OLYMPIC REPORT CARD FOR TEAM CANADA: ‘A’ FOR SOLID EFFORT AND 25 MEDALS IN SO-CHIctv.ca - S trong start, decent pace in the middle and a big four-medal final Friday helped Canada finish the 2014 Sochi Winter Games with 25 medals. With 10 gold, 10 silver and five bronze, Canada finished fourth in the overall standings and third in total gold. Host Russia led in total medals and gold with 33 and 13, respectively. The United States was second with 28 medals and Norway third with 26. Fun Fact: Canada finished second in
silver to Russia’s 11. Canada’s objective was to win more medals than any other country in So-chi. As host team, Canada finished third overall with 25, but topped the gold-medal count with 14 at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C. The Canadian Press predicted 30 medals for the Canadian team prior to its arrival. Topping the medal table in So-chi was going to be difficult without home-ice and home-snow advantage. Russia proved what a weighty advan-tage that can be.

Canada remains a world player in winter sport. It’s more fun and inter-esting to be that, than not.The good:-- Strong start had Canada atop the medal count on Day 4. The Canadi-ans stayed within striking distance of the overall lead throughout the Win-ter Games until Russia shut the door on the final weekend. Four events with two Canadian medallists on the podi-um. Double gold in curling and hock-ey.The bad:-- One medal short of matching, and two medals short of beating, the 26 won in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C. Canada got a big assist here from new sports and picked up five of the ex-tra 36 medals available in Sochi that weren’t on the menu in 2010. Canada lost ground in a few of the established sports.Canada’s grade: A

WALKING ON THE GRASS
The room was full of pregnant wom-en with their husbands.
The instructor said, “Ladies, remember that exercise is good for
you. Walking is especially beneficial. It strengthens the pelvic muscles and will make delivery that much easier.
Just pace yourself, make plenty of stops and try to stay on a soft surface
like grass or a path.” “Gentlemen, remember -- you’re
in this together. It wouldn’t hurt you to go walking with her. In fact, that
shared experience would be good for you both.”
The room suddenly became very quiet as the men absorbed this information.
After a few moments a man, name unknown, at the back of the room,
slowly raised his hand. “Yes?” said the Instructor.
“I was just wondering if it would be all right if she carries a golf bag while
we walk?”

In the face of mass demonstrations against his rule, Philip-pines President Ferdinand Marcos and his entourage are airlift-ed from the presidential palace in Manila by U.S. helicopters. Elected in 1966, Marcos declared martial law in 1972 in re-sponse to leftist violence. In the next year, he assumed dictatori-al powers. Backed by the United States, his regime was marked by misuse of foreign support, repression, and political murders. In 1986, Marcos defrauded the electorate in a presidential elec-tion, declaring himself the victor over Corazon Aquino, the wife of an assassinated rival. Aquino also declared herself the rightful winner, and the public rallied behind her. Deserted by his former supporters, Marcos and his wife, Imelda, fled to Ha-waii in exile, where they faced investigation on embezzlement charges. He died in 1989.
1945: CBC SHORTWAVE SERVICE BEGINS BROAD-CASTING TO THE WORLD In February 1945, the “Voice of Canada” spoke to the world for the first time. The CBC International Service was founded to broadcast to Canadian Forces overseas in the Second World War. At war’s end the radio service fo-cused on telling the world about Canada in over a dozen languages. Despite budget cuts and critics who accused it of employing communists or operating as a government mouthpiece, the service now called Radio Canada In-ternational has persevered. CBC Archives looks back on RCI’s six decades on shortwave. The Second World War is winding down in Europe, but Canada’s new international shortwave radio service is just getting started. From its studios in Montreal and a web of shortwave transmission towers in Sackville, N.B., the service targets both Canadian and foreign listeners. In this inaugural broadcast, Prime Minister Mackenzie King says the International Service of the CBC will extend Canadian ideals of equality and freedom to the world. King is joined by Justice Minister Louis St-Laurent, who addresses the audience in French, and by Howard B. Chase, chairman of the CBC board of governors. The three talk about the ser-vice’s goal of reflecting Canada beyond its borders. The International Service will broadcast to the United Kingdom and western Europe in three languages -- English, French and German -- with a signal that is strong and clear.

An elderly lady decided she wanted the inside of her home
painted so she looked in the newspaper and found an ad that
said “no indoor house painting to small or large, call such and such number.” so the woman gave the man a call and the next day he came to her house. The woman showed him the bedroom and said she wanted it painted light
blue, he measure the room, wrote down the color. Then he went
to the front door and yelled out “green side up”, then they went to the kitchen and she asked for a light yellow, the man wrote it
down, went to the front door and again yelled, “green side up” this
went on for two other rooms with the man always going to the door and yelling “green side up” after they were done getting every-
thing on paper, the woman asked the man how come after every room was finished he would go the front door and yell “green
side up” ? The man laughed and told her that he also does landscaping and that he had just hired three idiots
to lay sod across the street.

346 Centre Street 306-297-4144 ... Your Daily Fix ...
Two priests recently passed away and were on their way to heaven. When they got to the pearly gates, St.Peter said, “I’m sorry but our computer is down and you can’t come in for a week. So I am going to give
you both one “free” week back on earth to do anything you want to do and nothing will be held against you.” “You mean we can do what ever we want, and still get
into heaven?” “Yes,” said St. Peter. “Okay,” said the first priest, “I want to soar over
the mountains like an eagle.” “That’s easy enough,” said St. Peter. “Off you go!” The
second priest asked, “Are you sure that whatever I do will not hinder my chances
of getting into heaven?” “That’s right,” said St. Peter. “Okay,” said the second priest, “I want to go back as a stud.” “A stud?”
asked St. Peter. “Yes,” said the second priest. “Okay, I’ll see you in a week.” Finally, the
week ended and the computer was repaired. God asked to St. Peter, “Did you get the
two priests back so they can join us here?” “Well,” said St. Peter. “I got the first priest
back; he was soaring over the Rocky Moun-tains like an eagle. I’m having a bit of a
problem locating the second priest; he’s somewhere in Saskatchewan on a
snow tire.”
