10. Maintain your vehicle

Apply these tips to discover the joy of saving fuel and reduce your car’s CO2 emissions by up to 20 %.

9. Use electrical devices sparingly

7. Remove unnecessary weight

Clear out your car! Remove as much unnecessary weight as possible.

Removing 100 kg translates into saving 3 liters of fuel for every 1.000 km.

8. Remove your roof rack

Roof racks, rear racks and similar items should be re– moved as soon as you have finished using them. This reduces the drag while driving. Even at low speeds these devices add to higher consumption.

Only use electrical on-board equipment when necessary. Remember to turn such equipment off.

Use the air-conditioning system sparingly. Whenever possible park your car in the shade and cool the car naturally by letting in plenty of fresh air before you drive off again.

4. Use modern technology

5. Switch off the engine when stationary

Wherever possible, take your foot off the gas pedal when driving downhill (making use of the fuel cut-off). This saves fuel, in contrast to depressing the clutch.

Switch off the engine whenever you are stationary for a reason– able time (be sure you have the required lights on during the hours of darkness). With modern engines that are already warmed up, even a break of less than less ten seconds will save fuel.

Check your tyre pres- sure at least once every three weeks. Set the pressure to about 0.2 bar above that given in the manual for the vehicle when unladen. When carrying a load, use correspondingly higher pressures (see instruction manual). Low-resistance tyres also help to save fuel.

6. Increase your tyre pressure slightly

2. Drive at low engine speeds

1. Drive off immediately after starting

Start the engine without pressing the gas pedal. Drive off immediately, because the engine does not have to warm up – this would waste fuel.

When you are out in your car you can still help to protect the environment, without restricting your independence or mobility!

The tips in this brochure are very simple to use and they contribute to a significant reduction in fuel consumption, up to a 20 % saving.

¡This is good for the environment, because lower fuel consumption means lower CO2 emissions.

¡When you drive economically you also save oil which is rapidly becoming scarce.

¡“Economical driving” also means that you save money! Especially in times of high fuel prices, following these tips will pay off immediately. For the same money, you can drive further on a tank of fuel and will not have to fill up so frequently.

You can quickly turn our fuel-saving tips into driving habits and then benefit permanently from reduced fuel consumption.

Bon voyage!

Use an anticipatory driving style, and exploit momentum. Go with the flow, and keep sufficient distance between yourself and the vehicle in front to avoid unnecessary braking.

3. Adopt an anticipatory driving style

When you drive off, change into second gear after only a car’s length, and if you have a gasoline or petrol engine change up another gear after about 2000 rpm (max. 2500). If you have a diesel engine you can and should change up at even lower engine speeds. If your car does not have a rev counter, change into third gear when you reach 30 km/h, and into each successive gear after increasing your speed by another 10 km/h.

When accelerating, press the gas pedal two thirds of the maximum, as this saves fuel.
