovely to look at. Electronic drumsare not.

Enter ROLAND with what manyagree is the first serious attempt toovercome all of the electronic drumshortcomings.

The “V” part of the V-Drummoniker stands for “virtual” - virtualdrums. In other words, Rolandísintent is that sitting behind a set ofV-Pro Drums will closely mimic theexperience of playing a “real” drumkit. Here’s how that is accom-plished:

First, Roland has developed a“pad” that is, in many respects, areal drum. It has a shell, a tunablehead (made by REMO), a rim, andtuning lugs. Because one is actuallyhitting a real drum, it feels like a realdrum. And it looks like a real, although short, drum. And the padsare mounted on a real drum rack.

Sounds? They’ve got ‘em. Andhow! The neat thing about the drum

sounds here is that the player createsthem individually, just like on an“ordinary” drumset, but with evenmore flexibility. The drum brainhere uses Roland’s CompositeObject Sound Modeling (COSM)technology, which allows the drum-mer (you) to construct not only adrumset, but the environment inwhich it is played!!

For example, you may choose adrum with wooden or metal shell, you may choose the shell size, choose the type of heads on thedrum, and even the type of mufflingon the drum. Once the drum is con-structed, the player can “tune” it tohis/her personal tastes. This processtakes place across the entire drum-set, from snare to toms to bass drumto cymbals.

Now the drummer can constructthe environment the drum exists in.Place the kit “virtually” in a garage,in a large hall, in a cathedral, evenoutside! Now choose what type ofmicrophones you want to use torecord the drums. Then place themicrophones wherever you like: tophead, bottom head, overhead, or allthe above. Next, one may choose

effects applied to the drums. Delays, choruses, reverbs...any digital effectcurrently available.

In short, you may construct theV-Pro Drum sound exactly as youwould create a regular drum set, butwith a difference. The V-Pro Drumsmay be configured as numerousdrumsets that can be “called up”with the touch of a button.

Add this to the onboardsequencer and metronome functions

V-drums TD-10 percussion sound module.
