Situated on nearly 8 acres along Mentor Ave., James A. Garfield National Historic Site honors the 20th President of the United States and Mentor resident James A. Garfield at this National Park found in the heart of our community.
James A. Garfield lived in this home, the centerpiece of his sprawling farm, from 1876-1881. After his assassination, his family continued to reside here, and the home was occupied until 1934. The President’s widow, Lucretia, added the nation’s first presidential library to the house in 1885-86.
National Park Service Rangers and Volunteers provide guided tours of the Garfield House, which has been restored to its appearance of the era of 1886-1910.
The Garfield Home boasts a collection of artifacts that are over 80% original to the Garfield Family.
An on-site Visitor Center is home to various displays highlighting key aspects in the life and times of James A. Garfield and the Garfield Family. Visitors can also view a biographical film about James A. Garfield in the theater located inside Visitor Center. There is no charge to view the exhibits or the film in the Visitor Center, but there is a charge to take a guided tour of the Garfield House.
National Park visitors will find James A. Garfield National Historic Site’s official National Parks Passport stamp in the Visitor Center, and a bookstore inside the Visitor Center has a variety of books and other items related to James A. Garfield.

Mentor Marsh occupies the ancient river bed of the Grand River. In the past, the river flowed into Lake Erie at the site of the present Mentor Lagoons. Today, the Grand River flows into Lake Erie between the communities of Grand River and Fairport Harbor.
A series of trails and overlooks within diverse habitats are open to the public free of charge from dawn to dusk. Visitors should remember that wetland areas at this nature preserve may at times be muddy. Please dress accordingly.
While in this area of the Mentor Headlands, please visit the Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve along Lake Erie at the eastern border of Headlands State Park (northern terminus of SR 44).
A large variety of wildlife can be observed within the Mentor Marsh and Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserves. Birding is especially good during the spring and fall migrations. It is not unusual for expert birders to hear or see in excess of 125 species of birds in a single morning during the spring migration.
Botanizing the forest, marsh, and dunes habitats will yield hundreds of species of plants for the keen observer. The spring wildflowers are abundant in the School Woods near the Newhouse Overlook. In good years, migrations of monarch butterflies can be fantastic on the dunes at Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve and in the meadows along the Kerven Trail.

The Mentor Lagoons Marina provides the perfect place to launch your boat. With direct access to Lake Erie, the Marina lies just west of Fairport Harbor and just a short distance from Cleveland.
The marina can accommodate boats up to 50 feet in length. Amenities include off-season or year-round indoor and outdoor storage, 35-ton lift service, and limited water and electric.
The boat ramp at the Mentor Lagoons Marina is open April 1 – November 15, weather permitting. The ramp opens one hour before sunrise and closes one hour after sunset. Daily launch permits may be purchased at the Marina Office during business hours and are non-transferable and non-refundable.
The Mentor Parks & Recreation Department offers dozens of kayaking, canoing, sailing and leisure paddling opportunities from mid-May through the end of August. Call for availability.
The adjacent Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve features hundreds of acres of beautiful green space, with over 3 miles of nature trails.
The nature preserve also includes one and one half miles of shoreline with rare dune plants, a riverine marsh, mature oak bluff and crescent-shaped open waterways. The preserve serves as an important breeding and nursery area for fish and waterfowl and provides a resting place for neo-tropical birds and butterflies as they migrate each year.
Electric carts are available for physically challenged persons to enjoy the trails.

GET READY TO ROCK! The Mentor Rocks summer concert series is a weekly celebration of great music, food and family fun!
Concerts are held every Tuesday at 7 PM starting June 12th at Mentor’s new state-of-the-art Amphitheater.
The Amp features a huge 3,000 square foot stage, 30,000 watt sound system, advanced LED lighting and two 14-by-7-foot video screens giving everyone a front row seat to the show.
The facility was unveiled on July 4, 2017 with a special performance by 90s alt-rockers, SOUL ASYLUM. Since then, over 60,000 people have visited the venue for rock concerts, theater, opera & more!
Mentor Rocks features some of the best bands in the region playing your rock, pop, and country favorites. The concert series has proven so popular that the City has expanded the 2018 season to eleven weeks!
Bring a picnic or come hungry and enjoy dinner from one of nearly a dozen food trucks scheduled to set up shop each week.

Civic Center Park is one of Mentor’s largest parks and is home to the state-of-the-art Mentor Civic Amphitheater which hosts live performances throughout the season.
The park features our largest aquatics facility, Civic Center Waterpark , which includes an olympic-size outdoor swimming pool with water slide, children’s water play area, sand volleyball, and more.
The Mentor Ice Arena is also located within the park and features two indoor regulation-size ice rinks and a studio rink. The facility hosts a number of local and regional hockey & figure skating tournaments and can handle a capacity of up to 2,000 spectators. Year-round open skates.
The Community Center is located above the arena.
Civic Center Park also includes picnic grounds and shelter, large playground area, baseball/softball fields, a lighted
tennis court, lighted pickleball courts, skatepark, basketball courts and paved bike path.

TRY PICKLEBALL! Pickleball resembles a combination of tennis, badminton and ping-pong and is one of the fastest growing sports in the country.

Wildwood Cultural Center & Park is Mentor’s finest cultural gem. The estate and manor house were built by the John G. Oliver family in 1908.
