What can you see?

Dear Friends As I write this it is the day after the Chrism Service at Sheffield Cathedral and I am still reflecting on the challenging words of Bishop Steven’s sermon. We had gathered together to renew our commitment to ministry as lay ministers, as evangelists, as deacons, priest and Bishops and as the whole people of God. And Bishop Steven suggested that our prayer as we come should be the prayer of blind Bartimaeus: Lord let me see again. So what had prompted Steven to choose this? The day before he had been at St Peters Tankersley dedicating new building works. They now have a new state of the art eco- heating system, a new kitchen and space for children, a new organ, more flexible seating in the north aisle and a church extension to make room for a new toilet. What inspired the Bishop however, was the vision which shaped it. Eight years previous a member of the church in his eighties wrote to the Rector, Keith Hale: ‘the lead theft and the unfortunate resulting water damage to the organ may be a blessing in disguise which opens the door to a better use of considerable space which the present pipe organ occupies. May I put the following ideas for your consideration? Instead of repairing the organ, clear out the organ loft and install a new electronic organ. The created area would provide a versatile much needed space for our growing Sunday school... I feel it’s time for an objective, unemotional and realistic forward planning in order to assure a continuous growth of our congregation and its influence in the parish of Tankersley.’

As we move into the days after Easter and Jesus‘ resurrection we remember how Jesus opened the eyes of those who were blinded with grief at his death. Those whose hope and vision was blurred with tears and fear- suddenly opened on the road to Emmaus. We as the church community at St Mary’s are called to be people of vision. Is our sight blurred? What are we going to do to nurture a new vision for God’s world in our community, a fresh vision for God’s church that looks forward into the future instead of holding onto the past?A vision that is greater and deeper than a group of people growing old together. We are called to be a church filled with God’s new life, constantly seeking ways to model our lives on the character of Jesus. Reflecting that new life that bursts forth at this time of year. In the words of the hymn sung at every ordination service: ‘Enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight’. With every blessing Alison

Open Gardens 2016

Our last open Gardens day in 2014 was a great success. Visitors came from all

over the UK to look at the gardens, the weather was glorious and the

refreshments sold out.

We are hoping to repeat its success this year. The proposed date is either

Saturday 16th July or Saturday 30th July. If you are a keen gardener and would

like to open your garden to visitors then please contact Diane Lawrance on

07773905575 or by email at [email protected]

Mothers’ Union March

We all enjoyed our “Soup and Sandwich” lunch and the Quiet Time that followed. We were able to send £100.00p to the central “Make a Mothers’ Day” appeal. Our gift will improve the lives of other members in this country and abroad. During April we have a coffee morning to raise funds for our branch and a fun afternoon for families for £5.00p per family. Anyone and everyone is invited to join us for these. All children must be accompanied hence “family.” Our April meeting sees Ruth Mangham coming to speak about our overseas branches linked to our diocese. When you receive this magazine we will be celebrating, or will have celebrated Easter. Well done to all of you who can now have chocolate, a glass of wine or a dessert. A thought for the month.

“Motivation is the key to service.” Anne Balme

Thank you We would like to thank everyone who so kindly sent their good wishes and cards for Raymond's recent stay in hospital after a stroke. It also was a great help to have so many good friends who gave me lifts to the hospital over the few weeks that Raymond was in? Raymond is now on the mend and beginning to get out and about. Thank you your kindness is greatly appreciated from Betty and Raymond Kaye

WIVES GROUP The Pie and Pea supper was enjoyed by everyone and the Beetle Drive was a lot of fun. The Beetle Drive champion was Sylvia and the booby prize went to Adrienne. Raffle winners were Angela and Sylvia. At the meeting on March 7th we heard about ‘Lady Arbella Stuart – The Queen that never was’ a talk by speaker David Templeman. Our first meeting on April 4th will be ‘in house’ when we share 5 books we have enjoyed reading over the years: Fact or fiction, thought provoking, funny, sad or thrilling – whatever they may be. It would be lovely to hear extracts or just say why they are favourites or simply tell us the titles. The second meeting is on April 18th when we will be able to listen to poems and monologues in dialect by Christine Goodwin and her husband. We are to visit ‘Beamish - the Living Museum of the North’ on Tuesday 21st June so if anyone is interested please get in touch as we are now taking names. As always the coach fare is dependent upon numbers, but the Group Admission to Beamish (15+ visitors) is: £12 for Adults £10.50 for Senior/Student £6 for Children Free for Children under 5 years. I have pinned a list to one of the notice boards in the schoolroom if anyone would like to join us, please just add your name to that. Pam

Over February half term we visited London, to see family and friends. We chose a hotel near Bayswater Tube station and Hyde Park. I have never given anything up for Lent. I am not figure of virtue but I don’t smoke, drink only the odd beer a week and rarely eat chocolate so the common ones are not really relevant to me. So instead this year I decided to give up some of my time. I made the decision to ride my bike either on the road or on my static trainer for at least every 30 minutes every day. This is all part of my fitness and weight loss regime, another attempt to be healthier. After my accident and enforced inactivity I had gained weight again and was feeling decidedly “off-it” when on my bike so I decided a radical solution was required. Hence the 40 days of cycling.

And there is the rub; when discussing this with one of the members of my cycling club he had no idea what Lent was about. He didn’t know how long it was nor the idea that people often give up something and so I suspect he wasn’t aware of its Biblical origins. Just about on the same day I was watching Mary Berry’s Easter treats program and becoming grumpy over the constant explanations she was giving for Easter traditions, most that were very simplified and sometimes straightforwardly wrong. Both of these got me thinking if as Christians we want more people to understand us and come to know Christ, are we making huge assumptions of the general public? The researchers for Mary Berry clearly thought that the viewers would need to have a wide range of Easter traditions explained to them. Things that at first glance we might have hoped they already knew. But then how much do we know about Easter? How long have we thought about what we are doing and why? So apologies if you know this already but here comes the condensed Easter revision notes. There won’t be a test later but there will be a competition.

Easter comes from the Old English word Eostre. Eostre is derived from the name of a goddess of the 8th -9th century whose month roughly equates to April and so the celebration of Jesus’ death tended to happen in Eostre’s month. Just as Christmas borrows many traditions from pre-Christian festivals celebrating the return of the sun and

Editorial; This month I have been thinking about Easter

lengthening daylight, so Easter borrows many traditions from pre-Christian spring and fertility festivals. At this stage I think it is worth remembering that up until relatively recently (around a 100 years) people in rural England still died each winter from hunger. Where people were reliant for food on what they could grow or rear, the return of spring and the new life in the fields and hedgerows was clearly very important to celebrate. A poor harvest, the premature death of an animal could lead to lean times during the cold winter months. Young buds on trees, flowering bulbs peeking through the barren undergrowth were all indicators of new life and the prospect of food to come.

Eggs as a symbol of re-birth predate Christian culture by many centuries. The emergence of a perfectly formed chick from what can appear as a lifeless stone is a powerful image to symbolise new life or re-birth. Painting them and colouring them, at first red to signify the blood of Christ shed on Good Friday and then other colours, has been a long standing Christian tradition. It also ties in with Shrove Tuesday when eggs were eaten up as they were forbidden during Lent and so Easter Sunday was the first day when they were permissible again. Easter bunnies or more accurately hares have long been linked to Easter and eggs. This was possibly due to the mistaken understanding that they hatched from eggs (most likely to be from ground nesting birds like plovers or lapwings) that are found in the fields where hares are commonly found.

Many non-English speaking traditions refer to Easter as Paschal tide, from its links to Passover (Pesach in Hebrew.) Here there are direct correlations with the Jewish traditions of sacrificial Passover lambs and the idea of Christ’s sacrifice to us all. Sheep, shepherds and lambs were a theme Christ himself referred to repeatedly. Again lambs tend to be born around this time and so are another obvious symbol of new life and also renewal and the promise of good things to come. The Christian season of Eastertide runs for the five weeks up until Pentecost, and to close the second Sunday of Easter has a wonderful name…its Quasimodo Sunday…who knew???

Competition

Whilst doing the thinking for my editorial this month Barbara and I were discussing the meaning of the many phrases we either say each Sunday or more particularly at Easter. We were thinking about how we would explain these to people who were not regular church goers. So below are phrases and ideas we use regularly in Christian Worship; prizes will be awarded to anyone who can send in any explanations or answers no matter how short. The best ones will be published in future months so come on, we all say them, how would you explain them???? Send your answers to me on a postcard or stuck down envelope to 28 Lynham Ave, Birdwell, Barnsley, S70 5SY, leave them clearly labelled at the back of St Mary’s Church or email [email protected] So an easy one to start with…

Why is the second Sunday of Eastertide called Quasimodo Sunday?

Explain any or all of these:

“Thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of Christ.” (really? we do

what?)

“We look for the resurrection of the dead” (what does this mean, where do

we look for it?)

“We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church” (What in the CofE?)

“Our Father who art in heaven….(where, what exactly?)”

“Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again” How do we explain

what we mean by this last phrase?

Archbishop John Sentamu when he came to Elsecar some years ago now, and several times recently when interviewed on TV, has spoken about how we should ALL be talking about our faith with all the people we meet in our daily lives. I am not sure how I would go about starting to explain the above. It makes you think, …….I hope? Alastair Gittner

At our meeting in March we thought about how our actions can speak louder than words. We looked closely at the story of Jesus visiting the home of Mary and Martha. We saw that there are two examples of teaching here. There is Mary showing her love for Jesus through her actions – she uses a bottle of perfume to clean Jesus’ feet and then dries his feet with her hair. Judas on the other hand teaches through words – criticising Mary saying that the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. But he wouldn’t have done that with the money, he would have kept it for himself. Mary’s actions speak louder than Judas’s words. No one can doubt her love for Jesus; she is showing it for us all to see. We talked about how we should all set an example in our actions so that people can follow what we do, so we are like a sermon in shoes. Our actions like Mary’s should demonstrate our love for Jesus for others to see and learn from. The children made a door hanger this morning from decorated shoes which will remind them that they are sermons in shoes and to think about how their actions can show their love for Jesus Our next meeting is on 10th April at 10.45am – all children aged 4 or over are welcome to come and join in the fun.
